Bungles: No, someone has displeased the Jews. It's the Times of Israel that's butthurt.

Ikea is being criticized for deleting images of women from the Saudi version of its furniture catalog, a move the company says it regrets.

That part led me astray. So, Israel is mad that Sweden knows the Arabs hate women?

Confusing.

Its not much of a stretch to guess why some of them muslims dudes are uptight.
Their religion tells them that this is bad.
I strongly disagree and I'm glad I am free to.

FTFY. No reason to hate Ikea, and, yes, of course an Israeli media outlet would point this out, even as women in Israel are forced to ride in the back of buses, put up with segregation during holidays, public events, shopping, etc. See, surprisingly, religious extremists occur in all religions and, just as surprisingly, are intolerant of similar activities performed by rival religions.

Mote in your neighbor's eye, beam in your own, etc., etc.

I am thoroughly convinced that, if the Muslim world had the technology for an artificial womb and a bio-engineered plague that killed only women, they would happily kill all the women.

"We should have reacted and realized that excluding women from the Saudi Arabian version of the catalogue is in conflict with the IKEA Group values," the company said.

OR,

the truth,

"We did it because women in Saudi Arabia are property, just like cattle, and have no use other than to lay down and make more Saudi's. So, our target demographic is the men, who are educated, and in charge of everything. Hey, at least we are honest.

Why hate Ikea? They seem good to me, although I never shop there.

Oh, now I remember why I never shop there; here in Austin TX (or Round Rock TX) their store is a maze that makes you walk a long twisty route. Other than that, they seem good.

Every store is a long twisty route, because you're being primed to buy, being led through the pages of Good Housekeeping. It works. It's not an accident.

Is that why the milk is kept in the far rear corner of the grocery store.

It's always so amusing seeing PC folks trying to deal with a fundamentalist Muslim country. When the irresistible force of PC-conformity meets the immovable object of religious fundamentalism there's usually some good derp produced in the process.

I'm wondering why the hell they didn't just have a "furniture only, no people" catalog instead.

That country only recent got around to using mannequins in their stores, rather than hanging the clothes up on fishlines like creepy ghosts.

It can pay to actually read tfa.

They apparently deleted women from the entire catalog. That was just the picture that the article (quoting from another paper) used as a sample.

Funny how you mention Rod Sterling. At Disney's Twilight Zone Tower of Terror..the rumor was they removed the ever present cigarette from Rod Sterling for the intro clip.

They actually just found a intro where he didn't smoke to edit it for the intro.

I'll have to pay attention next time they show the on TV too...another rumor was they where removing the Cig for the TV show re-runs and DVDs.. Disney DID remove the cig from the Pacos Bill cartoons for DVD.

It's not Ikea's ads that are necessarily sexist - it's their directions. We purchased a couple of items last year that required assembly, and apparently women are not needed to do much... The first item was a metal framed rolling shelving unit (covered in nylon material), which apparently needed a big strong man and a little boy to assemble. I did that myself. The other was my son's bedframe, which had the big strong man needing 3 hands to screw something in while balancing the frame on his leg, while the woman stood there and held the headboard with 1 hand.

In my short experience of being married to a guy I can say this: 1. some guys can't follow directions and 2. some women can hold up their end of the bedframe!

They didn't delete them. They just didn't add them. The IKEA catalogue is now computer generated. They no more "deleted them" than they "deleted the Japanese people" from Japanese version for the US version.

I haven't read through all the comments (busy day at work), and I've never shopped at Ikea, but to me it seems that instead of getting upset with Ikea about the change, we should worry about changing the Muslims view.

While it's easier to get mad at Ikea, we need to place the blame where it goes...

AugieDoggyDaddy: Too bad they didn't shoop the women into swarthy men. IKEA could use the cataloge in Saudi Arabia and not offend any Saudis by showing a picture of a woman. They could use the same cataloge in gay friendly markets, by showing people in a same sex relationship.

You've obviously never seen any Saudi TV ads, have you?

The one I remember best showed two guys leaving the gym after hitting the showers, and one complimenting the other about how nice his hair looks (it being a shampoo commercial, after all). From their mannerisms and the way they talked, it looked EXACTLY like an American body-care products commercial, only with guys in the role of gals.

Their teenage boys have no exposure to women and they often end up with guys in the roles of their girlfriends.

Are you really so new to Fark that you've never seen anyone criticize Ultra-orthodox Jews here? Or by "shut up" do you mean that Farkers will tell other Farkers to stop criticizing Ultra-orthodox Judaism?
