(Big 1059)   It is not a violation for a corrections officer to "friend" an inmate on Facebook. "Poking" still unacceptable   (big1059.com) divider line 24

So the inmates are using Facebook? I would think that would violate cruel and unusual punishment. Or perhaps it's a scared straight sort of scenario.

They probably have a better connection than I do.

Hell, that's even more reason to just commit a crime and get thrown in jail. Not only do you get 3 squares and a cot, you get to screw around on Facebook. I wonder if they trade cigs for Farmville crops now.

INMATES DO NOT HAVE INTERNET ACCESS

It would be a damned disaster.
In California, they aren't even allowed to send notes to other parts of the prison.
Regular incoming, and outgoing mail is even reviewed, for fear that they are running criminal enterprises, and in some cases, even ordering hits, from behind bars.

Are you so daffy you think they're issued a laptop along with their blankets, and towels?

If you've read Fark at all these past few months, patrolling Facebook is how they solve a lot of their crimes.

A better article than that one made the point that there are many, many people on probation or parole that corrections officers are also not supposed to buddy up with, but since there's no way for them to know if a high school friend or acquaintance has been in prison solely based on facebook, "friending" them there doesn't count.

Some inmates do have access to Facebook. And someone else does post for them , not sure how that works in detail though. Guessing that they write it out on paper and it has to approved first but that may be too obvious.
I somehow had an inmate in Walla Walla as a FB friend for awhile. What I saw for posts was always brief even for FB, Things like asking for people to write letters to him.

Would you feel really uncomfortable turning down a Farmville request from an inmate serving short time?

My mother was a tlephone operator for years, and would connect collet calls from 'Jeffrey', as in Jeffrey Dahmer. No one ever refused to accept the charges.

Maybe this similar. Hell if Charles Manson wants to send me a friend request, well I don't want to piss him off.

Huh, either I'm more tired than I thought, or the two beers were stronger than I thought.

Hell I'll just blame my mobile keyboard and hope you all forgive me.

You would think that, but you would be wrong.

I get regular calls from my brother-in-law who is serving an 8 year term in the Arizona prison system. He told me I didn't want to know how the phone got into his hands. If he can spend 10 minutes talking to his sister and niece/nephew, he can probably manage a Facebook page too.

How many correction officers does it take to throw an inmate down a flight of stairs?

None, he fell.

/I actually got to tell that one to a corrections officer.

They could just check the public database.

Corrections Officers presumably have access to comprehensive databases like NCIC as well.

Next week: Facebook cross-references all users with NCIC, prison, and sex offender registries, tags everyone accordingly.
