Going to the first game of the Rangers-Angels doubleheader. Not crazy about the 12:05 start time but what can you do?

2012-09-30 09:40:08 AM
Someone almost has to clinch at least a wildcard spot today. That said what is the second tiebreaker when both teams would make the playoffs.

I believe they play a one game tie-breaker.

Still hoping for a Beltway Series. That would hopefully shut up the Phillies, Sox and Yankees for a while.

Actually, it would be more appropriate if the Rangers were playing the Mariners than the Angels today. We are having rather Seattle like weather this weekend.

It depends. If the two teams tied are two division winners or two wild cards, they go to the numerical tie breaker. 1st is H2H, 2nd is division record, 3rd is last 81 non-interleague games.

If it's between a division winner and a wild card, yes, they play an extra game.

kronicfeld: Still hoping for a Beltway Series. That would hopefully shut up the Phillies, Sox and Yankees for a while.

What do you mean? I haven't seen a peep out of Philly fans this year, we all know what a dismal state the Red Sox are in, and Yankees fans (at least the ones on Fark) tend to only be vocal when A) attacked or B) a cheap shot at the Red Sox arises.

As for clinching scenarios, the Rangers will clinch a spot if the Rangers win either game against the Angels today (double header).
Yankees and O's clinch with any 2 of a win and/or Angels loss.

2012-09-30 11:14:44 AM
the Brewers were very meh this year, but when aren't they. At this point there is technically still a chance for them to make the wild card, but I wouldn't bet on it

How has Texas not clinched something? Even if they lose the rest of their games there's only one other team that could have a higher record than them that's not a division winner. Either the Yankees or Baltimore will win the division, the other will probably be a Wild Card. The Rays can't catch them, the Angels can't catch them.

What am I missing?

Well, according to Cool Standings (put it on their "dumb" settings where they essentially play out the season like 100,000 times with a flip of a coin)... Texas gets into the playoffs 99.9% of the time.  Not 100%.  So there must be some very rare series of events that doesn't allow them to clinch*

*Chances are the worst they could do is find themselves in a tiebreaker situation, which in baseball has to be played out on the field with actual games.

Yeah, technically Detroit can collapse.  But even if they tried to lose this thing, I think the White Sox will give this thing to you anyway.  Detroit can lose their next 4, and I still wouldn't bet on the White Sox taking the division.

LA is 5 games behind Texas with 5 games to play. Oakland is 1 behind. If Texas lost out, LA won out, and Oakland ended up winning the division, LA and Texas would play a tiebreaker for the second wildcard. That's not terribly likely, of course.

This is all assuming Baltimore and NY split the AL East and the first wildcard. I think Tampa would pretty much be eliminated in this scenario.

The Tigers blew a 3-game lead with 4 to play in 2009, forcing them to a tiebreaker game. And in 2006 they got swept by the Royals in the last series of the season to lose the division then (but were saved by the wildcard).

Plus, the White Sox get to play Cleveland for their last series.

Cleveland took 2 of 3 from the White Sox last week and the Tigers last series ends with the Royals, who the Tigers just swept a week ago. I mean, anything can happen, but how they played a week ago is more relevant than 2006 or 2009, and things are looking good for the Tigers. *knocks on wood*

a 3 way tie for the wildcard is very possible and some people have been pointing this out for weeks. what a interesting mess that will be. all i know is i'm going to be on a cruise ship watching the ws while eating and drinking myself silly unless it ends in a 4 game sweep without any rainouts. hopefully this time the cruise line won't have a international feed in spanish for it.

Won't happen, the Yankees are destined to become the Tigers biatch for the 3rd time in the past 7 years.

2012-09-30 01:59:29 PM
This 2012 Orioles team is one of the strangest I have ever seen. Weird things just happen absolutely constantly. It's the kind of season that makes being a baseball fan worth it. I don't know why, I don't get that connection as much as football (which I do like, too). But like this year, Chris Davis comes in from DHing to pitch 2 scoreless innings to get the win in a 17 inning game. Strikes out two hitters including Adrian Gonzalez. I don't know, I think the football equivalent would be a punter playing at quarterback and marching the team downfield to win inside the 2 minute mark. Surreal to watch. And basically, that Chris Davis win is the thing that just keeps happening. Ryan Flaherty hit a grand slam on Friday night. This shiat is actually happening.

