I don't see a lot of white knighting.

I'm just honest enough to admit Olivia and Zooey's personal opinions about Skyrim don't mean jack shiat to me and I'd still like to screw both of them.

Mean Girls are obviously shallow, and they own it. And that's okay.

Let me see if I can sum up subby's ennui:

Some of us see a phony and just know they're being false, and we are insulted that said phony even attempted to deceive us.

Zooey is one such phony. Her public image is the geeky, quirky, just-like-you, girl-next-door. The reality is that she's a millionaire who is married to a rock star, that she attends parties you nerds would never even be invited to, and that she spends far more time with her publicist, personal trainer, makeup artists, photographers for fashion magazines, and other Hollywood types than she does playing video games or memorizing Star Trek trivia... Yet she pretends that it's the opposite, and that she's not really a rich, famous celebrity who can bathe in champagne, shoot a Maybeline advertisement, and then attend a Hollywood party or awards ceremony and hang out with A-listers.

She's no different than Angelina Jolie or Gwyneth Paltrow, except that she LIES about what she really is because it keeps her target audience interested, even if they're just choosing to buy into the fantasy.

In short, Zooey Dechanel is like Professional Wrestling: She's fake, we all know it, and some of you are bawling "It's still real to me, dammit!"

Olivia Munn, on the other hand, is a wannabe actress that outright faked being someone else on camera as a stepping stone in her career, and then essentially abandoned the lie (or at least put less effort into it) when she got what she wanted. Nerds hate that, because it's not unlike the preppy girl at school pretending to like them and want to play D&D, and then walking away with her preppy friends, laughing at what a nerd he is.

Mostly, though, nerd guys hate when a hot girl pretends to be a geek because it's what's currently "in fashion" and it's pre-packaged and sold at the mall. They earned their nerdhood the hard way-- Through wedgies, insults, and poor fashion sense-- and they'll be DAMNED if some girl who would otherwise be a popular, beautiful prep is going to be allowed to come along and just buy nerd clothes off the rack, claim to like one or two nerdy things, and then gather all the benefits of nerddom.

I went through the same thing with goth. I was goth in the 80s. In the 90s, I was pissed off because Hot Topic and Marilyn Manson made goth popular, and people who wouldn't have wanted to talk to me back when I was post-punk in the 80s were now proclaiming themselves to be part of my former clique, with none of the subculture background that went into it.

In short: Buying your clique and personality in the mall pisses off people who actually have their own, actual personality, for some reason.

When you boil it down to basics, Zooey is a hot, popular, preppy girl who wears geek clothing. She bugs the nerds because they smell the falsehood on her.

drewogatory: Ivandrago: drewogatory: Are you being rhetorical or do you really want to know why there are no lenses in her glasses?

It can't be reflection, surely? There must be coatings for that. Anyone who chooses to wear glasses is a moron. The day I got my first set of contacts was farking awesome (well, after the 2 hours of not being able to get them in, that is).

Wow do you suck. I hated wearing contacts. The got laser surgery because I was in the Army and it was free and made my job easier. I wish I still needed to wear glass and I actively look forward to wearing glasses again.

Maybe your eyesight wasn't as bad as mine, but I was a pretty active kid that spent hours in the water everyday, so only being able to see 10 feet all summer pretty much sucked. Not to mention trying to play football in those bastards. This was the 70's and 80's and lenses in my scrip were about a half inch thick and shatterproof lenses and lightweight frames were a pipe dream.

Dude, don't project your childhood trauma or whatever the hell it was on the rest of us who wear glasses. Some of us can't wear contacts or get lasik surgery, so we have to wear them. In my case, I have only peripheral vision in my left eye, so the glasses are necessary to keep my corrected vision "normal". I've been wearing them since I was 2.5 years old(I'm 60 now), and while I have had my share of problems with them over the years, not once have I biatched and moaned like some kid who just got pantsed in the hallway at school.

Holy shiat, do I have to add IMO in every damn sentence around here? It's freaking implied. Just because I state an opinion doesn't mean I think it's a goddamn absolute (or that you aren't free to disagree). And I see no reason to qualify every statement because some people think you need to be fair and balanced while talking shiat on the internet.

They skullf*cked all meaning out of "hipster" so they're back to pissing and moaning about hot nerdy girls being no true scotstits. The level of incredulity at the thought of an attractive woman with brains, personality, and humor makes one think the 80s and 90s never happened.

She is much better looking when she is dressed normally and not playing the ironic/geek girl part, which is obviously her schtick and makes her money, so you cannot blame her for that. She is like the pretty girl next door. Which is not a bad thing.

I think that most of her photoshoots are ruined by her photographers making her do that deer in headlights pose.

When she is normal she is much better looking. Though her sister is way hotter.

As an actual nerd, I'm going to have to dispute this theory about what nerds hate. This is what sexually frustrated shut-ins hate, and only on the internet. Real nerds won back in the 80s, and they know it. The nerds you are referring to are the empty headed fakers, as they obviously lack the intelligence and self awareness to realize the irony in angrily devolving at the idea that their wild fantasies have been less than straightforward with them, all the while claiming ownership of nerdiness.

Guess what? Most actresses are more concerned about being liked by someone, anyone than they are about being sincere.

Olivia Munn found that through Attack of the Show by pretending to be a hot geek girl who's easy to get into bed. Most people pegged her as a phony from the start, but some guys actually bought into the fantasy, and they started to feel betrayed when they realized they'd been suckered.

(There are such things as hot girls who love technology and who play video games as a pastime, but Munn ain't one of them. I've always felt like Veronica Belmont is the real deal, but she also isn't trying to get on the A-list with her antics.)

Zooey Deschanel opted to go the route of being the cute-but-awkward girl -- a sort of toned-down Katy Perry. It's worked for her, but it doesn't excuse the fact that she's a terrible actress who merely has a likable personality. Again, most people realized this from the start, but a few people have apparently missed the cues and think she's supposed to be something more than she is.

Speaking of which, I feel sorry for anyone who follows The New Girl as anything more than a guilty pleasure. Fans of that show must be better at feeling cognitive dissonance than I am, because I can't get over how sloppy and stupid it is.

In a real, true, nutshell? Because there have been far too many self and corporately promoted 'nerd goddesses' in the past 5-10 years, and nerds are starting to get jaded and reallize that every cute girl who can read copy probably isn't, in fact, a nerd.

It's marketing overload and typical nerd backlash. Imagine going to strip clubs, and thinking 'man, these girls are REALLY into me' and going back a lot and having fun, and getting attached and mentally/emotionally invested.

Then realizing there are 400,000 strip joints in your town.

I like Zooey, even though she seems to be from the "Michael Cera School of Acting" (Be yourself, keep channeling yourself, keep that one really cute clueless expression on your face at all times). She is great in "Eulogy", which I highly recommend if you haven't seen it- great cast! Hank Azaria, Rip Torn, Kelly Lynch, Famke Janssen, Ray Romano, Piper Laurie, Debra Winger, etc. REALLY funny black comedy (not the Tyler Perry kind). The "Viking" funeral at the end is unbelievably funny, also "Vag in a Town"...

She was pretty terrible in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy though, and ever since she married Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard he is writing HAPPY (!) songs and not being his normal emo, heartbroken, isolated self.

I always wondered why so many Farkers despised Olivia Munn. I think she is fantastic in "The Newsroom", but now I can understand all the butthurt rage a little more.
