All-time greatest horror movie sequels? That would be a very short list.

2012-09-30 04:09:14 AM
28 Weeks Later and Aliens about do it for me.

2012-09-30 04:11:47 AM
Yeah I was thinking Aliens would have to be #1 on that list but it's really a war movie in sci-fi setting, not a horror movie.

2012-09-30 04:40:05 AM
Gremlins was a charming Spielbergian horror-comedy that might have scared 10-year-olds. Gremlins 2 was a full-out comedy satire, how was that a horror movie?

2012-09-30 04:40:55 AM
Admittedly the same could be said about Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1 & 2.

2012-09-30 05:22:00 AM
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 had Dennis Hopper wielding dual chainsaws. I don't know what my point is but that actually happened.

Smashed Hat: Yeah I was thinking Aliens would have to be #1 on that list but it's really a war movie in sci-fi setting, not a horror movie.

It's still the sequel to a horror movie. So it has that going for it. Which is nice.

2012-09-30 07:18:01 AM
Aliens
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Evil Dead 2
Creepshow 2
Halloween 2 (original)
And I have a soft spot for Halloween 3, even though it's not particularly good.

That's about it. (28 Weeks Later sucked)

Texas Chainsaw 2 is one of the greatest sequels of all time. OF ALL TIME. Like many artistic masterpieces, it confounded critics and audiences at its release, but like a long simmering slag of your choice meats, it just falls off the bone after all these years.

oh man i am hungry. what were we talking about? oh yeah, Gremlins 2. Same idea really. Both sequels that looked at their originals and said screw it, lets go crazy

Oh and I believe the link involving Phoebe Cates and Presidents' Day seals this deal

How could that list not include "The Silence Of The Lambs"? It's technically a sequel (to "Manhunter").

Other good ones:

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2
Exorcist III
Aliens
Evil Dead 2
Halloween 3 (Silver Shamrock!)

2012-09-30 09:49:14 AM
Psycho 2 was pretty good. What? It was.

Silence of the Lambs is horror? I always thought of it more as a psychological thriller.

Gremlins and Gremlins 2 are considered more of a Christmas movie around my house.

Linger: Gremlins and Gremlins 2 are considered more of a Christmas movie around my house.

That reminds me of that bizarre story Pheobe Cates tells about her dad getting caught in the chimney. It was just such a strange non-sequiter.

Don't you pretty much have to go that route with a horror movie sequel? Otherwise you just keep repeating the same tired formula as the first movie.

Think of all the Leprechaun sequels,
Army of Darkness,
the upcoming Gigli 2

Gremlins is set at Christmas...Gremlins 2 is in the middle of summer.

The greatest ever is Hellbound. It is in fact the greatest horror movie ever.

2012-09-30 10:32:02 AM
I thought Haviland Morris looked pretty good in Gremlins 2 as well.

2012-09-30 10:46:05 AM
I recall in Gremlins 2 there's a scene when the two main characters are drinking Jolt. We were old enough to understand product placement and thought the big cola companies didn't want their products in that crap movie.

I dunno its has some gems:

Right now this building is on fire!

And of course this Fark favorite:

Canned food and shotguns

Gremins 2 WAS relatively well-reviewed.... If it doesn't make the list, its because its not a horror movie, not because it wasn't good.

Is Return of the Living Dead considered a sequel? If so, i think that one should on there.

2012-09-30 10:51:57 AM
Gremlins 2 was a farce used by the director to kill the franchise. He didn't want to make a sequel, so he said "If I have to, it'll be one HELL of a sequel." and it was.

Interesting story, actually.

2012-09-30 10:54:14 AM
Gremlins 2 ... horror? No. Comedy. I remember liking it when I saw it way back when. Particularly the scene where they're debating the feeding rules.

Missing from the list:

Feast 2, although I'm not sure it qualifies as horror
The Grudge 2. Japanese version.

2012-09-30 10:57:52 AM
Bride of Frankenstein is a great movie, and is the horror sequel all others should be judged by.

/Looking forward to my Universal Classic Monsters box set on Tuesday

kronicfeld: Aliens
Dawn of the Dead (original)

The Dawn of the Dead remake is as good if not better than the original Dead 2. The acting was pretty good as well as the special effect. The extras on the DVD are good as well, especially the short of the man who was trapped in the ammo store across from the mall. I didn't even have an issue with the "running" zombies.

ms_lara_croft: How could that list not include "The Silence Of The Lambs"? It's technically a sequel (to "Manhunter").

eh, I would argue that Silence of the Lambs is closer to a spin-off than a sequel.

