MeanJean: If you girls weren't young, thin, and conventially attractive, this would be a hell of a lot more socially transgressive.

You really want to shake people up? Have old, fat chicks run around topless. Or better yet, mastectomy patients. Or hairy women.

What would that accomplish, do you think, as far as furthering the messages of their protests? I'd argue, nothing.
They're not protesting the fashion model agency, or the media's portrayal of women. They protest things like sex tourism, international marriage agencies, the highly exploitative pornography industry in the Ukraine, or religious practices that are particularly harmful to women. They try to bring to people's attention which countries practice these things, or those who support them.

True, but naked fat, old women would get the same level of press, I think, even it is mainly due to shock value. Also, showing women that society views as unattractive can also send the message about the same male sexual entitlement that is causing most of those problems in the first place. By flaunting a body that people find unnattractive, its saying that our bodies aren't for just male viewing pleasure, they belong to US. Period. And fark the pressures of sexist society that tells us our bodies are purely for male use.

/so glad somebody is having an intelligent conversation with me.

I mean, I see your point, but... honestly I think that requires the onlooker to make an analytical assessment of the symbolism, and virtually none of them actually will. It isn't immediately obvious enough for them to make the intellectual connection and, even more importantly, their emotional reaction towards the scene is not immediately or viscerally related to the message being sent. Fat chicks doesn't make people think of sex tourism, and they aren't the sort that people imagine being victims of sexual exploitation.

In something like a feminist or gay pride rally the purpose of the event is already understood to embody messages like "accept us as we are", or rejection of the "perfect" woman images in media, and so the connection is easy to make without even intellectualizing it.

Haha thanks, happy to oblige :)
It happens sometimes, even on Fark.
