I loved that game. The car physics were awesome and the recording function made it so much fun. I watched my car get flattened and dragged around the race course multiple times.

Also the little touches, like breaking into the stadium and running over the entire football team and cheerleaders. Or the zoo and running over the penguins (who'd cover their eyes before you smashed into them).

And the final level sent you to hell. The entire track had you driving up and down a giant Satan who was at a computer desk playing Carmageddon, ignoring the car-nage going on his shoulders and around his mousepad (lol get it car-nage soo funny)

Um... I played Carmageddon a LOT and the car physics were laughable, and none of the levels had courses, they were all open world.

The SAD thing is, I played 75-80% the way through the game, OCD-like hitting every single level, without realizing that:

Levels can be ended by destroying competitors, you don't have to clear the level of pedestrians.
You don't have to go back to your Garage after the level is ended to repair.

I made a point to not repair in-level, though. That made the game absolutely boring.

/Hevy Impaler was best car
/so was the APC if you could get it. Blow up the police cars with one hit.

Should have kept that game when I had it. I didn't realize the first game needed all MS-DOS drivers to run (I was new at computers) so I played the game exactly once. Then because I couldn't figure out why the game kept freezing up my computer, I tossed it.

But I loved running the cows over.

God I loved that game.

I remember the driver typically wore a gleeful maniacal grin which, more often than not, mirrored my own expression while playing it.

If this actually sees the light of day and lives up to one tenth of the fun of its predecessor, I will be a happy happy man.

Mister Peejay: Um... I played Carmageddon a LOT and the car physics were laughable,

What I mean to say is the deforming of the cars. Not how they drove. But how if someone rammed you from the side you'd have a big old dent in the side of your car, or if you flew through the air and landed on your roof, it'd be dented in. Not a common thing on car games back then.

Replaying races with the 'pedestrian kill cam' was my favorite. It'd just focus on a pedestrian walking along and then your car would zoom through them, causing them to explode. Then it'd focus on the next group of pedestrians until your car came along and wasted them.

I heard in the european versions they had to change the blood color to black for robot oil, or green for zombie blood.

This time, the contractor faces a penalty if the work isn't done in 53 hours.

"The penalty is $6,000 per lane of freeway, per 10 minutes. Let's assume the entire freeway isn't reopened, that's $60,000 every 10 minutes," Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Dave Sotero told KCBS-TV.

Exactly how much is he getting paid in order to even agree to a penalty like that?

The guy who built the Hoover Dam had, for back then, a healthy bonus clause if he finished early and he did. In today's dollars, he pocketed several million -- but he treated his depression era workers like shiat, managed to get a bunch killed, there were no safety regulations and he had them living in tents in the dessert heat while he postponed building their promised camp for as long as possible.

(Today, he's lauded as a hero.)

I wonder if the contractor for this job has an early completion bonus? If so, it must be pretty big for him to even take the job with such a penalty clause.

I don't think I'd like to be on that work crew.

The closure is part of a $1 billion project.

The US 3 widening in Massachusetts had a penalty of about $20,000 per day for late completion, to a maximum of a few million. The contractor was a year or three late. Total penalty was about 1% of contract value.

The penalty is big so they get done on time. Since it's California; I'm betting that the contract is in the tens if not hundred millions of dollars. This isn't work that just any contracter can do; a 53 hour deadline is so tight that any but the biggest companies couldn't get it done.

/ there's only a dozen construction companies that could do the work in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if there was only a single bidder for the contract.

both of those were great. Driving the vehicles around in Borderlands reminds me of them. I had so much fun playing Vigilante 8 with my roommate on split screen. They do have a version of it on Xbox Live Arcade if I remember correctly with updated graphics and multiplayer. Not sure if anyone plays it though.

I wasn't all that big on Vigilante 8 (twisted metal was better as far as arcade style car combat games go) but I LOVED interstate '76, played it till I wore out the disc.

Where Interstate '76 was on the mech warrior 2 game engine I always wanted to find a hacked version where you could battle mechs in cars .

I wonder what the cost difference is in bridges replaced in 53 hours vs. bridges in PA that take months.
A small 2 lane bridge over a 10 foot wide creek near me took almost a year to complete. It's a nice little bridge, and will probably last for 200 years.
