I can appreciate John Deacon's attitude. Queen did die with Freddie, and performing with another vocalist is just keeping the corpse going with life-support.

I wish this slideshow would disappear.

Newsflash: old rockers actually can retire instead of embarrassing themselves like Alice Cooper, Kiss, Stones, the Who, and on and on.

amen to that. really wish more of them would quit embarrassing themselves. trying to be 21 when you're 60 something is just so sad and pathetic. it's even worse for the mega-wealthy like the Stones. no need to 'work'. sure I love the boys but for god sake, reel in the huge ego and just hang it up, mates.

Jeff Mangum anybody?

Also, what about Outkast? I know the actual members have released a few things here and there, but the band itself has been gone for far too long.

When I saw the headline I thought it would be a list of people like Richey Edwards, so was a bit surprised to see they think David Bowie is a recluse. He's not a recluse, just got a bit of dignity.

Yeah, but I miss him.

Well, Bowie's been pretty busy protecting the Guild Of Calamitous Intent from attacks by Phantom Limb and the Revenge Society, so...

Seemed to be pretty arbitrary ratings. Artist A is still releasing music, albeit not the stuff that Rolling Stone is interested in, but he's not schmoozing the press, so he's more of a recluse than Artist B, who hasn't cut an album in 20 years.

I dunno. I don't care how "public" a person is so long as they're still releasing stuff. And it's a little unfair to throw in guys like Billy Joel or Bowie, who have retired. They're not recluses at all. They hung up it up. Hell, they even remark on that with the Everly Brothers and Fats, but include them, anyway.

It occurs to me I am just wasting more time replying to that crap.

And who the hell cares about the chick in Smashing Pumpkins? That band was always Corgan. Everyone else in it was a live stand-in for him.

Finally, I don't think Agnetha is a recluse. She just hates Björn.

maybe it was the comparisons to Syd Barrett, but considering most of the list has been fairly active in recent-ish years, this list is largely bullshiat. Even if they weren't very recently active, most of them around for decades. I figured this would be a Syd Barrett, Skip Spence, Jeff Mangum, Kevin Shields, etc. type list. (though Kevin would be debatable.)

I'll never understand why the Stones seem to be targeted with this argument. I mean, nobody really goes around saying B.B. King is too old to play and should just hang it up. John Lee Hooker was playing into his 80's, and people seemed fine with it. If I close my eyes so I can't see their wrinkly faces, the Stones' music still sounds really well played.

Ageism, what a funky hang-up, man!

So, not showing up for Jann Werner's rock and roll hof thing is the ultimate in recluse, according to Rolling Stone.

But anyone who skips their own induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame gets a minimum of three Barrett points.

Where is Van Morrison, then?

Oh yeah, he doesn't need to be all Kardashian with the media. Never did.

I thought Mangum was already a "recluse" by the time In The Aeroplane Over The Sea even became a thing in the greater consciousness. IIRC, few people even gave a crap about that album until a good few years after it had been released, and since that was the last NMH album, he was already long dug into whatever cave he lives in.

I'm sad about Billy Joel. I really love him (I've seen him live half a dozen times) but he really did lose his passion for it.
You could tell after the divorce (or towards the end) his music just wasn't the same.
River of Dreams was just awful.

I get he was getting older, but man, I love me some early Billy Joel

In 1981 Dan Treacy (of the Television Personalities) wrote the song
I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives

Sometime in the mid to late 90's Dan Treacy fell off the face of the Earth, causing Dr. Frank (of the Mr. T Experience) to write the song
I Don't Know Where Dan Treacy Lives

Dr. Frank has, thus far, not disappeared... to the best of my knowledge.

um. I thought it wasn't that he couldn't be found, it was just that he went back to living a normal life, doing construction jobs, etc. for years.
I could be wrong though.

What I do know is that he wasn't popular in American after two albums, so quit, but somehow they found their way to South Africa and Australia(?) and became massively popular there.

/heard the cbc segment about him on "as it happens". Cool story.

For me Mick came to mind 1.) because I just saw him on SNL with the same hair color he had in 1966 and we all know his hair is really way grey / white and 2.) it was what, 15 years ago when I last saw the Stones in concert - in one of their very many 'farewell tour' shows. 3.) I myself have grown very old and tired since the 1960's so I know personally how hard it is to get out of bed in the morning.

I too am a huge fan of B.B. and I loved Mr. Hooker. Oddly enough, those old black blues cats were ALWAYS old black blues cats to me. They were ancient when I was a kid and they never change. Sadly the old black blues guys have mostly just died off on us. Those men are also a whole different level of cool that other musicians couldn't possibly hope to pull off. Cats like Miles Davis, same way. Too cool to criticize.

I do agree, the Stones sound just as fine as ever, without a doubt. And not a month goes by that I don't spin Sticky Fingers - my god what a rock masterpiece. As for ageism, I think I may be that way because of my own old self. A lot of music requires high energy, attitude and /or anger. These things are in steady supply in ones youth. For me those days are long gone and I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

I sort of agree with you, but it's not like he disavowed himself of what May and Taylor are about. They tour as Queen with his blessing, he just doesn't want to do it any more.

I can respect the decisions of both parties. I mean, May and Taylor can't possibly be doing it because they need the money. The romantic in me likes to think they do it because it helps them feel a connection to FM.