I also wouldn't call Gremlins 2 a horror movie, though i think it's a good movie otherwise.

kronicfeld: (28 Weeks Later sucked)

For what it was, i thought it was good.... but it was largely pointless and mostly just negated the previous film.

First of all, Gremlins is a Christmas movie.

Most of that list was pretty awful.

Good horror movie sequels:
Aliens
Exorcist III
Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn
Army of Darkness (well, it was a sequel to a horror movie, though not very horrific)
Halloween II
Saw 2 (no it wasn't great, and the series started venturing into gore porn, but it was a decent continuation of the first -- they get increasingly ridiculous after this)
Nightmare on Elm Street 3

I'm sure there are others, but none are coming to mind.

2012-09-30 11:25:23 AM
No. Not horror.

Should Walter Mondale be considered one of the worst Presidents of the 1980s? Discuss.

No Jaws the Revenge? This time it's personal.

2012-09-30 11:27:08 AM
I think I fell asleep while watching Devils Rejects.

Anyways, I never considered Gremlins to be a "horror" movie, since it had a lot of comedy factor to it.

2012-09-30 11:31:19 AM
Poltergeist wasn't a "good" sequel but this guy scared the shiat out of me. So it was effective on one level.

I'd be remiss if I let a "horror sequels" thread go by without mentioning Ginger Snaps II: Unleashed. It is the best (yeah, yeah, ONLY) horror sequel worth anything resembling a good goddamn since Exorcist III With one hell of a climax. It's not better than the (excellent) first film but it's AS good, in my opinion (a claim I can't authentically make about any other horror sequel in the last 20 years). It's the misbegotten, utterly redundant third (and series-killing) third film that is truly a waste of money, time and celluloid.

I think it sould. I love Gremlins 2.

2012-09-30 11:35:04 AM
"The Woman" is a probably the best horror sequel I've ever seen. Though it stands on it's own and there isn't much continuity between it and the first movie, it's objectively the better film.

Confabulat: Oh and I believe the link involving Phoebe Cates and Presidents' Day seals this deal

Phoebe Cates

Everyone always thinks of the awesome mutant Gremlins when they think of The New Batch, but I always think of that speech first. Hilarious delivery and it's even better if you know what Joe Dante was going for. My favorite bit in the movie and the second best thing that Phoebe Cates has ever done.

T.rex: Is Return of the Living Dead considered a sequel? If so, i think that one should on there.

Depends on how you look at it. John Russo intended it to be a quasi-sequel, but Romero (along with most fans) doesn't knowledge it as such. In the movie they reference the film Night of the Living Dead but play it off as a dramatization of a real event, so it could be argued that it doesn't meet the qualifications. I've always been on the side of "no," myself.

2012-09-30 11:37:09 AM
I don't watch a lot of horror movies but I've always liked
Hellraiser 2
Evil Dead 2
And here's where I show my bad taste, the Nightmare on Elmstreet and Friday the 13th series. You just can't help but enjoy 80s and 90s schlock horror.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but I really liked Paranormal Activity 2 (and 3), and how they built a storyline out of the first and really fleshed it out in the sequels. Holding out hope that 4 doesn't turn flat-out ridiculous, and that they end before it just gets silly.

Also: WHAR CLOVERFIELD 2 WHAR.

Gunny Highway: The greatest ever is Hellbound. It is in fact the greatest horror movie ever.

Hellbound is a damn good movie but I put it equal to Hellraiser.
Hell On Earth was awful.
Bloodline had it's moments.
Inferno was actually pretty good for b-grade horror-suspense. Except it wasn't really a Hellriaser movie. I contend if it was called "Pinhead Presents : Tales Of The Box" or something like that, more horror fans would have given it a chance.
While not as good the same applies for Hellseeker (still haven't seen 7-9)

I actually really liked PA3. The second was okay, but I liked the third much, much better. I'm loving the mythology they built and the last ten or fifteen minutes of 3 were some of the creepiest I've spent in a theater in a while. As far as Cloverfield 2, Matt Reeves keeps saying that they're working on it but they don't want to do it until they've nailed the story.

MagSeven: Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: "The Woman" is a probably the best horror sequel I've ever seen. Though it stands on it's own and there isn't much continuity between it and the first movie, it's objectively the better film.
