Considering sideshow bob matched none of those descriptions, I think we have to assume people just thought he was a mooslem

2012-09-27 10:51:33 AM
Uhh, submitter, he had a phone, a GPS and an MP3 player. Just like you, most likely.

Dude got arrested for being brown and bearded, plain and simple, and now the cops are charging with some trumped up bullsh*t.

Sounds like racial profiling.

"A man, with a beard, acting suspiciously" is a description I've not heard since Tom Cruise's divorce.

That's so farking stupid. If he got an iPhone 5, he would have had the phone, MP3 player and GPS all in one.

I'm guessing there had to be more to it than that. If every Arab walking around in public with a cell phone were getting arrested, we'd never hear the end of it. Most likely he was trying to dress up in costume, pretending he was Bane or something. I'm sure he's a harmless fan. But think about it: why would anyone ever bring a GPS into a movie? He was probably wiring a bunch of gizmos together looking like a techie road warrior or something.

THIS.

And the charge can be totally dismissed once he gets his day in court and the judge sees that it was just ordinary devices. WTF is "having a hoax device" anyhow?

The scariest sentence in that article is this one: "Investigators waited to charge Tudela to confirm that he wasn't a threat, Ritter said." So since he wasn't an actual threat, he was charged, which is bad enough. But if he had been an actual terrorist, presumably he would have been bundled off to gitmo with no rights at all, so they better not charge him with some wimpy criminal activity.

HotWingConspiracy: Yeah I can't really understand either. Seriously, what the fark is wrong with people?

Especially the police - I mean how hard is it just to say "Okay, this was a false alarm, but if we get reports like this we have to take them seriously until it is confirmed that they were actually a false alarm". Then it is just a paranoid member of the public to blame, and the police can't really have any complaints laid against them. Doubling down on the stupidity like this and they become the bad guy in the story.

I thought that a similar boilerplate response was pretty much standard for every police dpt in the world for this kind of nonsense.

The FA says that he has a number of items, including (not only) a GPS and MP3 player. So he obviously had something else. Gwinnett is an ethnically diverse area, with a sizable Middle Eastern community. People don't get excited when they see brown people there. This kid was up to something.

I'm no cop, but if the shiat looked like some kinda bomb it sounds like they had probable cause for a search. Why it went beyond a search and "You're good, thanks for your time and sorry for the inconvenience" I can't imagine.

Don't even get me started on those people that have a bike rack on the back of their cars. If they have a car, why do they even need a bike? Very, very suspicious.

Here is Massachusetts' legal definition of a "hoax device":
b) For the purposes of this section, the term "hoax device" shall mean any device that would cause a person reasonably to believe that such device is an infernal machine. For the purposes of this section, the term "infernal machine" shall mean any device for endangering life or doing unusual damage to property, or both, by fire or explosion, whether or not contrived to ignite or explode automatically.

I believe that the legal definition of a "hoax device" is something that's made to look like a bomb or other sort of nefarious device, like painting some wood dowels red and attaching a watch and wires to it. To nail him for that, they'd have to prove that he was trying to look like he had a bomb, not just walking with an MP3 player with the headphone wires hanging out of his pocket.

This shiat's getting insane. Walking while Middle Eastern is the new driving while black.

If he's hanging around with wires hanging out of his close it seems like he wanted people to be suspicious

I can't imagine what it must be like to go through life cowering behind your computer screen pissing your pants in terror while simultaneously claiming to be free and brave.

If it makes you feel any safer, I went through security at two airports recently, had my bag searched each time and they completely missed my solid metal razor.

You're misquoting the article.

In any event, if the best the cops could come up with is a misdemeanor, these mysterious items you're baselessly speculating on couldn't have been any more dangerous or suspicious than what was already listed.