Popcorn Johnny: Won't happen, the Yankees are destined to become the Tigers biatch for the 3rd time in the past 7 years.

This actually worries me, almost to the point of rather getting the wild card than the division.
Though they've struggled this year, the Tigers are still very dangerous in a short series. I don't envy whomever gets the #2 seed (the AL Central winner is locked into the #3 seed), and unless something wacky happens, the Rangers are getting the #1. It's not all roses for the Rangers either; they (just like whomever winds up the NL #1 this year) have to play the first two games (of a 5 game series) on the road at the wild card game winner's field.

2012-09-30 02:06:13 PM

I'm pretty sure if the Tigers win and the Sox lose today it would mean the worst the Tigers can do is the tiebreaker. I like our chances in a single game against the white sox.

As much as I'm hoping the Yankees turn this game around (which can totally happen at only 2-1) so they can stay at least tied with Baltimore (wow I never thought I'd say that), I still stand by my statement that if this is Baltimore's year, so be it - they deserve one after this long. Still, get it together Yankees! Ichiro deserves a ring too.

Rex_Banner: Hmmmm - it's almost like they are having a really fluky year!

I want to clarify this - looking at all of their stats, traditional stats and advanced stats, they should be roughly .500. But they aren't. So either they're not as good as their record OR they've found a way to get the absolute most out of everything, seemingly in a way that few, if any, teams have done before. Either is possible. I'm not saying which one it is, and it doesn't really matter. It's fun when stuff like this happens. It makes the game more interesting. I'm just saying - this isn't a WAR thing. Is is just a very odd overall thing.

Kinda. They are 25-23 in "blowouts" (defined as 5+ runs), they are 28-9 in 1-run games, and are 16-2 (!!!!) in extra innings. As of right now, they are the best team EVER in 1-run games - which is kinda cool. Maybe it's entirely skill, maybe it's entirely luck, maybe it's a little mix of both, maybe it's some combination of being really, really, good at close games plus getting just a bit of luck to push them to record levels..... it doesn't really matter which one it is. After all, a win is a win regardless of how you got it. It's just really rare to see stuff like this. If they weren't fighting my team for the division, it'd be so much fun to watch.

ok, something I have to ask fellow Yankee fans.. would you rather:

A) lose the division outright and face (likely) Oakland in the Bronx for the wild card game for the chance to host the first two games of the ALDS against the Rangers or

B) tie the O's, have to play a 163 for the chance to have home field in a 5 game series against the Tigers?

50 saves for Jim Johnson. Orioles win 6-3. YES!

I don't want game 163. Even if you win, you still had you're own semi-one game playoff. And if you lose, you are effectively playing TWO one game playoffs, and the pitching will be totally farked come ALDS game 1 if they make it (seriously - we're probably talking Hughes or Nova for game 2 in this scenario. No thanks). At least they have a home game if they lose outright and play Oakland (in this scenario, at least)

Geez, none of those sound very good - I guess B. Having home field didn't help the Yankees last year against the Tigers and losing a pitcher to game 163 would suck, but Oakland has been a thorn in the Yankees side all year, so facing them in a 1-game playoff would be a big challenge.

True.... but facing ANYONE in a one game playoff would be a bog challenge. The thing with the one game format is that anything can happen - ANYTHING!!! You can pretty much throw out everything that happened before when it comes to that point

The Bestest: Angels just came back to take the lead over the Rangers on their last out.

It's funny - an hour ago, the Yankees looked like they were going to end the day a game back of Baltimore, giving them little hope of winning the division. But as of right now, there is a pretty decent chance that they end the day tied for best record in the AL.

Chap, I look forward to chatting it up again against the Yankees. However, I am more scarred about their late innings defense. Unless Benoit hangs one again today.

Well, now a lot hangs on the night Angels-Rangers game.

A Rangers win means the Rangers, Yanks and O's are all in.
An Angels win leaves the above three teams all tied for that #1.
An Angels win and A's loss leaves the Angels only a game back of the A's for the WC2 AND sorta throws the AL West wide open.

Provided the Yanks aren't dumb enough to pitch Salty inside (the biggest power threat in our crappy everyday lineup), they should steamroll to a sweep.

ANNNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDD The Yankees win 17 games in the month of September. Thus ends the month that began when a certain "fan" thought the Yankees would win less games in a month than an NFL team. They land up winning more games than an NFL season. It's actually one of their better Septembers ever. Terribly embarrassing.

