stoli n coke: KrispyKritter: usa should get their mexican tomatoes for free. we have millions of illegal immigrants to trade. And who would pick them, genius?Your logic is like saying "I would like to trade you for your tank. I will give you this guy who drives a tank."
kwirlkarphys: My friends, the end is nigh - cash out your lettuce futures, the BLT is under attack.
1000 Ways to Dye: Fark Florida. They shouldn't be growing tomatoes anyways. Totally the wrong climate.
Terrified Asexual Forcemeat: [www.hammertonail.com image 400x226]Tomatoes. Excuse me? Tomatoes. Yes tomatoes.
brantgoose: Terrified Asexual Forcemeat: [www.hammertonail.com image 400x226]Tomatoes. Excuse me? Tomatoes. Yes tomatoes.Yes, we have no tomatoes. We have no tomatoes today ... or any day.The crap in the cans behind me is mostly starch and water. There's barely any tomato in them and you'll get the diabetus if you are so poor you have to live on this crap. I recommend finding real tomatoes, preferably grown locally and ripened naturally, and squash them through a strainer or collander and boil the Hell out of them for a moment, reducing to a simmer for several hours if you have the time. Then add whole or skimmed milk and make a real tomato soup. It will taste weird, being composed of tomatoes and milk rather than sugar, salt, starch, number one red dye, etc., but you'll get used to it and after a while you will love tomato soup again. Also, you'll live longer and healthier.Sadly, on my wage, I can't afford to buy much of the crap we sell, let alone real food, and that is why I look wane and sickly. You know what is good in tomato soup? Dill weed. Caraway seeds are nice, also. I wish I could afford something besides salt, salt, salt, salt and salt. And Spam. God, I eat a lot of Spam. Sardines are way healthier and cheaper but how many cans of sardines can you eat, really?I am sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but life is hard for us po' whites and I am prematurely old because of the thousands of little hardships I suffer in a country of "rugged individualists" who get rich looting the public purse while crushing any socially, morally, intellectually, or culturally useful government project.I guess you would call me a Rube or White Trash, although I don't think name-calling is useful, intelligent, moral or wise. I can't help being what I am, because everything is a combination of ideas, institutions, customs and individual actions and choices. I only have limited control over my conditions of existence, as Karl Marx, a sociologist or a philosopher would put it. How can I change the world when I can't even find or afford a simple tomato?
Omahawg: dropped down into the lower 30s last week so I freaked and picked a fark-ton of green tomatoes. we've been eating them fried every other day. rest wrapped in newspaper in the pantry.a fark-ton is a lot, people.
Bathia_Mapes: Does that mean we get to have our own version of La Tomatina Festival? Because that would be cool.
windowseat: 12 Costoluto Genovese and 12 Principe Borghese plants make enough sauce to last two people two years. Fark Mexico and Florida. If i want fresh tomatoes I wait until July.

Their flesh is crazy meaty and rich, and in addition to making a fine sauce they go great in salads and you can also stuff them since they hold up so well in the oven. They have very low water content and are crazy productive.

IrateShadow: When is that last time you saw a tomato for sale in the US with that color?
brantgoose: Don't you think it is time for somebody to explain to Americans the economic concepts of "competitive advantage" and "specialization" as it pertains to the production of goods and services, a sort of Economics 101 class for the nation?
