I'm gonna say it, some aren't gonna like it, but it's true. Michael O"Hare's acting in the first season of B5 was terrible. I was so glad when he went away after the first season and got replaced by Boxleitner. Even when he came back to finish up the character he was still off.

This doesn't mean I don't feel sad about it. But it's true.

I don't feel that's really fair considering the writing of the first season. G'Kar and Londo were only able to make some of their dialogue bearable through sheer force of will.

Disagree. Michael O'Hare made an awesome station commander in spite of the poorer writing of season 1.

And while I like Boxleitner in B5 as well as in general, the utter lack of chemistry between him and Mira Furlan made it very difficult to sit through a whole bunch of his material for the four seasons he was on it.

B5 was one of my favorite shows of the 90s. I've rewatched all the episodes more than I can even count. And O'Hare's performance has always come across to me as stiff and wooden and I've always disliked watching him act on that show.

Granted, most of the first season episodes were pretty bad, with the exception of most of the lore set up episodes.

He was more of a stage actor than a television actor and it showed.

I always thought Sinclair was part of the problem with the first season. Sheridan seemed to be a much more complex, nuanced character whereas first season Sinclair was just "generic space station captain guy"

/Even when his history was fleshed out, he seemed to always be defined by the role he was playing (fighter pilot, religious leader etc) as opposed to being an actual person playing those roles.

2012-09-29 05:11:10 PM
Maybe I read too much into the first season, knowing that much of what I was watching was going to be foreshadowing for the whole 5-year arc planned for the series; but I liked the way O'Hare played the character of Sinclair.

Here's a guy whose shining moment was managing to survive a suicide mission against an unrelenting and nearly unstoppable alien force. Only to wake up the next day to find the war over, the aliens sued for peace, being the only known survivor of the Battle of the Line, and having no memory whatsoever of how that happened. Then being put out to pasture as Commander of some out of the way space outpost, and finding out on the first official day of your assignment that the war might not be as "over" as some people think, and he might be part of the reason why...

The character in that role would either have to be played with some measure of equanimity to events surrounding him, or being running thru the station like a madman screaming "WTF!" at least once an episode. I preferred his playing straight man to the rest of the madcap antics that the rest of the series seemed to offer.

I wish that I could say that I was surprised, but when JMS posted that APB a while back enlisting the world's help in locating Mr. O'Hare you kind of got the impression that something wasn't right behind those eyebrows.

Sure it was a heart attack, but were there extenuating circumstances?

Still, it gets increasingly poignant with the passings of the actors.

My favorite B5 blooper is when Boxleitner accidentally calls himself Sinclair, rather than Sherridan, and the entire set dies of laughter.

B5 is still one of my favorite shows of all time, and I liked O'Hare as Sinclair. His back and forth banter with Garibaldi was always great.

I always liked his character, but I'd heard the main reason for his departure after one season was some poor off-screen chemistry with some of the other actors, particularly Claudia Christian. Pity that.

Some fans complainted that Captain Sheridan smilled too much, early on. Then the show took away reasons to smile for him.

Babylon wha?

You know, that show that DS9 stole its plot from. A season behind and a the writing wasn't as good.

Also, Sinclair's greatest quote:

"No. We have to stay here. And there's a simple reason why. Ask ten different scientists about the environment, population control, genetics, and you'll get ten different answers, but there's one thing every scientist on the planet agrees on. Whether it happens in a hundred years or a thousand years or a million years, eventually our Sun will grow cold and go out. When that happens, it won't just take us. It'll take Marilyn Monroe, and Lao-Tzu, and Einstein, and Morobuto, and Buddy Holly, and Aristophanes, and - all of this - all of this - was for nothing. Unless we go to the stars. "

I know, I know.... nothing's obscure on Fark. But I have to admit I figured Scarecrow & Mrs. King might've been a dated/relatively unknown reference for the majority of Fark's population.
(I have vague memories of the show.)

I was there at the dawn of the Third Age of Mankind. I was on GEnie, a pre-Internet (well, pre-popular WWW, anyway) text-based online service. GEnie had main subject areas called ‶RoundTables′&prime (RTs). Each RT had a real-time chat area, a Library for sharing files, and what we would today call a forum. That had Categories (CATs) which were divided into Topics (TOPs).

Page 470 was the original Science Fiction and Fantasy RoundTable, aka SFRT. Numerous SF writers of the time, as well as their fans, congregated there. JMS was one of them. Peter David, who would go on to write two memorable episodes, was another.

When I first signed up, the SFRT's CATegory 6 was the Comics and Animation Category, but it later split off into its own RT, the Comics and Animation RoundTable (CRT). I was an Assistant Sysop there, in charge of chats. I used the same nickname there as my handle here, and even used it before my GEnie days on QuantumLink (as a member of the COMAL User's Group there).

There were at least three CATegories devoted to Star Trek, and one, CATegory 18, to ‶Non-Trek SF TV series′&prime. TOPic 22 therein was originally called ‶That Which Cannot Be Named.′&prime JMS posted in there about this series he was working on that he could not reveal the name of just yet. The hints he dropped were tantalizing indeed, as were the goals he had in mind for a five-year novel for television, serious SF, no cute robots, etc.

Later, of course, he revealed the name, and TOPic 22 was renamed to match: ‶Babylon 5.′′

At one point, it looked like B5 was never going to air. I still don′t know the full details, but JMS posted that something was happening with network executives that threatened to kibosh the whole thing. He asked if we'd be willing to write letters in support of a TV series we had never seen. Of course we agreed, but it turned out not to be necessary. Still, though, he was moved by our support, and asked if there was some way he could thank the GEnie SFRT community.

I posted suggesting that he establish in the series ‶bible′′ that the 3D spatial coordinates of the station would be 470/18/22 (for the SFRT Page #, CATegory #, and TOPic #). He readily agreed, and added his own touch as well: 𠄶Grid Epsilon′′ (for G.E., the parent company of GEnie). This is why on the series you would hear of coordinates in 𠄶Grid Epsilon.′′ Subsequently, we SFRT fans of B5 referred to ouselves as 𠄶Grid Epsilon Irregulars.′′

IIRC, he wasn′t the only known survivor of the Battle of the Line. He was the only survivor of his particular squadron therein. The Minbari more than decimated the Earth forces there, but upon analyzing Sheridan with the Triluminary, they stopped the slaughter.
