I really, really hate that phrase, but it and "facepalm" really were the only two things that came to my mind as I read the article.

I think if it had been a US president the suspects body would end up so full of holes they'd have to use a mop to collect his body.

A pellet gun? So even the deranged gunmen in Europe are taking austerity measures?

I realize it is a plastic BB gun and all, but damn people at least act to the weapons profile. For that matter when the guy has time to give media interviews after the shooting your security is way too loose. He didn't have to die in a hail of gunfire or anything, but at least tackle him for farks sake.

Umm, not really, it happens all the time with the police. Someone points a replica gun or even a cellphone at the police, and they get shot. Generally there aren't much inquires. Suicide by police.

You do know that when that happened, the President was nowhere near the country, right?

2012-10-01 12:52:26 PM
The video is insane. After the guy gets shot with the airsoft, the bodyguards just sort of mill around with a "hm...that was interesting. Wonder what that was?" look on their faces. Secret Service would have thrown the President to the ground and covered him with their bodies while the rest of the team tackled and beat the shiat out of the assailant, if not turned him into chunky salsa as mentioned above.

Uproar? People using fake weapons get shot and killed all the time. There's usually no uproar. If it looks like a gun and you point it at someone expect to get shot.

I play airsoft and the community is always worried about headlines like this

The gun control freaks are always looking for ways to shutdown anything "scary looking weapon" related. Airsoft is only lightly regulated right now, the only regulations federally are that they cannot be made in a way that they can be modified to fire real ammunition, and if they are being transported across state lines, then they MUST have a blaze orange ring at the end of the barrel at least 1/2 inch thick...

Official Airsoft Ohio events are community regulated though, and regulations are pretty tight for safety reasons. FPS limits, Full seal ansi rated eye protection, no full auto indoors, age limits, that sort of thing.

Decent airsoft guns, not the crap you would buy at walmart or Dick's sporting goods, are 95% scale replica's of real world modern arms and have removable blaze orange tips.

Good models are 1:1 weight and scale and are used by LEO and MIL for training.

Couple years ago the top manufacturer of professional training weapons (PTW for short) systema had to redesign their M4 receivers because the BATFE determined they could be slightly modified to fit internals of a real m4 and fire real ammunition. The recievers were milspec CNC billet aluminum. You couldn't get a Systema in this country for a year or so until they got BATFE approval, i think you can pick up new ones now for about $1200-$1500 depending on the dealer...

Because the models are so realistic, but they aren't real guns, they are very attractive to immature kids and teenagers who want to run around the park playing "Modern Warfare" and shoot them in full view of people...

Regulators in the gov't cream their panties over these kinds of stories because they get to regulate the "scary looking gun" replicas and toys into oblivion since they can't regulate the real ones.

Bingo. You pointed a device that looks like a gun in the President's general direction. Heck, you just pulling it out is reason for the SS agents guarding him to go to defcon 4.

Most americans would conclude 'Suicide by SS Agent', not a 'big deal' at all. Remember, we rate self defense in context of 'apparent threat', not 'actual threat'. You stick your hand in your coat and threaten to shoot somebody, it's our legal right to assume you actually have a gun in there and therefore the ability to carry out your threat.

I wouldn't even go pointing a blaze orange tipped airsoft at anybody - It'd be approximately an hour's work to render one of my actual guns to have an orange tip, and that includes driving time to the store to pick up the paint.

While I do think that this is as dangerous and stupid a thing to do, I have to admit that it is morally superior to actually assassinating somebody.

A man once tried to assassinate Andrew Jackson. Both his pistols misfired and a few short moments later, the would-be assassin was being chased down the street by President Jackson delivering blows from his cane.

There are a lot of people here with a ridiculously inflated sense of the US President's security. Before the Colombian snafu, the Secret Service allowed the Salahis to bluff their way into a State dinner and put their arms around Biden. Before Obama, Bush wasn't much safer - al-Zaidi threw a shoe at Bush. He dodged; the Secret Service was caught so flat-footed that al-Zaidi got a second shoe off before being stopped.

These breaches are common. Well-thought-out assassination attempts by people who aren't being watched by the NSA/CIA are rare.

There would be a huge uproar with comments accusing them of incompetence because they couldn't tell in a fraction of a second that something designed to look real wasn't as well as comments asking why they couldn't have shot him in the leg because everyone knows that a small hole in your thigh renders you incapable of applying 5 lbs of pressure to an object using one of your fingers.

No, those airsoft guns are often steel but just happen to shoot plastic bb's. They are generally modeled in size and weight to a real firearm. Part of the reason they cost almost as much.

Depends on the situation.
Getting involved in a gunfight means hanging around a killing field. Their job more likely focuses on getting their ward to safety at all costs, even if it means becoming meat shields.

That said, Presidents are also beloved figures in American society (even with the Red state vs Blue state politics).
There's a good chance the police or the public will do what the Secret service didn't, so its not like they have to take the guy out.

/Hinkley may be holding up, but Oswald's seen better days.
/I dare say if they abandoned Hinkley to the crowd, there wouldn't have been enough of him left to declare insane.

There's a paintball range near Fort Knox, most of the time the urban environment field is being used by Army guys in full gear with replica airsoft rifles. It's an excellent learning tool for the military.
