This year for the first time two bots achieved humanness ratings of over 50%. The human players, by contrast, achieved average humanness ratings of just 40%.

More human that human.

People still use this abhorrently tired meme-question, so it certainly seems feasible that they still play the UT series.

Leave your Q2 disc in the bin, but fire up Q3, which is still a better shooter than 98% of the FPS on the market. (as is UT2003)

I liked UT 2004 just fine. I waited for UT 3 hoping they could recapture some of the magic they created with "classic" UT (1999) but it never happened. UT 3 was a pile of suck.

Yes you should - you'd be surprised how much better it is today than on hardware of 8 years ago. Maybe you wouldn't... I happened to have played UT2004 this past weekend. I bought the game almost a decade ago, but of course I have no idea where mine went so a few months ago I DLed a copy on TPB and don't feel bad about it, don't even feel it was illegal. In mind it isn't, and that's all that matters....your honor.

Anyway, mid-beer Saturday I just got this idea to check out how it would play on what is today a pretty middle to even low end gaming system - a Phenom black edition quad core 3 Ghz, with 8 Gig of ram and 550 ti video card. 1920 x 1200 with everything maxed plays VERY nice and looks darn good for such an oldie. And of course I totally kicked ass. Those bots had no chance;)

I don't think that one day, someone will announce that they're created an A.I. as you'd think of in a book or movie; one you can converse with, or verbally command to control your house, or inhabits some sort of robot body so you can think of it more like a person, instead of software, or a machine. I think it'll happen in these types of little steps, to the point where they'll become so integrated into your life, you won't notice it at all. That way, when a car manufacturer comes out with a car that drives itself, reads you your email and text messages, and plays back any voicemail while displaying FARK on the inside of the smartglass windows while it takes you to work, it won't seem futuristic and daunting, it'll be something you've expected to have for some time.

Censored? Getting laughed at on the internet for maintaining loyalty to a political party that champions gender attitudes of the 1950s, jingoistic nationalism, neo-confederate revisionism, and economic policies that have caused global collapses on more than one occasion isn't censorship; it's the social cost of publicly wallowing in arrogant stupidity.

Gotta agree, and so would my brother. He was near the top of the leaderboards back in the day. Railgun loops and jumping FTW.

I do have to say, I've been totally disappointed at the direction AI has gone in games lately. Hell, it's taken a step back in most, and difficulty is just increasing the enemies sponginess, accuracy, and aggression while lowing you armor and increasing the damage you take. Most games you put it on hard, and it wonderfully shows you how broke the AI really is. COD is notorious for it, but they're all like it.

Guess they just don't want to spend CPU cycles on making better AI. Seems the last advancement in AI was around HL2, and not much has come sense.

I remember making skin mods for Q2, so much fun but it was a little frustrating. Now that I think of it, what happened to all the Q2 mod community? Online shooters peaked with Jedi Knight I. There was actual strategy.

I never played Quake or Unreal, but I suspect there was in those games, too.

Nowadays, it's all instant death from someone you never had a chance of seeing and the instant killing of someone who never had a chance to see you.

I remember when you could potentially size up your opponent, the weapons you were both using, and other factors and decide what to do from there. Use cover. Set a trap. Even run away. Or run away and try to double back after grabbing a powerup. Whatever.

Now, every firefight is over before it starts.

The real problem is that it wasn't rushed. It was delayed and delayed again. What was it supposed to be originally? UT2007? or something like that?

My friends and I, long time Unreal Tournament players, were hoping for a hit because our 'community' was slowly dying out. UT3 basically killed it.

