I just feel so bad for this guy. So bad. He's clearly not evil or malevolent, he's just had his brain break down so totally that he can't control his behavior. I can't imagine how much pain he's in at the moment - he's either still so delusional that he's hurting too bad to act rationally, or he's finished with his psychotic break and therefore sane enough to know that he's just farked his career and the way that his colleagues will always see him.

dready zim: Tatterdemalian: everything can be modeled mathematically, if you know the right formula

this is not true if you use actual computers instead of some sort of computer run by unicorns or fairies

Yes it`s from WIKI but it`s easy to copypasta from there so,

"Chaos theory is a field of study in mathematics, with applications in several disciplines including physics, engineering, economics, biology, and philosophy. Chaos theory studies the behavior of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions, an effect which is popularly referred to as the butterfly effect. Small differences in initial conditions (such as those due to rounding errors in numerical computation) yield widely diverging outcomes for chaotic systems, rendering long-term prediction impossible in general.[1] This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future behavior is fully determined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved.[2] In other words, the deterministic nature of these systems does not make them predictable.[3][4] This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos.

Chaotic behavior can be observed in many natural systems, such as weather"

And if you don't use computers, or understand and control for digital imprecision... what then?

/Einstein never used a computer
//and if mathematics couldn't control for chaos to a predictable degree, we would not have seen a single successful moon landing

The most important thing to remember is that, if the mathematical formula don't match empirical reality, then it is the formula that is wrong, not reality.

/also, knowing what is wrong is an essential step in eventually determining what is correct
//everything can be modeled mathematically, if you know the right formula... even climate
///which is how you can tell AGW is fake... the accurate models don't produce the "hockey stick" graphs needed to justify forced social changes

poorjon: Something something drink and derive.

/Had a calc prof who stared at the projector screen for a minute or two when the Mac plasma ball screen saver came on before finally saying "oh, you see it too. so it isn't just an acid flashback"

My friend had a calc grad student instructor who would frequently start writing in Cryllic letters on the chalkboard. They were all so damn terrified of him no one brought it up, and he never noticed (or if he did, never cared enough to apologize or correct it).

Made me feel better about *my* calc grad student instructor at the time, who wore the same t-shirt and fairly certain had his hair in the same ponytail all semester.

Math is fun.

/of course, the one awesome, ridiculously normal professor I had was an assistant professor who left after it was apparent he wouldn't get tenure
//but of course
///he had students coming to his office hours 3 or 4 semesters after they first took a class with him, cause he'd still help

DrgnMech: I had the unfortunate pleasure of seeing this guy in action. Dude rounded the corner as I was going down the engineering hall toward class. He was talking to himself and clearly out of his mind. Biggest "WTF" moment I've had in loooong time.

Also, I'm out of eye bleach. Any donations? =(

He then came back into the classroom and took off his clothes, except for his socks.

Clearly he was just trying to get down to business.

If it's the guy that the reddit threads say it is, he's tenured. So he'll be fine, and whatever glimpse of old man ass those kids might have been subjected to was still probably less painful than a typical Calc 1 lecture.

Huh. I told my students the first day of class that I'd be holding classes in the nude, and if they didn't like it they could leave. It wasn't the result of a mental breakdown.

/no, I didn't actually do that
//would've been awesome though
///maybe if I had tenure...
