I've been surprised by how many people under 40 can't read an analog clock...you know, the kind with the big hand and the little hand.

Subby must not see many Mexicans.
I don't know who started it, but Mexican gangs can't get enough of Roman numerals and that font style in general.

That's about right. Being a Mexican girl, in a few years she'll look about 40 so the numbers will line up.

That's a quality article that doesn't even bother to explain the significance of the number.

Is it the number of trombones Justin Bieber can fit in his anus?
Has she seen Roger Goodell's script and is letting us know Super Bowl 76 will be won by the Los Angeles Jaguars?
Is that how many acorns she can fit in her cheeks?
Is she secretly a teabagger and is honoring the year Jesus and George Washington gave King George an Atomic Declaration Drop and rang the bells to warn the French?
Does she own a biatchin' Chevy Vega from that year?

Inquiring minds...eh, I'm kinda over it.

My 8 year old can read one.

I actually find the analog clock face a better representation of time than a digital readout. I can glance at my watch (an analog model, naturally) and I'm presented with what is essentially a graphical readout of time, and I can instantly see that if it's 9:40, and I need to be somewhere at 10:00, I've got about a third of an hour left. With a digital readout, it's not quite as visually obvious.

Depends on what you're used to. Analog clocks take me a lot longer to read. I hate analog watches.

My kids can read the clock but terms like quarter of or half past have to be translated into digital.

What time is it?

I never heard the term "quarter of" until I moved to Pennsyltucky. At first, I thought quarter of 7:00 meant 7:15. Now I know better.

I didn't know it wasn't taught anymore. It's not terribly vital I suppose. Even movie sequel titles usually use the arabic numeral or none at all.

Not to mention they don't even own a watch, can't use a compass , read a topo map, suck at calculating distances, do simple math problems without a calculator etc.

I'm surprised how many young people don't own a watch but have a phone for that but ask me what time it is anyway because they don't want to dig the phone out of their pocket...because I wear a watch. (deep breath)

Your right about it not being vital. I still remember when one kid asked a teacher why we needed to know them, her answer was "Because some things still written in Roman Numerals, like the dates movies were made. And you want to be able to read that don't you?"

I'm 30, and aside from not having a watch, I learned all the rest at age 24 on a land surveying crew. People tend not to learn things that won't help in day to day life.

Yeah, I can say with about 99.9% certainty that I will never need to use a compass in my life. There's enough analog clocks around though that it's worth knowing. I remember that being taught early at my grade schools so it surprised me too when I met other teenagers who didn't know how.
