$7 per six back of decent beer isn't steep at all. That's not to say I could not find some $7 per six pack beer that wouldn't be enjoyable. But most of the stuff I have bought lately is $8.50 and up. $9 is typical, sadly. 

I brew. So, fortunately, I don't have to buy six packs too often. At around $50 for ingredients per 10 gallons, I'm paying about $0.45 per beer.

Aaaaaaaaand we're done here. I'm paid a little more than double minimum wage, and even by the fail metric in TFA I only get paid about 6 or 7 pints per hour. The average American is not part of the 1%.

I realize you're quoting the article, but I still don't believe it. Especially since there are multiple states where liquor stores can only sell beer >= 6%, which rules out all the bottom dwelling stuff.

Now that I have rtfa, If I buy a six pack of high life (I know, beer snob thread, so it isn't beer) pints for $5, and I do. These numbers work out even better.

American beer has really evolved over the last 20 years, from horsepiss to specialty stores full of craft beer of any kind you can think of. While more expensive, good beer has gotten so damn good. Like West Coast IPA, or Cali-Belgique, I would drink this beer even if it didnt get me drunk. It tastes do damn good. Weve come a long way from Budweiser/Coors/Miller domination.

All you can get around here for a buck 80 would be a 24 oz can of something like King Cobra or Steel Reserve.

Im not a beer snob, but you shouldnt drink 211 or King Cobra.

If I could live off of cheese and beer for the rest of my life I would. Seeing as it's part of my job to know beer and cheese makes this so much more tempting.

Guinness for $35 (bottles)-$42(draught)/case.
Stone IPA for $42/case.
Sam Adams $32/case.
Troegenator $35/case.
Magic Hat for $32/case.

And the beer stores in PA have to jump through ridiculous hoops to get a license, which drives the price up a bit. I can find beers more costly than $43.20/case (Arrogant Bastard is $51), but it takes work.

So do other states just have ridiculously high prices, or are you guys buying your beers by the sixpack?

Having spent the afternoon at the Karbach brewery, I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

/Just back from Amsterdam, where the hundreds of true Belgians put ours to shame.

Though many around the world would beg to differ, the U.S. is among the world's best places to be a beer drinker from a quality standpoint, at least since the craft beer revolution. It's not that hard to find a bar that serves at least one or two local microbrews in many parts of America. Plus many small towns boast a brewpub. To think we've come so far in 30 years, from the prevalence of macrobrews and generic/store-brand swill passed off as beer to the widespread availability of Sam Adams (now pretty much a macrobrew), Great Lakes, Goose Island, Sierra Nevada and Red Hook... to name but a few.

You forgot to account for converting pints to half-liters (16.9 oz) to 12 oz bottles. The math works out almost exactly, at $31, but that just proves your point even more. I loved the 500 ml cans of good beer for only a Euro or so all over Amsterdam, though.

/Sam Adams is only $22-28/case here though, depending on sales. Natty Light is $15 for a 30-pack.
