(Diffuser)   Coachella is so desperate for a Smiths reunion they're offering to make the whole festival a vegetarian paradise because meat, you see, is murder as far as Morrissey is concerned   (diffuser.fm) divider line 53

I don't understand the hate for vegetarians around here. Must be all of that dormant testosterone. Not all veggies are judgmental jerks but apparently a lot of omnivores are.

forgotmydamnusername: Eh? They were more bland, popish-sounding stuff in a mass of it. It doesn't sound anything like the Byrds or something like that.

I recognize that as English, but I have no idea what the hell you're on about.

There was a guy playing guitar in Culture Club, too

Well consider *me* told then!

At least their front-man wasn't closeted, nor quite so aggressively self-righteous.

No, he was a silly drag queen who pined for the mostly straight drummer he'd had an affair with (and who wasn't interested in getting back together) before becoming a heroin addict train-wreck who nodded out on stage and in interviews and hasn't been popular or relevant for close to 25 years now. Win for Boy George!

If the punk rock of the period was too macho and stupid for you

I was/am a huge fan of The Clash, Pistols from earlier, The Dead Kennedys, Bad Religion, a bunch of stuff on the SST label contemporaneous with The Smiths. So, another easily refuted non-point from you, you're doing well.

Oingo Boingo

Loved 'em, saw them a bunch of times (easy when you live in Los Angeles), even saw them once in the Mystic Knights days. We Close Our Eyes is one of my favorite songs.

PIL

Love the first two albums, the rest, not so much apart from a few singles.

The Replacements

[Fat,] Drunk and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

Violent Femmes

Love the first album, after that, meh.

R.E.M.

Was in to them from the minute I heard Radio Free Europe on KROQ, one of my very favorite bands if I can ignore the post Bill Berry stuff.

all sorts of stuff that struck me as either more interesting or at least less horrible to listen to.

All that stuff you mentioned was common, mainstream "underground" or "college radio" stuff that any record buying nerd in to rock music knew about, not some great polar opposite to The Smiths like Crass.

Plus, total fail for not mentioning Hüsker Dü.
