markfara: daxxenos: CapeFearCadaver: vpb: The story actually said "rural whites" so you could see how someone might believe it.

Someone put it on facebook the other day... the amount of people who replied thinking it was real was unreal. Does no one look at source addresses?

Liberals don't read the details. All those words makes their brains hurt, and besides, they only read what they have been told to read. Anything else is "right wing propaganda" that might make them think, and we are back to their heads hurting. It's why they like Islam. The Imam tells them what to believe, and what to hate, in the name of love, and they can shut down the forebrain and go back to humping little boys.

Project much?

I think that was the joke...

The Onion is prophetic: From the original Onion article:

For more on this story: Please visit our Iranian subsidiary organization, Fars.

I've got to say that was the coolest part of the whole story.

My Iranian coworker saw the Fars logo and asked what was going on, so I had to explain The Onion.

Given the opportunity to shoot either Obama or Ahmadinejad, 92% of PFJ (Psychopaths for Jesus) members indicated that they would shoot Ahmadinejad.

Most common reason cited: business before pleasure

Yet, sadly, not even one Republican candidate...

daxxenos: limeyfellow: If the Onion is good enough the GOP to make attacks against Obama, than its good enough for Fars damnit!

Onion is the only non-conservative site to DARE question Dear Leader's policies. ABCNBCCBSCNNMSNBC enjoy the taste of Obama man juice too much to offer ANY criticism.

You are a dick. The MSM critisizes Obama a lot....you simply refuse to acknowledge the truth.

xxmedium: Does satire just not translate well into other languages? Why does this keep happening?

In cultures with state run/censored media, it's often due to freedom of speech being an alien concept. Instead of "If they print it, it must be true" they think "If they print it, it must be state sanctioned". That's why other countries can get so pissed at us for what Billy Graham or some random YouTube poster preaches. They assume that these people speak for the U.S. government and by extension all it's citizens.

Further, the reaction of the fooled news agencies will probably not be embarrassment, but anger at the U.S. government for allowing the Onion to fool them.

And really, it's understandable these people think this way. It's not like their governments are going to extol the virtues of free speech.

Am I the only one that thinks Ahmadinejad isn't a bad leader?

His stance on Israel may be a little extreme(or maybe not brig that he is threatened by them constantly), but he generally speaks clearly about his nation's ambitions. He's been coming to New York giving speeches for years now and doesn't really hide a whole lot. Really, Iran's stance on Isreal (defense) looks a lot better for the peace process than America's (defend a nation of crazies at all costs). Even when the guy says crazy shiat, he has a smirk on his face that lets people in on it.
Hell, I'd like to have a beer with the guy. I think Obama's pretty cool too though.

Kit Fister: Diogenes: Quoting The Onion word-for-word, Fars states that an opinion poll also found 77% would rather go to a baseball game or have a drink with Mr Ahmadinejad.

I think it really depends on what we're doing. Basketball and a beer? Definitely Obama. Pushing Israel into the sea? Gotta go with Ahmadinejad.

Not a fan of Israel?

Well...
Israel does need a good cockpunch.

Ladies and gentlemen, I do believe this man could write for The Onion.

lousyskater: In all honesty, it's getting harder and harder to tell the difference between The Onion and reality.

There wasn't enough irony in the article and it was confusing; was the point that Obama and Ahmadinejad so so dissimilar that everyone would get it and think it was funny, or was the punchline that the article implied the POTUS was a fair competitor with a second world country president like Ahmadinejad? Oh, I see your point.

A lot of the world doesn't seem to have much of a problem with Iran. If they didn't sell oil to China, would we?

It's got more to do with intelligence than translation skills. The Mecklenburg County Republicans made the same mistake a while back.

Google "Mecklenburg County Republicans Onion".

That is some funny sh*t, right there; they're also the ones that got slapped by the VA GOP for posting Facebook pics of Obama as an African witch doctor and the like. Stay classy, Southern Virginia Republicans!

Confirmation bias fed by our addiction to righteous outrage.

As a culture, it is now okay to spew vitriolic rage against socially accepted targets, while following up with action is neither expected nor necessarily desired. Thanks to the Internet, you are guaranteed to be able to find a subculture where your definition of evil is the norm. Rants are encouraged, the echo chamber reinforces one's world view, and endorphins are released.

People being people, they take shortcuts to gratification, like skipping reading anything more than the headline, or eliminating the requirement for facts because if this particular news story is not accurate, we know this sort of thing happens all the time so it's okay to rail against the straw man. People across the political spectrum fall into this trap. It's not that they aren't smart, they are just rage junkies. Whether you think that's a physiological shortcoming or a character flaw is up to you.

The interesting thing about good satire is that it has the potential to be believable. Although I think 77% of crackas would rather vote for a Christian fundie first, like, maybe, Haggard, if he weren't gay...
