People should be marking this promotional day by deliberately not drinking Guinness in protest at the stranglehold Diageo has over the Irish drinks industry. Nothing special about Guinness anyway.

Who is dumb enough to sign the other side of that lease? You have to be pretty dumb to not know that things change over time and you as the owner will be screwed long term.

it's the creaminess of the guinness that makes it more exciting than many other stouts. though the other stout is inevitably more complex, more tasteful, more interesting... if it's not nitrogen bubbles, it's just a dark beer. guinness has that consistency that calls you back... it's not the taste, it's the whole feel of the beer in your mouth and in your system. no offense to the other stouts of the world. they may be better in many regards, but they can't replace a guinness. i don't really compare stouts with guinness, i think of guinness as it's own category (alongside the other couple beers in like style).

It's a Leasehold Estate, as opposed to a Freehold. This sort of thing is actually quite common, although leases of 99 years are probably one of the most common types. The money is never really supposed to be significant, you often see them for a dollar a year in many places (the St. James's Gate lease is 45 Pounds), as it is treated the same as a sale of private property, except it expires eventually. Usually this is so the government (ie the Crown) retains some sort of "long-term" control.

Left Hand's Milk Stout now comes in a Nitrogen version which matches Guinness' "signature" consistency but with the high quality depth and complexity of flavor that you would expect from a modern microbrew. It is superior to Guinness in every way.

and I really didn't want to knock other stouts. I love real stout beers. but, i also love guinness. it's like, sometimes you want perfectly pan seared scallops in a white wine butter sauce or something with some kind of fancy confit souffle or whatever (i'm just randomly generating words from pretentious menus), and sometimes you want fish and chips. guiness is the fish and chips (but a really good, flew to the uk fish and chips).
