It's far too dusty in here. I didn't even know I was allergic.

2012-09-29 09:33:48 PM
words fail

2012-09-29 09:47:55 PM
Already saw that. No way I'm doing it again, yo.

2012-09-29 10:33:44 PM
Well... I'm gutted.

But, it does make think about how we see performers, and how we never really know the people who are performing.

2012-09-30 01:31:07 AM
Wasn't funny. Just sad.

2012-09-30 01:35:09 AM
I don't get it.

Nothing against any of you, and thank you Smitty and the Admin who greenlighted this, but I think that this is a good point to say f*ck Fark for a moment, and all the petty bullsh*t here.

I need to hug my little girl a little tighter right now. My worst fear is exactly that one. It's not dusty in here, it's just very real pain, and the kind that any parent can share. I don't care if we disagree, if I have you on Ignore, or if you piss me off: that man stared into an Abyss that I wouldn't wish on anyone, and I hope to all the Hells or Heavens, that you never have to face what that man faced right there. Melancholy mood starting the night notwithstanding, I'm going to shut this box off, and when I get up tomorrow, my little girl is going to get squoze a lot harder...

my god that was sad

earlier in the story the guy said that therapy was just something that he didn't do.

I sincerely hope he's changed his tune on that - something that traumatic needs to be worked through or else that pain can manifest in all sorts of destructive ways.

Give me a break. He worked on it writing that monologue and he works on it when he delivers that monologue. And I am sure it informs all of his comedic works.

He doesn't need a completely farktarded bullshiat artist to work through it. If you need that, I hope it works for you.

It's been 13 years and he can't talk about it without having a full fledged blubbering meltdown. Whatever he's doing, it's not working for him.

Filmed in 2003, about an incident in 1990 about absolutely heart rending material. It's now 10 years later.

You have no idea of the work he's gone through, you are speaking from ignorance and projecting what may have worked for you onto others.

It's amusing that you think that if he had gone through therapy then he wouldn't have or shouldn't have broken down in that monologue. And by amusing I think scary to think you believe therapy would remove those feelings from a father.

i see things on TV, things on teh 'net. my life as a suburban white boy in a lily white area, i know very little of the black experience & culture. i have become aware there are reasons many black folks shun education and reaching out for counseling. hopefully this will change so black folks may benefit from same. i have no clue how any of this change may come about. good luck to you.

Reminds me of Jamie Foxx's breakdown on Inside the Actors Stuido.

My brain almost seized up when he accidentally said "six minutes."

2012-09-30 06:12:46 AM
It's telling when a story is so engrossing that ten minutes feels like two minutes.

Also, does a parent ever really get over the loss of a child?

One thing I have learned about therapy.

You don't necessarily realize that it was beneficial until many years later. And that it won't work at all unless you find the right person to talk too. Which can be almost as difficult as dealing with whatever events that occurred.

Parents aren't supposed to bury their children. I feel so sorry for him and his family as i have lost a mother in law, and my father to brain cancer. It's so very tragic and the feeling of helplessness is overwhelming. To see the one you love get worse and worse, and nothing you can do...nothing. You can pray, you can beg, you can rage, but in the end, it's not up to you man, it's luck, or karma, or just a rotten roll of the dice of life, and you have to suck it up and move on. You just give all the love and support you can, and hope that they get better, or if they are doomed, they pass quickly without too much suffering.

Dude. You're a comedian. You're supposed to make me laugh, therefore you fail.

Know how I know you're not a parent?

2012-09-30 09:22:43 AM
As a performer and the father of a little girl... this hit me hard.

2012-09-30 09:25:30 AM
Cried....That was so sad...

And yet, the speedbump in the middle of it for my was the therapy line. This is so much part of the problem with black society, the kind of stuff that feeds the racism, you can't go to a therapist because that's what rich white people do...That's nearly as sad as his story.

I thought it was hilarious. A little heavy on the child cancer angle, but the punchline made up for it. "worst of times". Ha!

Yeah, the filter's always been kinda racist in and of itself. nubian-r-d-l-y shows up as nubianrdly, but racist slurs about Asian people, Jewish people and Latinos don't get filtered at all.

/nubanrdly isn't a word

You should be taken out front and tarred&feathered in public. Then you should be tied to a tree and have little children throw things at you their way to school every day. If you don't know how to spell something, write something else. Otherwise you will look twice the moron you actually are.

Secondly, a big "Fark you" to you, subby. That is not a comedian. Comedian may have been his current job title, but that is not what he is doing in that (ancient, btw) video. In that video he is a very sad man with huge mental issues, doing everything but comedy. He is a tragedian, if you will. So I place you in the same category I place submitters who say "smoking hot chick" in articles which turn out to be about women who look like 105 year old death warmed over.. Namely the "asshole" category.

The credits at the end said he was speaking at an organization dedicated to the craft of storytelling. The audience wasn't expecting a comedy set.

He appeared on Carson 3 times, even while his daughter was dying, so that makes him plenty qualified to call himself a comedian.

Devastating.

Parents lose young children every day but most of them don't have to go out and make people laugh while they watch their child fade away. That's an extra brutal twist of the knife that was buried in his guts. I don't blame that man for not being over that 13 years later.

I'd be downright pissed if I went to a comedy festival and this guy got up and told that story. There's a time and place for everything and a comedy festival is not the time and place for this.

So does this oneLink. Another comedian, also the Aspen Comedy festival, also a sad story and another "theme of the night was....". Most telling, is that neither audience boos and heckles them for not being funny.

On Anthony Griffith's website, his bio said he was "Invited to participate in "The Moth" story-telling festival in Aspen, Co. several years ago,"

That was difficult, but not impossible, to masturbate to.

2012-09-30 10:36:27 PM
I went to sleep, and Jim didn't call me when it was my turn to steer. He did that pretty often. When I woke up at daybreak, he was sitting there with his head down between his knees, moaning and crying to himself. I pretended not to notice. I knew what it was all about. He was thinking about his wife and his children back upriver, and he was feeling miserable and homesick. He'd never been away from home before in his life, and I believe he cared just as much about his family as white folks do for theirs. It doesn't seem natural that he would, but I guess it's so. He was often moaning and crying like that at night when he thought I was asleep. He'd say things like, "Poor little 'Lizabeth! Poor little Johnny! It's mighty hard. I expect I won't ever get to see you anymore. Not any more!" He was a good negro, Jim.