I do as well. I have read the comments about the troubles Miggy got into a couple of years ago. I do believe he's changed and he has become a rock for new players on the Tigers team and also took third base so they could sign Fielder. It's been said that if he said he wouldn't move to third, they were not going to go after Fielder. In my opinion he is the definition of a team player.

I remember back in 2006, on fark actually, and someone posted "Good luck with the Wild Card" to a Twins fan with three games left for the Twins and three for the Tigers and Detroit up by three. I remember back in 2009 when Detroit had to simply win one game and they were in and they lost three or four in a row.

I will not take ANYTHING for granted. Not with these guys.

From a general baseball perspective, how great would it be if the Yankees-Orioles, Sox-Tigers, and Rangers-Angels/A's ALL ended the regular season tied? That would be THREE GAME 163'S ON TOP OF THE ONE GAME WILD CARD ROUND!

They won, but they're still sitting in the WC2 position, having to possibly fight off both the Angels and Rays to keep it. They do control their own destiny, however, and the WC1 (heck, even the AL West) are still in reach.

The Pirates problem is that up until a few years ago, they had a fire sale EVERY season. If you look at other small market teams (the Twins, The Rays), they will due this from time to time but not every year. There is no way you can stay competitive like that. Part of me is happy to see this since the most overrated player of all time, Willie Stargell, played for the Pirates. Consider it his curse.

Heh, nah.. check upthread.. I'm quite pessimistic about the Yankees chances this post-season. No one in the AL has clinched anything yet (though Rangers lead the Angels 8-4 in the 7th right now, and if they hold, Rangers, Yankees and O's are all in).

I'm watching it and pulling for the Angels. I've always had a soft spot for the Angels. When I was a kid, we used to ride our bikes in the Big A parking lot. Rex_Banner: Olympic Trolling Judge: Rex_Banner: Hmmmm - it's almost like they are having a really fluky year!

What's going on over there? Some kind of Electoral College thing where they win in squeakers and lose in blowouts?

The O's are a much different, and better, team now then they were 2 months ago.

Top 5 in hits, runs, HR.
Top in pitching (ERA, batting average against, and wins)
Top 5 in fielding.

They have a chance not only to make the playoffs and win the AL East, but to have the best record in the AL.

And by the way, it doesn't matter that this cliche is dated because FINALLY the Orioles have come back to the postseason.

It's a FARK league that I have won 3 years in a row, hipster whiny biatch.

Congrats Rangers, Orioles and Yankees.

Alright, so here's the dealie-O

AL:
Rangers - in - 1 game lead over the Yankees/O's for #1 - winning any of the final 3 games against the A's gives them the AL West
Yankees and O's - both in - 1 game lead over A's for WC1 - Yankees close out against Red Sox, O's against Rays
A's - in with a win or both an Angels and Rays loss - needs to sweep Rangers to win AL West
Angels and Rays - both need sweeps to stay alive - Angels close out against Mariners
Tigers - AL Central and #3 with any win or White Sox loss - finishes against Royals
White Sox - have to sweep Indians AND Royals have to sweep Tigers AND have to beat Tigers in a 163

NL:
Reds - NL Central champs - tied with Nats for #1 - close out against Cards
Nats - in - NL East with any win or Braves loss - finish against Phillies
Giants - NL West, #3 - position locked, finish with Dodgers
Braves - in- must sweep Pirates AND Phils must sweep Nats AND beat Nats in a 163 - WC1 clinched otherwise
Cards - WC2 with any 2 wins or Dodgers losses - finishes with Reds
Dodgers - 2 behind Cards with 3 to play, finish with Giants

Hopefully the Tigers win today so that I'll know if I get to work the playoffs. Extra money is great.

Popcorn Johnny: I'm enjoying the hell out of being a Tigers fan living in the heart of White Sox country. I'll have to put my Tigers hat away once the Tigers clinch so I don't get jumped and beaten.

I boarded a plane for San Diego the very day after the 1984 World Series. My Olde English D cap never made it off the plane with me. I'm positive someone flushed it somewhere over Kansastan.

Walking around town later that day, we found Padres - 1984 World Champion t-shirts: 75% off!

/looking forward to seeing Comerica Park lit up and keeping me company into the evening hours during the next two weeks of OT.
