Remind me not to travel to Greece until they get redundant power feeds to their ATC facilities. 50 year old technology: how does that work again?

Terrorism is child's play.

And the TSA is a childish response.

This is the type of disruption terrorists should/could easily perform.

No airliner hijack needed to terrorise modern society.

I don't know what the regs are in Europe, but under the FAA regs balloons get right of way.

So that scene in Breaking Bad where the guy lets a bunch of Mylar balloons float up towards some power lines, instantly causing sparks to fly and everything around to go dark... that could work?

/brb, off to commit mayhem
//actually I should probably wait until after sunset

Couple years ago had a big blimp over our sales lot. Damn thing was big and very noticeable, cost like $2500.00.

Anyway, one day after adding more helium the salesman did not secure it properly and away it went.

We still talk about the missing blimp and wonder how far it went. That thing could still be riding the jet stream circling the earth.

Kinda glad we didn't have our contact info on it as it probably has caused a couple planes to go down.

Oh, a lot of Europe is like that.

There was a crash in Switzerland a year or two ago when the ATC needed to go for a wee. Technology failure not required for a disaster.

A Mylar balloon caused a power outage?!? Is insulation on power lines unheard of at airports?

2012-10-01 02:03:19 PM
Why are they profiling it as being a helium balloon? That's discriminatory! It could be a hydrogen or methane balloon! They should be calling it a balloon of unknown lifting medium, or a Greece-Balloon object!

Primary ( high voltage) lines are not insulated.

And a Mylar balloon would short these out?
