Boojum2k: lecavalier: Calmamity: This kind of shiat is going to happen more and more often and people are starting to fight back.

It's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Nobody is ever going to fight back. Ever. If that were a five-year-old girl and that cop killed her, there would be - at best - a nasty letter to the editor written by us. We are pitiful and, because of it, allowed these adrenaline junkies to get where they are.

Sadly, you are probably right. Things will have to get a lot worse before it might get better.

Just being honest.

I really don't know why his hands were around her face but it doesn't look like she was punched. It looks like he tried to grab her and she just went limp and fell. It doesn't look right to me. However... This does look like the same cop who threw me across the street a few weekends ago.

You don't get jailed for a simple assault these days. Fine, court costs, etc.

Though he should get cock-punched for hitting a girl that wasn't threatening him.

Good on him. If this incident went unchecked, do you know how many silly-string copycats would pop up in this country??

Think of it this way: If this is how cops react to being sprayed with silly string, how do you think they would react to something stronger?

Just listening on the local philly conservative talk radio station to the morning guy defend the officer without even having seen the video. Guy is suggesting that somehow the woman must have done *something* to deserve it. He also is douchily saying that it's suspicious that the camera "just happened" to be pointing right at the incident because, "nobody ever just points a camera at a crowd unless they know something is about to happen." Says he won't watch the video because he hates it when they say "shocking video."

Mikey1969: 4tehsnowflakes: and the word is slowly filtering down through the ranks that recording in this situation does not justify confiscating the device or arresting the person

Isn't it a shame that this is even a debate? WHen I was a kid, a part of our Social Studies education about America was the fact that our public officials, including the police, were supposed to be held accountable by the public. Something like being able to film or tape police made sense, even in the 70's and 80's before the tech really existed.

Of course, the saddest part is the fact that this cop helps ruin it for the legitimate cops out there, and despite what farkers claim, there are plenty of good cops out there, people who became cops for the RIGHT reasons, shiat like this just makes more and more people become convinced that every single cop is dirty.

What mystifies me most is how we protect people who do that, but if someone tries to have a little integrity and expose exactly the kind of people and behaviour that would squeeze whatever trust for us the public has left, it's that guy who ends up with radio trouble as soon as he needs help with not getting shot. Without your integrity you're nothing.... or at least, only as good as the people who try your cases and oversee your department. If they're crooked then I guess you can do whatever you want.

I am not sure why people are getting upset over this. We have all seen the Youtube videos and know what can happen when silly string hits an open flame. That woman was spraying highly flammable compounds over the crowd and at police officers. This officer risked recieving massive burns to prevent what may have been an act of domestic terrorism.

The man is a hero. He should be promoted and publically honored as such.

This isn't anything new. For generations they've got away with it by just claiming "badguys" resist. Now that cameras are just about everywhere, we find that the real criminals are the blue shirts. The only good one.......

I've seen cops go to jail with less evidence than that, so I think this guy will be made an example of.

A) Dickhead cop should go to jail

B) Now that it is possible, cops should be required to wear small audio/video recording cameras at all times while on duty. It has become clear in the age of cell phone cameras that cops do this shiat ALOT and lie about it ALL THE TIME.

Maybe we'll see some change in police culture when someone rich & politically connected gets accidently beaten up ( or killed ) by one of them, but I'm not holding my breath...

/ as I said earlier, the best policy is to stay far away

I'm not a cop, but I can say this: If some dumbass shoots silly string in my face, there's a good chance I'm going to punch them. Whether or not I win the ensuing fight remains to be seen, but my first reaction would probably be of a physical nature.

With that said, cops are professionals (or supposed to be) and as such, should be taught restraint. Those with violent tendencies (like me) should be weeded out in the interview process.

I wasn't attempting to make a villain out of him at all, and I think we're working crosswise here. I am obsessed with accuracy to a point which many find annoying. My objection wasn't to C12 at all in this case, but solely with your premise that he does not like police officers more than the rest of us do, which I believe to be a false premise. I am not attempting to make a value judgement on C12 for his esteem of LEOs, merely to point out that the average Farker's esteem for police officers is very low, likely much lower than C12's esteem for them.

Perhaps I see our issue. I commented that C12 doesn't seem to like "power mad pricks" any more than most Farkers, and it appears that you are equating all police officers with power mad pricks. I don't personally see them all that way either. On the other hand, I think that he holds CLEOs in general in vastly higher regard than the average Farker.

Fark is a place of firmly embedded opinions and you rarely see any give and take. I was just acknowledging that C12 deserved a little credit for being very reasonable on this one.

the_chief: What is the solution to the cop problem?

More training (money).
More oversight (sadly, also costs money).
Better employees from the get go (I challenge those who believe all cops are unethical and power hungry to go be cops and people take it like an insult. We will sit around and say the job is paid plenty, maybe too much, but we won't sink to doing it ourselves, nor will we pay enough to attract people who are intelligent and driven for success but wouldn't want the position)

A better gang strategy than wait til they're 18 and then move them from a street gang to a prison gang so the job requires less of a focus purely on dealing with the violent. (i advocate physical isolation of prisoners for all violent felons - the influence of prison gangs on street gangs dramatically increases their violence). Also end prohibition and improve the education of the populace.

I really hate a-hole cops, especially as someone who has been a part of punk rock music scenes and probably been ticketed by a cop because i was dressed as a punk and not a businessman, but I'm also a long-time hockey fan. I know a dive when I see one.

Am I the only one who noticed that the cop never actually took a swing, but rather contacted her face with his forearm as he was trying (forcefully) to grab the silly string from her hand?

For what? She didn't do anything except to come into the cops line of sight. That guy is a psycho, and should be permanently removed from any aspect of law enforcement. He can go flip burgers or sweep floors in a mink farm. After he does a couple years real time for assault.

It's much better than than the original and you can clearly see that the woman didn't do anything, but was looking (and probably laughing) about the other guy who did spray something. And the cop also clearly punches her.

*snicker* that's probably why there's 10 cops right there. They all know this cop is a bad one, and they need to keep an eye on him. Did you notice that right after the incident, they're all completely occupied with blocking the view of everyone who saw him punch the girl?

Big Man On Campus: Breathe Laugh Twitch: You know Apple just filed a patent for an iPhone feature that allows the phone's camera to be remotely disabled by some kind of signal.

Officially, the signal would be broadcast only in places vulnerable to espionage, and maybe movie theatres.

In reality, the signal will be used by corrupt law enforcement.

Everyone knows this will be the outcome, but Apple's engineers and managers and marketing people proceeded to implement it anyway. Should get a good raise and bonus out of it, maybe a promotion. Nobody ever accused humanity of overthinking the long term consequences.

So, if Google put the same feature in, and used it per law enforcements request... Apple could sue them?

Apple can sue you for making gloves that control the weather. They make patents for everything thats not developed yet.

I'm dismayed at the number of time people on teh internets refer to punches like this as a "sucker punch".

A sucker punch is one that comes when you're not looking or you are intentionally distracted to deliver a blow. That wasn't a sucker punch, she saw him coming at her.

Now, on that note, he should lose his job. There are 10 cops standing around and he's freaking HUGE and apparently, an a$$ole.

If they know he's a bad cop and they do nothing about it, they are equally culpable and therefore also bad cops. Cops who protect bad cops make the job harder for the ones who are actually good cops by destroying the public's trust in them.
