Meh, you think that's BS? I LOL at you sir. As an IT guy for a school district I'll tell you what's BS. My job is soooo much more BS from your point of view. I work 8-4 M-F no weekends never on call and all the Holidays that the teachers get, I get. I get paid a considerable amount more than they do...roughly 150% of their salary. I get all the holidays they get and about the only difference in my schedule and theirs is that I have to come back to work a month earlier than they do during the summer. I don't have to deal with the little crotchfruit or their helicopter parents, I don't have to create lessonplans or grade homework at night, no lunch duties or parent teacher conferences or chaperoning the prom.

Basically what I am saying is don't biatch so much about the teachers, they actually do more work than the non-certified personnel in a school district. Go after the admin and people who provide indirect services to the district, that's where the real waste is.

Lesson plans and similar are the property of the teacher. Materials such as curriculum maps and texts designated by the school would be the property of the school. Unfortunately, many teachers routinely use textbooks and curriculum maps as the curriculum and methodology, thus lesson planning for them consists of writing down the page numbers.

jaytkay: Math has not changed. 2+2 still equals 4.

The underlying rules are the same, but our understanding does change. And with that, what we think kids should understand changes. You get folks who think that elementary school kids should be taught rudimentary set theory. Or change between word problems and doing lists of multiplication problems. So that's what changes, and why there's differences between decades.

Why a lot of teachers write their own material is that math requires thought, if you're doing anything other than simple lists of problems like 2+(3*5)=___. So you have to teach kids to THINK. And everyone has their own style for that, and a good teacher has a few different styles of teaching that.

2012-09-30 05:15:38 PM
I am uncertain what to think of this:

On one hand, good for her; getting extra cash for extra work and all (and not letting it change her too much - though to be fair, one million isn't necessarily going to set up anyone for life. Besides, do we know she earned it all in one year? I might have missed that.)

On the other hand, as a H.S. teacher (project based learning, physics and astronomy) I don't think I have any lesson plan that is solely my intellectual property (at least not enough to feel OK selling it). I rake through internet sites (of free plans) and discuss with my peers about nearly everything I do (I actually work with a team of three physics teachers, and we have different levels of input on any one of our plans - It would be difficult to fairly divvy up the earnings)

/Maybe I'm just jealous I didn't think of this earlier?

How much of that "charity" was straight into church coffers? There's a difference between "I gave money towards mental health programs" and "I gave money to help build a shiny new temple for my religion." It's not a legal difference - the IRS doesn't really care - but there are ethical implications.

Charity Navigator, the newest of several private sector organizations that rate charities by various criteria and supply that information to the public on their web sites, found that, as of 2004, 70 percent of charities they rated spent at least 75 percent of their budgets on the programs and services they exist to provide, and 90 percent spent at least 65 percent. The median administrative expense among all charities in their sample was only 10.3 percent.

In contrast 70 cents of each dollar budgeted for government assistance (69 means tested Federal government programs) goes not to the poor, but to the members of the welfare bureaucracy and others serving the poor.

So most of the LDS charities are aimed towards making more Mormons via evangelism, or helping only LDS people? Color me shocked.

jaytkay: There are some new teaching methods. Maybe they're better methods, OK then we write a new lesson plan every decade or two. But math has not changed.

The methodology always has to shift. What the students need is different student to student and year to year, and our system sadly packages them altogether based primarily on age. Demands on teachers change, and what is required to be taught is often not plausible other than with superficial instruction. This idea I will be teaching place value on the third day of the fourth week and this will require thirty minutes is a ridiculous conception of education which several teachers fall into and parents and administrators often expect. Plus, our education of our educators does not prepare them with materials, and creating authentic learning experiences takes an enormous amount of time which requires years of effort to accrue.
