Just to re-emphasize this point, ANYTHING is better than a combover. Shave it, buy a hat or a wig, but face the situation like a man. And yeah, cut off the ponytail. It doesn't help. (Tho it's still better than a combover.)

/Mostly bald, but I just keep the remnants hacked back to near crewcut level, and wear a hat.

CheekyMonkey: CapeFearCadaver: CheekyMonkey: Eventually, I wised up and started growing it back in the winter.

Did the beanie not work for you?

Yeah, that's an alternative, if I want to wear a hat all the time.

The other problem is my girlfriend. When we met, I was shaving my head year-round. When I started growing it back in the winter, she decided that she liked me better with hair. I'm unwilling to forgo the comfort of being bald in the summer, but if 6 months of hair makes her happy, so be it...

aww, that's sweet. I was just teasing.

The last guy I dated kept his at a marine corps crew cut, I asked if being a former marine was why he kept his hair so close but he said it was because he had just started to go grey. He had been really busy with work and hadn't had the time to get his cut on for a few weeks, so I finally had the opportunity to see his 'grey'; barely any!!! I thought he looked hot with the sprinkling; told him so, too. Oh well.

I actually did it two weeks ago. It's... interesting, at least. What I had before was pretty bad. I still can't tell what's the mix of good/bad/silly/chemo I have going on though. Be careful with the back of the neck; I cut myself up a bit the first time because I wasn't being careful enough. I think I have a a few ingrown hairs or something back there too... I can't really see.

I was thinking about getting it done (or at least cleaned up) by a pro for exactly that reason. I have a pretty goofy face that no doubt will be accentuated, but it's not like my receding hairline was doing anything about that anyway...

I will say, being bald is one extra motivation to go to the gym. Bald and sloppy is a very bad look, you definitely need to get some muscle tone or you'll look like a chemo patient.

My experience is:

1) You are likely to cut yourself a few times the first time, no matter how careful you are, just like the first time you shaved your face. (If this didn't happen the first time you shaved your face, never mind.) I think that it's a combination of learning the correct angle and pressure for that part of your head, the skin having to "toughen up" somewhat, and your hitting moles, bumps, skin tags, and/or creases or ridges that you don't really know that they're there until you slice part of them off. Even if you don't usually use a styptic pencil, it might be a good idea to have one around.

2) Seriously consider getting a HeadBlade. You don't have to worry about having one of the fancy models, just go with the basic, which may be available at your local drugstore (Walgreen's carries them). If you use one, you'll probably have to touch up with your regular razor, especially around the ears, on the neck, and right at the base of your skull where the neck starts.

3) Because of the likelihood that you'll nick yourself, I'd suggest doing it on a Friday night the first time so that you can heal a bit over the weekend (assuming that you work M-F, or however else your schedule works). You'll get practice in sticking little bandaids on your own noggin, which is surprisingly tricky.

4) It's totally cool to spend at least a half-hour after your first shave stroking your own scalp. Even better if your girlfriend/boyfriend does the job.

Well, both #1 and #2 I'm sure I would be meeting in a dark alley to buy drugs from.

#1 would probably want to hang out and listen to good music, while #2 would probably burn me for the drug money.

Sorry :)

The evil professor looking guy is Lenin.

Stalin had most most kick ass head of hair that ever kicked ass, and arguably the most dangerous mustache of all time.

I mean just look at the man:

Benito Mussolini was thinning, and later shaved, and looked a lot like Putin.

Well with those two particular fellers, you really don't have much of a choice...

However, assuming I swung that way, and actually had a choice, I'd go for young Stalin
Though young Mao would make a good trap.

Incontinent_dog_and_monkey_rodeo: No paying for haircuts.
No buying combs, brushes, shampoo or conditioner.
No waking up and having to shower to fix your hair.
No worrying about your hair being messed up in pictures.
Pretty much a win all around.

I'm not hideously bald, but do have a silver good-sized spot on the crown that happened around age 34 (currently 38). It was pretty traumatizing. Now I just clip it very, very short and I can't believe I didn't do this sooner, even with a full head of hair. Not shaved, though, because I look like an idiot. It's basically a 5 o'clock shadow on the head, and it looks good. You can't really see the bald spot when it's that short.

Bonus: No more getting to work early to fix my helmet-hair.
I use the same soap on my head that I do on my body, so no more shampoo cluttering up my shower.
Save $35 a month in cuts, using a Wahl clipper instead and my neighbor who trims the back of my neck in exchange for me listening to her whine about her husband.

A pro-tip to bald guys, at least white ones: Dude, grow some facial hair. It looks much better and distracts from the bald. Plus, it's just badass to have a beard. I love mine.

One piece of comment I saw when I was looking around before doing it myself was someone saying something similar to "Feel free to rub it and see what it feels like. But be prepared for everything to feel different, from hats to pillows." And I'd add "wind", as someone else said. I live in Wisconsin, so I'm a bit worried about the implications of that one for late January/February, but whatever, I'm sure it'll be fine. :-)

The more hair you lose, the more head you get.

2012-10-01 07:31:07 PM
I started thinning about 26 (32 now), I have been contemplating going "Full Baldy" this year as it has been getting a bit worse, but instead just keep using the clippers at crew cut, as i still have a bit left and I think shaving as often as I have to for my beard on my scalp would be a total pain in the ass. Plus I am kinda scared what my head shape and ears would look like all the way. (see Rick Scott or Golem). I just need to get back to working out more and keep the crew cut for the rugged look.

Also, what's with people giving a crap of somebody's choice to shave it off saying it's pretending. News flash, the dude who has the shaved head doesn't give a crap what you think. Same thing with people who criticize guys with thinning hear for wearing hats out in the daytime. . . hint-it's called Scalp Burn, dumbass. I know my hair is thinning and don't care what you think, but don't want to go around inviting the pain of burning the crap out of my scalp just because you think I'm trying to hide something!

I like chicks with buck teeth, glasses, and big noses. Flat chested.

Why?
Buck teeth = over bite = oral fixation.
Glasses = over strained eyes= reads a lot = Smart.
Big noses = unlikely to snore when sleeping.
Flat chested = easier to roll over when they do snore.

Genetically perfect model of a female, if you ask me.

Started thinning at 16. Didn't notice because my hair was so thick to begin with, and long. Then I joined the Army and had to cut it short, still, I looked normal. By 2006, I had a serious bald spot, and the top was very thin. Had tried shaving once in 2008, didn't like the way it felt with a hat on, so I grew it back out. Halloween last year, broke up with my last girlfriend and decided to try shaving again. Every time I go to my local bar, most of the women take at least a minute of their time to rub my soft and smooth head, and I have gotten more female attention in this last year than all other time I was single combined. I also have a goatee that I can nearly tuck into my shirt collar, and women love to twirl it around between their fingers.

All my pics are on my facebook, and I sure as hell am not linking to that here.
