Lachwen: That's a remarkably calm reaction for a man whose bodyguards just completely failed at being bodyguards.

He shoulda punched the kid out like that one Canadian Prime Minister did when someone tried to assassinate him.

Also think of the awesome opportunities for making a witty tough-guy statement.

"Hey punk, you know what time it is? It's CZECH-OUT time!" POW!!

CeroX: Regulators in the gov't cream their panties over these kinds of stories because they get to regulate the "scary looking gun" replicas and toys into oblivion since they can't regulate the real ones.

I'm reminded of this old George Carlin bit: And now, they're thinking about banning toy guns - and they're gonna keep the farking real ones!

While I do think that this is as dangerous and stupid a thing to do, I have to admit that it is morally superior to actually assassinating somebody.

A man once tried to assassinate Andrew Jackson. Both his pistols misfired and a few short moments later, the would-be assassin was being chased down the street by President Jackson delivering blows from his cane.

There are a lot of people here with a ridiculously inflated sense of the US President's security. Before the Colombian snafu, the Secret Service allowed the Salahis to bluff their way into a State dinner and put their arms around Biden. Before Obama, Bush wasn't much safer - al-Zaidi threw a shoe at Bush. He dodged; the Secret Service was caught so flat-footed that al-Zaidi got a second shoe off before being stopped.

These breaches are common. Well-thought-out assassination attempts by people who aren't being watched by the NSA/CIA are rare.

hdhale: vudukungfu: Russ1642: I think if it had been a US president the suspects body would end up so full of holes they'd have to use a mop to collect his body.

Because staying up at all hours doing blow off of hookers butts make a guy kinda edgey.

Actually....yes it does.

/though can you imagine the uproar when, after the Secret Service filled the guy so full of holes you needed a mop to clean him up and it turned out he was only holding an airsoft gun?

I actually don't think there would be much of an uproar. Most people would say "you made your bed".

We don't take too kindly to threats on our elected officials, let alone the highest in the country..

Spoken truly as someone who doesn't have a clue.

There would be a huge uproar with comments accusing them of incompetence because they couldn't tell in a fraction of a second that something designed to look real wasn't as well as comments asking why they couldn't have shot him in the leg because everyone knows that a small hole in your thigh renders you incapable of applying 5 lbs of pressure to an object using one of your fingers.

FTA: "He opened fire with a handgun that fires plastic pellets used in a game called airsoft, similar to paintball, Nova TV said on its website."

Okay, that seems a little off for some reason.

Two points I know farkers will have a hayday with. Klaus is a global warming denier and this airsoft guy is active in the Communist party (which regularly gathers about 10% of the vote nationwide)

I smell a round of pink slips coming for everyone on that security detail.

ha-ha-guy: I realize it is a plastic BB gun and all, but damn people at least act to the weapons profile. For that matter when the guy has time to give media interviews after the shooting your security is way too loose. He didn't have to die in a hail of gunfire or anything, but at least tackle him for farks sake.

No, those airsoft guns are often steel but just happen to shoot plastic bb's. They are generally modeled in size and weight to a real firearm. Part of the reason they cost almost as much.

I don't think that, had this been in the US with the SS guarding President Clueless, the assailant would have been shot. Hookers and blow aside, the SS is too well trained to fire into a crowd.
Hinkley's looking pretty good for a dead man...

Depends on the situation.
Getting involved in a gunfight means hanging around a killing field. Their job more likely focuses on getting their ward to safety at all costs, even if it means becoming meat shields.

That said, Presidents are also beloved figures in American society (even with the Red state vs Blue state politics).
There's a good chance the police or the public will do what the Secret service didn't, so its not like they have to take the guy out.

/Hinkley may be holding up, but Oswald's seen better days.
/I dare say if they abandoned Hinkley to the crowd, there wouldn't have been enough of him left to declare insane.

I know a lot of guys that use airsoft replicas of their real guns for practice. Cheaper and easier to do without specialized stuff.

I see no mention of a modified wooden toilet roll holder.

I love this meme.

Al_Ed: vudukungfu: You *do* know that when that happened, they got caught.
Make you woner how much of that goes on evey day, in D.C but you never hear about it because it's as normal as having domino's delivered.

It happens *much* more than what you hear about...you'd be shocked.

i have the feeling deep doo-doo happens pretty regularly and we don't hear about it. just as there are hardcore patriots that sacrifice their lives to keep us all happy and healthy. we will never know their names or hear their stories. sincere thanks to these people who allow us to continue to live in the land of plenty.

There's a paintball range near Fort Knox, most of the time the urban environment field is being used by Army guys in full gear with replica airsoft rifles. It's an excellent learning tool for the military.
