MHudson: How weird is it I pop on GOG right after seeing this and Carmageddon is plastered on the front?

Why wouldn't they? It's one of the few times the general public will ever remember the game, their search ranking must be skyrocketing right now.

MarkEC: I wonder what the cost difference is in bridges replaced in 53 hours vs. bridges in PA that take months.
A small 2 lane bridge over a 10 foot wide creek near me took almost a year to complete. It's a nice little bridge, and will probably last for 200 years.

In this situation, the bridge is already built, it's just installed in 53 hours, beginning with the demolition. Even that's pushing it and will require 24/7 work, because of how huge the bridges and the road under them are. By the time the bridges are near their projected lifespan, which is 80 years IIRC thanks to modern bridge technology, they'll probably have been replaced anyway thanks to LA's exponential growth. 200 year bridges only survive that long when they've been bypassed and basically abandoned, so there's not much point in overengineering them so much.

My guess is that Carmageddon II will fizzle just like the last one, because despite the popular perception, people aren't stupid and don't willingly subject themselves to 6 hour traffic delays just to get to the grocery store. That's reserved for making barely enough to survive in a soul-crushing paper pusher job in Santa Ana or Costa Mesa.

I know that not everyone can do it, but having a motorcycle in Los Angeles changes everything. Lane splitting is completely legal, you have your own freeway more or less. Pole position on every light. I couldn't live here driving a cage.

Markoff_Cheney: lords of the realm and masters of magic ftw.

Oh man, Master of Magic. I know everyone else went nuts over Master of Orion or Civilization, but despite the bugs MoM had just the right combination of tactics and fantasy to enthrall young me.

Plus you could save scum the fark out of it. I'm pretty certain that's the only way to beat it, after endless failed campains attempting to be good....

/DosBox and now VirtualBox have been some of my best friends for years.

This is one of the lan games I remember playing at a friends house back in high school. I found a dosbox build of it on the net sometime back, I may need to install it again.

Both excellent games. C2 was awesome

Yes, but Carmageddon was the best IMO.

So far, so good...I can see the 101 and 405 freeways from my living room window, and both have light traffic right now.

Brick-House: LA... isn't it always this this???

Close2TheEdge: Still wish somebody would remake this on a new engine with state of the art graphics. Awesome game.

Isn't that Vigilante 8? I'm pretty sure there have been sequels and remakes as recently as last year, on various systems-- Usually in the "Arcade" or "Indie" section of the console's store, instead of as a mainstream title.

Have you seen L.A. Story? When Steve Martin gets into his car to drive one door down?

That.

It's too hot, with the sun beaming down, in the SFV.

I like the loading out your vehicle and having missions with objectives (kind of like mech warrior with cars) style better than the arcade style pick a pre made car and your mission is just to blow up all other cars.

I played the Freeway game for (too) many years. Lived in the South Bay (5 years) and in South OC (10 years) with a three year break in between (Tokyo...talk about traffic...). Now, this is what my "freeway" looks like:

Don't miss SoCal nor its traffic.

The original and Splat Pack expansion are available as a "Max Pack" for $10 on GreatOldGames (gog.com)

I just got them with my Kickstarter voucher for supporting Reincarnation.

The game in Close2TheEdge's post is Interstate 76, which is exactly like Vigilante 8. Interstate 76 is available for download and I love playing it.

Just yesterday I was reading that last summer when they first closed off the section of the 405 freeway, air quality improved temporarily in the surrounding parts of LA due to the reduced amount of cars on the road. They really do need to have something like this more often - not necessarily a freeway closure, but a huge incentive for people to not drive for the weekend.

No. Notice that traffic is freely flowing on the left half of the freeway? Typically, that half of the freeway would be jammed packed, too.

We actually walk in our neighborhood...

Of course, it's because THERE'S NOWHERE TO PARK! Parking, at least in our 'hood, is more nerve-wracking than driving.

foxyshadis: In this situation, the bridge is already built, it's just installed in 53 hours, beginning with the demolition.

Um, no. The 53 hours is only for the demolition of the remaining half of the bridge. It has nothing to do with the "installation". The first half was removed over the weekend during the first Carmageddon in July of last year. Completing the construction of the bridge will not require the complete freeway closure that the demolition has, and will be done in the months to come.

I loved that game so much! Had the "Spice Girls" pedestrian hack at some point, too, which was a bonus. That and Fear Factory's Demanufacture being the soundtrack made this one of the best games of all time.

For every Carmageddon there are several Interstate 76s that miss the cultural mark.

Earlier this year ,They did 1 side of the bridge(west to east??) in 53 hours.
Anyway, I watched the KTLA news that next monday, and the ignorant newscaster
reported 'how AMAZING it was that they finished both bridges in 53 hours'.

It was last July. They demolished just the south side of the bridge, and installed the new section later that year. They reopened the freeway 15 hours ahead of schedule, so that would be a total of 38. The contractor had arranged for a nice fat bonus for finishing ahead of schedule, too... not so amazing IMHO.

Roook: I loved that game. The car physics were awesome and the recording function made it so much fun. I watched my car get flattened and dragged around the race course multiple times.

Also the little touches, like breaking into the stadium and running over the entire football team and cheerleaders. Or the zoo and running over the penguins (who'd cover their eyes before you smashed into them).

And the final level sent you to hell. The entire track had you driving up and down a giant Satan who was at a computer desk playing Carmageddon, ignoring the car-nage going on his shoulders and around his mousepad (lol get it car-nage soo funny)

The only reason I spent so much money on a dual voodoo2 SLI was for Carmageddon. It's coming back! They had a Kickstarter to raise money after they got the rights to the game back. They'll still take PayPal cash too which will get you a copy of the game or other crap when it's done.

Too funny they had to release the game in zombie versions in Germany and other countries that banned simulated human carnage.

Once the mission limit was patched out. But the maps weren't as wide open and large on C2. Plus the maps were recycled on later rounds. C1 was pretty decent to look at for the era with the voodoo2 patches. Just fun to mangle the car even if it's not real world physics.
