Please do tell us all about the official county or state Democrat websites that had pictures of Bush as a monkey.

It's only racist if you consider 100s of years of historical context.

No, you're the racist. Boy, this is useful dialog.

Nah, actually he's right. It's a really, really weak argument presented almost exclusively by racists, to act as though they are oblivious to something that is obviously racist.

The ability to recognize the inherent racism in a certain implication simply requires you to be aware of the fact that it's an oft-used racist implication.

For example, it's not racist to portray someone as a drunken wife beater. It *IS* racist to portray an Irishman as a drunken wife-beater. Because it's a known stereotype. It is not racist to portray someone as being stingy and conniving. It *IS* racist to portray a Jew as being stingy and conniving. Because it's a known stereotype. It is not racist to portray someone as being a savage tribesman. It *IS* racist to portray a black man as being a savage tribesman. Because it's a known stereotype.

See the pattern? Claiming to be oblivious to something that is obviously racist to almost everyone else, says one of two things about you. Either you are incredibly dumb and have somehow not noticed a characterization that life has been throwing at you since you first drew breath, or you know goddamn well that it's racist, and you're playing dumb about it. Which means you are a racist.

So which is it? Imbecile, or racist? You pick, we'll be satisfied with whichever you choose...

Let's keep in mind that these are the same dumbasses who thought that the Onion's "Obama's 19-Year-Old Son Makes Rare Appearance At DNC" story was real, and demanded to know why the MSM wasn't covering it.

Fact: A significant percentage of today's Republican Party are simply too stupid to engage in anything remotely resembling reasonable debate. About ANYTHING.

That's all in the context. For centuries, black people were portrayed are subhuman monkeys. So yes, this is racist when portraying a black guy, and not when portraying a white guy.

For crying out loud, how is that difficult to understand ?

If a criticism is based on actual fact, on policies that he supports or actions he has taken, then yes, any criticism is acceptable. If it's based on delusions and lies it is not, and if those delusions are of a racist nature, well, you may be a racist.

Your argument completely dismisses a thousand years of history, politics, and junk science wherein black people were described as a distinct, subhuman species.

Depicting a black person as a monkey is a reference to this history, and is based solely in race.

Depicting a white person as a monkey is a personal insult based on that person's intelligence, appearance and mannerisms.

So, yeah, they are different.

not according to my voter's registration card.

Let me guess. "Independent"?

I wonder if you felt the same way on "respecting the office" when it came to Bush.

Bush was the one who disrespected his own office. Even Republicans know this. (Hint: How many times did he or Cheney speak at the RNC convention? For that matter, how many times was it acknowledged that either of them existed.)

I think the problem with portraying Obama as a chimp (you know, if it wasn't for the racism) is the fact that he just doesn't look like one the same way Bush did. I mean Bush had the expressions, the lips, etc. East comparison. But Obama just doesn't look like a chimp.

untaken_name: digistil: Both are in poor taste, but only one is racist. Please let us know if you truly don't understand why only one is racist.

If it's only racist when done by, for, or against persons of one race but not others, it's racist. Therefore, the very idea that comparing people to monkeys is only racist when it's done to members of a certain race is, itself, a racist idea because it requires you to differentiate between people based solely on race. If you continue to push the idea that only people of one race cannot be compared to monkeys, you are actually perpetuating the stereotype. This is why historical context is a bad basis for perpetuating ideas, because if the actions of people many years ago are still used as a basis for determining our actions today, then we have not progressed at all, only codified negative stereotypes into the public consciousness so deeply that they become ingrained. Should a small child, knowing nothing of history, make fun of a black child by comparing them to a monkey, they will be quickly corrected and told that we do not call black people monkeys because in the past they were compared to monkeys. This just perpetuates the idea. The only way to end racist stereotypes is to quit letting them be effective. This means ignoring racist idiots instead of bringing MORE attention to them and their ideas.
