Many moons ago, I actually went out with some friends on Halloween as Communists. We had one bag and told people we'd divide the candy evenly later, so go ahead and load us up.

Well it makes sense. Douchebags who think dressing as political figures for Halloween is funny have to be mostly white people. To do Romney all you need is a wind tunnel-tested wig. But blackface is considered a bit distasteful.

Halloween used to be about scaring people.

Now it's rightfully used to dress provactively.

How many "Sexy Obamas" are there going to be this year along with Sexy Vampire, Sexy Pirate, Sexy Nurse, Sexy Viking, Sexy Barbarian, Sexy Robot, Sexy Ladybug, and Sexy Zombie?

Actually, that hasn't really been true in a long time. Mostly adults dress up in costumes they think will get them laid...

Romney's not very terrifying. He's really just awkward, sheltered and detached.
I'd say he's more discomforting than anything else.
And there's certainly nothing exciting or dynamic about him.

So I can't say I'm at all surprised that no one seems to want to dress up as him.
And why waste your money on a mask when you can make the same costume at home by wetting a blanket and draping it over yourself?

It might have to do with a certain bible belt being full of racists.

2012-09-27 11:06:02 AM
The Obama mask would also go well with the following costume accessories:

-a policy brief held together by "chintzy binder clips"
-a Christmas wreath around your neck that was mauled by a tiger
-some Grey Poupon stains on your shirt
-No Flag Pin, NO FLAG PIN, damnit!
-a teleprompter that says "Trick or Treat!" on it
-a fake bone going through your nose for that Kenyan heritage touch.

GameSprocket: To be fair, a Romney mask would look like "generic talking head". He just looks like an average CEO type.

Though the caveat to that is that this is mainly because he's such a bad candidate so doomed to failure that the political cartoonists and caricaturists haven't even bothered seizing on a standard set of features to emphasize.

A lot of the "distinctive look" of candidates is cartooning shorthand rather than real features the politician possesses. Obama doesn't have particularly big ears or a big forehead, for instance, that's just something cartoonists decided, partly at random and partly symbolically (because he's known for listening and thinking before acting, something that's a plus for the left and center and considered a minus for the right) was a good way to cue readers in on who was being depicted.

Without cartooning shorthand, frankly a lot of presidents would not be considered very distinctive. Bush, for instance, was a pretty generic bit of east-coast stock that I wouldn't have noticed at a family reunion, and Clinton and Obama are both pretty standard-looking guys for the midwestern region. The only recent president I can think of that was almost cartoonishly distinctive to begin with was Carter.

1. You are a genius, sir. And I say this as an Obama supporter, that's worth a click on the 'funny' button.

2. Actually, kids in the trick-or-treat age group are often Boy scouts, and I know in my town at least they did like 80% of sidewalk maintenance. Mixing concrete is one of those life skill things they teach.

//Though point 2 may or may not still be true, they've apparently moved away from "volunteer construction projects, free labor, and dicking around at campsites with your friends" and toward weirdly emphatic campaigning against gay people. Weird because the unspoken rule in the '90s was that you didn't acknowledge the fact that the boys had the capacity for sexuality at all.

Oh, thanks.

I just got the mental image of Nixon dressed up like Dr. Frank-N-Furter. And now I need mindbleach.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: I think wearing a Dick Cheney mask and carrying a hunting rifle would be infinitely more terrifying. Especially for those of us without health insurance.

And I have to compliment your alias. My Danish neighbor used to get me loaded on that shiat while feeding me herring and large grain breads of various sorts. Good times.

Dick Morris probably has, but I am sure he thinks those polls are skewed too. You know, the pollsters only spoke with actual Trick-or-Treaters and not Cosplay folks.

I vaguely remember some article years ago that said that the Halloween mask market has picked the president correctly every time.

Sorry, Romney (sad trombone).

Republicans are super easy to terrify. Spending money on a mask is overkill.

As a result of childhood confusion between the '10 most wanted' posters and 'The President of the USA' portrait in the post office, Nixon masks terrify me.

I think that a great use for the Romney mask would be for a group of Furries to drive around with Romney tied to the roof.

I have a BevMo less than 2 miles from my house that special orders Akvavit for me all the time. I'm leaving in a bit to go pick up a Danish brand (Aalborg), along with some Chaucer's Raspberry dessert wine for some baking projects (and after dinner sipping). I just have to hide it from the rest of the family or Gran will complain it's not a Norwegian Linie Akvavit and my sis will guzzle down any and all alcohol containing items the minute she can get to them. I'm trying to talk my hard drinking sister into dressing as a diseased liver for Hallowe'en, but so far, it's a no-go.

Duke Phillips' Singing Bears: "I miss scary costumes. Nobody does scary anymore"

Yeah. Because it's a holiday that doesn't involve strong 'round-up-the-family' traditions.
Which means it's a drinking and sex holiday; effectively, a het-pride parade. (see also: St Patrick's day)

If you want to do scary, do it for the actual trick-or-treating.
Kids appreciate that stuff - even if their helicopter parents don't.

GameSprocket: To be fair, a Romney mask would look like "generic talking head". He just looks like an average CEO type.

This. I walked into a Spirit Halloween shop yesterday, and saw displays of these right in front. If the Romney one hadn't been right next to Obama, I'd have never guessed that was him. It's much too bland.

Which I guess means they captured his essence perfectly.

Michael Jackson.

Name two black men that you can dress up as to scare white people without being a cracker racist.

Bonus Points: You don't have to wear black-face.

Extra Bonus Points: If you named Mahatma Gandhi, you get an extra half-point for being half right.

A New York City Liberal Jew has been playing Obama on SNL for the last five years WITHOUT ANY SKIN TONE MAKE-UP AT ALL. It's as if they hired a black actor to play Othello. Not that that has ever happened*, but it's as if.

*To tell the truth, this has happened from time to time. Nobody remembers who, but Othello has been played by many distinguished African gentlemen.

You vaguely remember some article from years ago? This is a direct quote from the very same article linked to at the top of this very thread:

Skeptics might say the costume poll is just window dressing meant to mask the real issues, but ABC News reports that BuyCostumes mask sales have correctly predicted the victor in the past three elections, while Spirit's mask sales have been right in the past four.

"Our presidential index has proven to be a consistent and accurate predictor of the next president for nearly two decades," Spirit Halloween company CEO and president Steven Silverstein told NewsMax.

For instance, Spirit Halloween figures show that Bill Clinton outsold Bob Dole by 71 percent to 29; George W. Bush outsold Al Gore by 57 percent to 43; Bush outsold John Kerry by 65 percent to 35; and Obama outsold John McCain by 60 percent to 40.

Speaking of polling/surveys/whatnot...

That "UnSkewed Polls" site uses the "QStarNews Quick Poll" as part of its analysis.

Link

The web-based survey included 2075 responses surveyed between September 10-15. The poll has a margin of error of three percent.
