From the radio ads, it looks like the metal envelope tube was a big thing back then, which is weird - the technology was basically gone after WWII, so it really only lasted 10 years or so. Granted that was a good deal longer than the metal/glass composite CRT*, but still....

* Yes such a beast existed in the early 50's. Very light, nice picture (thin faceplate), implosion-proof. But the outer shell was at 15kv and the metal-glass seals tend to not be perfect. Nonetheless there's plenty of functional types out there still...
