So do news agencies, and I realize that term does not really apply to Gawker, pay people to sit around and read reddit all day? Because I can do that for half of whatever the current guy makes and still keep my regular job.

gonegirl: I just feel so bad for this guy. So bad. He's clearly not evil or malevolent, he's just had his brain break down so totally that he can't control his behavior. I can't imagine how much pain he's in at the moment - he's either still so delusional that he's hurting too bad to act rationally, or he's finished with his psychotic break and therefore sane enough to know that he's just farked his career and the way that his colleagues will always see him.

Couldn't have said it better. The poor man. I know this is Fark, but... yeah, there's nothing funny about this. Article needs the sad tag.

"Tenured" doesn't mean you can strip in class and start screaming obscenities at your students.

Obligatory Good Will Hunting / Unabomber quote goes here.

Best of luck to you, though - and honestly, if you're not registered as a Student with a Disability - look into it. Took me until my last year to break down and do it, and at first the stigma I mainly imagined in my own head really sucked... but it helped immensely with things like 'rescheduling midterm because I physically couldn't get myself out of the bed during the originally scheduled time"

/narcoleptic but was misdiagnosed as depressed at that point
//actually got the 2nd highest grade in the class on that midterm
///had to set my phone alarm for every 15 minutes - benefit of taking test by myself - and it woke me up 3 times in 2 hours, too

poorjon: Something something drink and derive.

/Had a calc prof who stared at the projector screen for a minute or two when the Mac plasma ball screen saver came on before finally saying "oh, you see it too. so it isn't just an acid flashback"

My friend had a calc grad student instructor who would frequently start writing in Cryllic letters on the chalkboard. They were all so damn terrified of him no one brought it up, and he never noticed (or if he did, never cared enough to apologize or correct it).

Made me feel better about *my* calc grad student instructor at the time, who wore the same t-shirt and fairly certain had his hair in the same ponytail all semester.

Math is fun.

/of course, the one awesome, ridiculously normal professor I had was an assistant professor who left after it was apparent he wouldn't get tenure
//but of course
///he had students coming to his office hours 3 or 4 semesters after they first took a class with him, cause he'd still help

CrispFlows: I'm actually surprised there isn't more math teachers driven to insanity from the inanity of the students.

If you RTFA, you would see that the students' actions were exemplary during the incident.

2012-10-02 12:48:05 AM
The most important thing to remember is that, if the mathematical formula don't match empirical reality, then it is the formula that is wrong, not reality.

/also, knowing what is wrong is an essential step in eventually determining what is correct
//everything can be modeled mathematically, if you know the right formula... even climate
///which is how you can tell AGW is fake... the accurate models don't produce the "hockey stick" graphs needed to justify forced social changes

Also, I'm out of eye bleach. Any donations? =(

You're going to MSU, and you joined FARK in 2003? What, did you join Fark when you were 10? (I get it, you're probably in grad school). Anyway, i now have you favorited in MSU green 5. Congrats on being there and witnessing what had to be seen to be believed.

Tatterdemalian: everything can be modeled mathematically, if you know the right formula

this is not true if you use actual computers instead of some sort of computer run by unicorns or fairies

Yes it`s from WIKI but it`s easy to copypasta from there so,

"Chaos theory is a field of study in mathematics, with applications in several disciplines including physics, engineering, economics, biology, and philosophy. Chaos theory studies the behavior of dynamical systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions, an effect which is popularly referred to as the butterfly effect. Small differences in initial conditions (such as those due to rounding errors in numerical computation) yield widely diverging outcomes for chaotic systems, rendering long-term prediction impossible in general.[1] This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future behavior is fully determined by their initial conditions, with no random elements involved.[2] In other words, the deterministic nature of these systems does not make them predictable.[3][4] This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos.

Chaotic behavior can be observed in many natural systems, such as weather"

And if you don't use computers, or understand and control for digital imprecision... what then?

/Einstein never used a computer
//and if mathematics couldn't control for chaos to a predictable degree, we would not have seen a single successful moon landing

I was in the first class that my Calc 1 teacher ever taught IN THE US. He was Mexican and his english was terrible, like nearly indecipherable-bad. (I can *speak* spanish and often wished he would just teach in that). It took me the whole first semester just to realize he was saying "evaluate". I would see him out every night at the bars, yet I made it to more classes than he did....he even missed test days, some days he was SOOOOO hungover. I told him at the final, when he asked how I did, that I probably failed he said "Don't worry you'll pass..." then winked.

Needless to say I failed and so did 21 out of the 24 in that class.

Passed it easily with my next professor.

Walked into Calc 2 and I heard a "I remember you" in a thick mexican accent....I turned right around, walked out the door and dropped the class.

Never saw him after that semester.
