WTF is a "type writer"?

When the typewriter is banned, I hope he shows up with a chisel, hammer and stone tablet.

He's not loud, he types with purpose.

cman: WTF is a "type writer"?

I think it's a device used in ancient times by the Romans to make captions for their cats.

There's a picture in the article, but here's a good description: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Typewriter

They're very good for making permanent copies of text, when a printer isn't available.

How decidedly un-German of him.

I've actually known people who complain about the keyboard for their new computer being to quiet. I'm sorry, but there's no real need for the buttons to be noisy. Just smack anybody that either pounds the keys or has an old noisy keyboard and the problem will be solved.

And if they go to tablets somebody will likely have long fingernails that clack on the screen and people will still complain. Not to mention the added clicking sound you can turn on to make it sound like a keyboard.

Unfortunately, when I did that, I couldn't get the Morse code straight key in the picture, and have the text still be readable. It's a compromise.

If you actually find the clacking of a keyboard in any way annoying, you have issues. Get over it.

I tend to like old noisy keyboards. The mechanical springs in them provide much better bounce back and typing feel and you can feel when contacts have been made. There is actually a moderate demand for extremely expensive new model M keyboards among professional typists and some computer techs. I can easily see someone who is a very good typist and used to a good model m keyboard or Early knock-off of it that had similar feel complaining about the new rubberized keyboards and their crappy feel.

Interestingly there are a number of models of very cheap keyboards with plastic keys that have a similar feel. In the past 4 years I have bought 5 keyboards 2 for $85 each and 3 for about $9 each. i don't like the $9 dollar ones as well but its only worth about $15 more to me not $9 and so far the $9 ones have help up very well.

I have in my office some SQL code I typed up with that thing as a joke. Hardest part: No "" character, so I had to rewrite some of it to use "BETWEEN".

Until the power goes out. Then my totally manual and very portable Olivetti just lets out a mechanical chortle and keeps bangin' away.

More accurately, this is not at the German Parliament but the federal parliament of Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein (which is a Bundesland, sort of like a U.S. state).

Ex-marine coworker here destroys keyboards often because of this. Drives the rest of us batty. You can hear her all over the firm.

Give him an office with a door and an IBM Model M keyboard. The office is for the noise. The keyboard is difficult to destroy. In my youth I have pounded my Modem M with my fist in a hormonal fueled passive-aggressive rage and it still works 15 years later.

That happened to me, too. In fact, the thread was archived before I even noticed it. Even funnier, my wife commented about the headline and article to me, but my mind still didn't register it.

THIS! mechanical keyboards are awesome, and anyone who has a problem with that needs to get smacked around a bit...
