Seriously, subby? I think the general public is more likely to know her as Mrs. Columbo.

Mulgrew is a decent actress; Voyager's problems were more to do with bad scripts and a lack of consistent characterization than with any fault of hers.

She's, like, second or third in terms of Star Trek commanding officers.

By the way, for all the mocking Shatner gets for his ridiculous over-emoting, why doesn't Avery Brooks ever come up? Whenever the guy has a monologue he treats it like he's doing a one-man stage show. And not just on DS9, either. You'd think after, like, the pilot, the director would be like "Hey, Avery, you don't need to project like that. You're miked. This is... TV."

"JAKE! GOD-DAMNIT, JAKE! GO! TO! BED!" *Breaks down weeping* "I NEED YOUR HELP, OLD MAN"

Tony Todd auditioned for that role - missed opportunity.

Kate Mulgrew was actually a recast - the original actress (Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee Genevieve Bujold) wasn't suited for Trek dialogue.

Awkward

Yeah, but the slashfic with O'Brien would have taken on a completely different tone.

Ooh, what if Avery Brooks had been the Doctor? Can you imagine the O'Brien/strong, black, bald Doctor slashfic?

I've never seen a supposed "bad ass" whine more in all my TV life.

Sisko was a bio-terrorist and a murderer. He was my favorite Captain when i remember watching these shows as a kid. Now that I have finished TOS, TNG and am on the Final 10 episodes of DS9, not so sure. I just don't see Kirk being willing to launch bio-chemicals to prove a point. I could see him getting in league with Garrick though.

I am sure he'll be #3 by default when I finish with Voyager and Enterprise.

I still think the main character that got shortchanged the most was Dax. The show just didn't really seem to have much of a use for her beyond decoration and pairing her with Worf. The only great Dax episode I can think of is the one where Ezri has to track down the sniper. Every other main character has a good handful of standout episodes.

I don't know if Kirk wouldn't have acted similarly under a lot of those situations. One thing I'll give Sisko credit for is his attempts to understand and respect other cultures, especially as he got sucked further into the Bajoran religion.

Kirk had a habit of destroying any civilization that didn't live up to his ideals of paradise and lecture them on it. For a perfect example of this, watch his speech at the end of The Apple. It boils down to "Your paradise sucks. You should be more like us."

Even then, it was a great showcase for the TOS Klingons and was primarily about them. Dax was simply a way to get the plot rolling.

I'm currently nearing the end of season one on another re-watch. Even the episode "Dax" has her almost completely sidelined for the majority of the plot, while the rest of the characters argue on her behalf and try to fix things.

Well Picard was never in the sort of predicaments that Sisko had to deal with. And the one time Picard was faced with an ethically questionable decision (to eradicate the Borg once and for all), he dropped the ball, costing countless billions of lives. So fark Picard, team Sisko FTW.

Voyager was really patchy, but I thought Mulgrew put in a very good performance. She played the character just like some serious-minded, senior women executives I've met.

The rest of the cast were awful, except for Robert Picardo as the Doctor, and I probably have to credit Ethan Phillips as Neelix because he did that character well, despite the fact that I'd rather that Neelix had been taken into the Borg.

2012-09-27 12:51:08 PM
Ethan Phillips' character from Benson was not so great on Voyager. It's understandable why they gave him a shot, though, because René Auberjonois' character from Bensen was pretty good on DS9.

I never really understood Sisko's obsession with 20th century racism. By his time, it's as far removed from him as we are from 16th century social issues, and clearly Trek history that follows is far, far bleaker. Compared to what preceded it (slavery) and what apparently follows (nuclear war, wholesale genocide) it seems like a rather odd obsession.
