Some dude sprays a little water, and the cop sucker punches the first woman he sees. I wonder how many women have had their cheekbones or noses broken by this guy over the years? I'd be willing to bet dozens. Cops are the number one domestic violence offenders in the country. They're allowed to get away with it, because they're "heroes". The entirety of Police Culture protects these people.

This guy beat his wife, brutally for years. She'd been hospitalized several times with broken bones, and when she tried to report it, other officers would pay her a visit, and made it quite clear to her that any attempt by her to pursue charges would result in her disappearance or charges filed against her. The day before this incident, the cops tried to force her into an unmarked car at gunpoint because she'd testified about her abuse in a deposition only a few hours earlier.

This cop was still being called a hero at his funeral, and several thousand Police officers attended, while his wife was being excoriated in the press. Because of this incident, a law was passed that required the mandatory suspension and loss of all weapons for any law enforcement official accused of domestic violence. The law also required the loss of the Law Enforcement license for any Officer convicted of domestic violence. The Police Union fought this law tooth and nail and are still trying to get it changed back. They actually believe that is is their absolute right to brutalize their wives and children. They have said so, in so many words.

Isn't it a shame that this is even a debate? WHen I was a kid, a part of our Social Studies education about America was the fact that our public officials, including the police, were supposed to be held accountable by the public. Something like being able to film or tape police made sense, even in the 70's and 80's before the tech really existed.

1. She did have what appeared to be SOMETHING in her hand. The only people who can look at that video and call it anything specific besides a cylindrical object are those completely unbelieveable jack-nuts on TV shows and movies who take 7-11 footage and "enhance" it to count how many whiskers someone 400 yards from the camera has. The rest of us see a pixellated "something".

2. FTFA: At the same time, a young woman is walking past - who also gets hit by the liquid.
As she turns around to see where it came from, a police officer in a white shirt - which means he has acquired the rank of sergeant - comes towards the woman and delivers a brutal punch to her face, knocking her to the ground.

3. Even if she WAS carrying a can of silly string, and even if she HAD sprayed it at people, that in no way whatsoever justifies battery by ANYONE. We have laws and a justice system for a reason, and ironically, the police are supposed to be the mature ones that only use forces when it is absolutely necessary.

When I see that actually happen - when, in the middle of a parade, a sergeant assaults an innocent person without cause or justification and is immediately taken down and cuffed by other officers as a result - then I'll start believing in the system once again. Twenty-two cop cars showed up, for reasons we were never able to figure out, since no arrests were actually made, except the one guy who resisted after being tased. He was tased for not having ID. Another guy was also tased for not immediately showing ID, although he didn't resist. Another friend was detained, but not arrested, for five hours as a witness. ("am I under arrest?" -- "no" -- "can I go then?" -- "no" -- "I'd like to call my lawyer then" -- "you don't need a lawyer, you're not being charged" -- "then I'd ilke to go" -- "no").

I was told I'd be arrested for continuing to drink a beer in my own room (I'm 30), because re house was a crime scene ("what's the crime?" -- "we'll see")

Meanwhile, the owner of the house was on acid, screaming "what the fark is going on here" at the cops at the top of his lungs and was never touched.

Again, no underagers, no drugs were found.

A better gang strategy than wait til they're 18 and then move them from a street gang to a prison gang so the job requires less of a focus purely on dealing with the violent. (i advocate physical isolation of prisoners for all violent felons - the influence of prison gangs on street gangs dramatically increases their violence). Also end prohibition and improve the education of the populace.

I'm not a cop, but I can say this: If some dumbass shoots silly string in my face, there's a good chance I'm going to punch them. Whether or not I win the ensuing fight remains to be seen, but my first reaction would probably be of a physical nature.

With that said, cops are professionals (or supposed to be) and as such, should be taught restraint. Those with violent tendencies (like me) should be weeded out in the interview process.

That's only partly true. In some parts of the country the police have the right to privacy in public places. In some places it's against the law to video record police doing their jobs. Maryland was one of those places until a court overturned it. Maryland would charge people videoing police with wiretapping. Which is a ten year prison sentence.

There's a reason courts keep overturning those public "wiretapping" laws is because those laws themselves are illegal. Thats because THERE IS NO EXPECTATION OF PRIVACY IN PUBLIC!

I have two close friends -- guys I've known for 10+ years -- who have become cops since I met them. I'd still lay down in traffic for either one of them, but I'd be lying if I said I was 100 percent confident that they've never stepped just a tiny bit outside of their authority. We used to talk about law and cop stuff all the time, but those discussions get pretty tense these days.

That said, neither of them would ever just step up and throw a right hook at a woman. What is WRONG with this guy?

She was jumping around behind them, yelling and throwing some kind of liquid on them. Then when they turned around she started to run. Granted she didn't get far but she was making the attempt.

Most people are smart enough to know that is just asking for trouble.

But now the public will cry racism or something like that and cause the police to apologize for doing their jobs.

You are quite right. If this had been a case of legitimate brutality the victims body would shut itself down in such a way to make it imperious to pain or injury.

I play in a beer league that has a couple of cop-centric teams in it; they are, by far, the most violent players in a no-check league that you could imagine. It's no fun to play them.

Every little bump or 50/50 puck seems to result in confrontation.

They keep trying... A few years ago, some city tried to cite a guy because he had security cameras outside his house, and the one in front of his door caught the cops being douche-nozzles. The city tried to claim it was a violation of the right to not be recorded without consent, ignoring the fact that the cameras either shot on the guy's public property, or of an area visible to the public, which are both legal areas to record in. The city eventually lost.

This doesn't mean that the cops don't keep trying, though. I've recently seen footage of them trying to stop someone on the street by merely saying that it was illegal to record police officers.

I watched the clip several times and it didn't seem to me that she threw anything..what I saw flying towards the officers seemed to come from some guy in the bottom left of the screen. I really hope that cop gets into some serious trouble for this.

nah, pretty easy actually. during the mandatory search at the police station, a quantity of drugs was found in this persons possessions. enough to lock them up for a couple/few years. however, the cops talked to the DA's office - if the victim signs off on the lawsuit AND agrees to a gag order, then no drug charges will be filed. everyone walks away clean!
