It's not as bad as its reputation, but that's largely because it depends where you are- some areas have decent data, some areas have shiat data. Since at least some of the data comes from Open Street Map, it's not surprising that there's some serious data quality issues.

Now, why did Apple do this? Largely because Google wouldn't let them do their own turn-by-turn, but apparently Apple wasn't willing to provide Google with enough tracking data about the users.

As I've said in the past: the real mistake was hitching their wagon to Google, who offers mapping data for one reason and one reason alone: to turn their users into marketing data they can sell to their customers. More and more, Google makes me paranoid.

Hm. Hardly any of this conversation seems to be about the travesty that is Apple Maps. Keep deflecting. For Jobs's sake, never stay on point.

My fave is the panoramic shot commercial that folks have been doing for 4 years now with their smartphones like it is something new. That seems to be their whole ad campaign, really. "Here is technology from the early 2000 era that is new to you because you were busy taking pics of your dog eating a peep village to post on BoingBoing." or something.

The new update for Maps on iPhone is sweet. I just stared at my house for 10 minutes.

Why is Lindsey being a douche to me.... Like sorry I think the new maps on the iPhone 5 are awesome

Well at least they're not coming from children and drooling retards...

Why is this whole maps thing a big deal anyway? So the first release of some software didn't go perfectly, big whoop, happens all the time, it'll get fixed.

It's a big deal because Apple made a big deal about the map app when they announced the iPhone 5. Had it been just a sidebar when introducing IOS 6, it probably would have had the usual subdued grumbling when it did not work correctly.
I'm sure it will get fixed, and perhaps Apple learned something from this mistake. But not likely.

Seriously. Google maps is a good product, but Apple clearly feels they need to sever such close ties with Google (maps being one of the key ingredients in the smartphone / mobile OS milieu, it's easy to see why). I've played around with the new maps application... Turn by turn works well, some POIs aren't listed yet, but overall it seems pretty good. I'm sure it will get better with time.