That and the aging membership. :)

Ugh.... AI.
Paradox makes all those really nifty grand strategy games, and then shackles them with terrible AI. Difficulty is achieved by making the computer cheat, not by actually making the computer value strategy. Hearts of Iron 2 had a nasty bit of "working as designed" AI where enemy naval units had unlimited range because they didn't know how to program AI naval units. You could play a game as Japan and the instant you went to war with the Allies, the entire British and American navies parked themselves outside of Tokyo.
They later gave out the source code to an enterprising mod team, and what was one of the first things added? AI NAVAL RANGES.
It's somehow only gone downhill from there, as pre-Europa Universalis 3 games had AI files you could get into and edit to at least give the computer an idea of what to value, but EU3 and later have all had unmodable AI that doesn't know how to prioritize anything.
Fun games, but Jesus, they've got to be able to tell the AI not to put every unit it owns into one square and then march it towards the enemy. It's kind of depressing that you can't do defense-in-depth because if you do anything other than clump your army together the way the AI does, the AI is going to outnumber you, cheat, and beat you every time.

Weekend deahtmatching is typically playing all of the large UT levels, as well as our special Q3A tournament: all levels in reverse order, from a 20 frag/5min limit to finally 60 frag/5min limit for the training level.

We tried the newer UT games but they suck in comparison to the playability of UT, especially after all the rum's gone.

LiberalWeenie: Relevant: I suck at Call of Duty  (video, pops)

That was actually pretty impressive.

IMO, each game is what you make it. CoD, Counnterstrike, or Halo. Each requires special strategy, even with each game you can only do certain things from certain places on certain maps(except for snipers that manage the whole quick/noscope(depending on the game) thing).

Strategy will only carry you so far, I can pretty much go 1 for 1 on kills/deaths or a bit better. The games, however, keep evolving to favor the other side of the ball, pure aim ability, do to a very vocal minority. The upcoming Blackops is probably going to be skipped, or played very little, for those reasons. Camping is becoming a thing of the past with the stationary player always showing on a UAV regardless of perks. Mw3 already doesn't let the player use the environment as cover(Ie crawling in a bush is nigh on impossible).

Little by little, they're removing tactics such as traditional sniping and tactical possession of a map, and doing very little to avoid spawn traps or similar exploits.

StoPPeRmobile: Console version, figures.

One playing on a console version of the game, as you indicate, means nothing because everyone else there is playing on a console as well. In that given lack of cross-platform playability, actual skill / tactics still get to shine and people with some talent will still shine, while people with sub-par talent will totally suck nuts(in a best case scenerio anyhow).

Console controls on a console are no worse than mice on the pc version, it's when you mix the two controls that the differences emerge.

People using third party hardware(keyboards and mice) on a console are considered cheaters for that reason, and PC players using a 360 controller are shunned for sucking, or oddly enough, still kick ass, then they're shunned and booted from the server for some inane excuse, but no real reason other than "I got my butt handed to me so I'll boot him from my server, that'll teach him to not let me win on MY server"

I get a kick out of PC "master race" people who think they're superior, when really the mouse reduces such games into "easy mode". My 8 year old niece can point and click headshots.

People still use this abhorrently tired meme-question, so it certainly seems feasible that they still play the UT series.

Leave your Q2 disc in the bin, but fire up Q3, which is still a better shooter than 98% of the FPS on the market. (as is UT2003)

Sorry, can't do that. I loved Q2 more than Q3. The weapons were more fun (and the Q3 BFG just didn't do it for me at all).

I agree Q2 was a much better game. I bought the metal tin limited version and played it for a times and stashed it away. I spent too much time on Q2 back in the day.

I played it nearly 6 hours a day at one point. Longer on weekends. I miss those days sometimes, but not showing up to work with 4 hours of sleep :)

I remember making skin mods for Q2, so much fun but it was a little frustrating. Now that I think of it, what happened to all the Q2 mod community? I knew some really awesome people, and the model makers had a few good things (someone actually made a Q2 model that blinked and did faces, pretty awesome back then).

I used to make prefabs for Q2 because I didn't want to spend the time building and compiling complete maps. I also used to spend most of my Quake playing time on Jailbreak. There's a small sleepy but still breathing community board that evolved from Q2JB to Q3JB to JB:POW (Prisoners of War). You can find it here. hard to believe I've known some of those guys for almost 13 years.
