It's pure ignorance, too. It's not just political.

It makes damned good sense to understand the people you're working with and on behalf of. I would hope we do outreach to the Afghans to help them understand us to. But you put the "sensitivity" and dumbasses start thinking political correctness and feelings and emotions and weakness. It's not about value judgements. It's not about making soldiers OK with some of the cultural traits they might not like. It's about awareness. If you understand the culture (note I didn't say "accept") then you might have a more productive - and more importantly SAFE - working relationship. And it might help you understand and better deal with the Afghans that we're fighting against, too. It's about effectiveness and safety.

And this ignorant piece of shiat doesn't get that. It's people like her who put us in danger in the first place.

I'm an American citizen born in Texas and I'm fairly certain I could enter Afghanistan within the week if I really wanted to. It's not like they have border security.

I don't see why it needs to be from orbit. We could send a conventional missile strike, or maybe even have a nuke-strapped terrorist donkey do it for us. The point is, there are options, and the whole "from orbit" angle just adds needless risk.

While that is true for statewide offices, the person mentioned in the article does not hold a statewide office. The person I originally responded does not seem to understand the difference between state and national office, nor do they seem to understand what districts are. In addition to the state representatives already mentioned by ATRDCI, 9 of the 32 current US house districts for Texas are represented by democrats.

Of course, the ratio of Democrats to Republicans in the state legislature at the moment has little to do with how Texan demographics are shifting, so that whole argument is a red herring.

When I lived in Texas, I lived in a Democratic district lovingly carved out by gerrymandering craftsmen (mostly so that my vote wouldn't endanger any sitting Republicans). I can't think of any recent local elections in which the Republican candidate received more than 10% of the vote.

During the last competitive Houston mayoral election, the Republican finished fourth.

Picking out idiot politicians, like the one in TFA, is easy, but they aren't the only ones around.

/Then again, I left America's Texas for Canada's Texas, so maybe I'm biased.
