Ambivalence: OMG that was a real complaint. If you have young children, everything precious you own should be encased in bubble wrap or a hard case or you have no one but yourself to blame if it gets broke.

There are these wonderful things made called Pelican Cases. Pelican Cases are THE cases for storing and transporting delicate equipment - my dad has sworn by them for decades for keeping telescope lenses and eyepieces safe. They come with a lifetime warranty, too, a really good one.

But even the warranty for Pelican Cases specifically states that it doesn't cover damage caused by "shark bite, bear attack, or children under 5."

Newsflash: young children destroy everything you love and the speed with which they destroy it is directly proportional to how valued said item is.

If that's the best people can come up with, it must be a pretty good phone. I laughed at the guy that was complaining about the new connector because he lost his new power cord in 3 days. That's his fault for losing the cable. That first point only reinforces the fact that glass is actually a pretty good material for keeping a device looking good(except if you drop it, of course).

Weld a steel plate over the back of the phone.

it's simple physics. Case is aluminum, keys are brass or steel. Aluminum is 2.5 on the mohs scale brass is 3.5 regular steel is4.5. harder stuff scratches softer stuff. Unless you make the case out of tungsten carbide it's going to get scratches

I have no idea how many phones my ex-wife went through because she let our son play with them. Stupid biatch just COULDN'T learn.

I went on a volcano tour in Hawaii last week and my iPhone 5 fell into a lava flow. The new aluminum back on it turned to sludge. I'm very disappointed because my 4s would've been fine.

Aluminum is actually considered a bad casing material from a stylistic viewpoint because it is self-passivating, i.e. it forms an oxide layer very rapidly, and that oxide layer is impermeable to Oxygen (well, OK, impermeable to a degree, it's got a very low diffusion coefficient, but technically there are no zeroes in science).

The problem is that aluminum is the standard reflective light grey shared by most transition elements with a metallic phase, but the oxide is an opaque white that adds a certain "sheen" that alters the optical properties (short version: changes the color).

So, where with, say, a steel case, a very small scratch will not be visible because the loose oxide is constantly forming and flaking off (unless the scratch is actually deep enough to be visible in itself) a very shallow abrasion on an Aluminum surface will result in a more-or-less permanent (to the extent that any solid material is permanent, subject to further wear) white line of thicker oxide concentration, even if the scratch itself doesn't have a high enough aspect ratio to be visible on its own.

So... this may well be a valid complaint, a steel or laquered case will in fact take substantially greater damage than an Aluminium one before the surface marring is visible.

All this said, exactly the same reason is why Aluminum is considered a good casing material for things that you don't particularly care what they look like. Considering how light it is, the fact that the surface self-passivates and scratches almost instantly self-seal with oxide instead of forming diffusion concentration sites that eventually eat the casing entirely is great for practical surface treatments. It just looks bad, which can be a downer if your device is supposed to be fashionable.

For reference on what you're avoiding by using aluminum casing, if anyone's had a car with an ungalvanized steel bumper, remember how rust will start at the bottom and eat its way up in pits until the whole thing is more rust than metal? That's the result of diffusion concentration features and an oxide that doesn't self-passivate.

The only legit complaint on that list is the new power cords and ridiculously high-priced adapters. Gotta love a company that's willing to alienate it's own products to make a quick buck. Can't have people actually using that product you put so much time into. At this point, I'm kind of shocked all Apple accessories don't have an expiration date.

I don't know why so many people are complaining about the power cords. Sure they loose some compatibility with their accessories, but Apple provided a solution that converts the old connector to the new connector.

Does anyone remember the days before smart phones, when every goddamned cell phone came with it's own proprietary port and power cord?

A redesign of a power cord every ten years is fine by me. Frankly I was expecting a new cord way back when Apple was about to announce the first iPhone.

I actually get these criticisms. Aluminum for a phone makes no sense. Phones are small enough that the weight savings from aluminum vs a steel alloy are minimal. The same is not true of laptops/tablets. You'd be much better off making a phone out of some sort of alloy (or gasp plastic/kevlar, like on the razr maxx/etc.).

Mr. Chainsaw: If you're too stupid/cheap to buy a case to protect your $200+ phone, you deserve to have this happen to you. I have a decent plastic case and an Invisi-Shield screen protector on my 4s, and it doesn't have a single scratch after almost a year of heavy use.

I don't have a case on my Photon and it still looks great (despite falling out of my front shirt pocket onto concrete a few times). Aluminum is just a dumb material for a phone. It's not scratch resistant and with something the size of a phone the weight savings are negligible.

1). Losing some compatibility for some people means buying a new $100 docking station.

2). The proprietary charge really should go the way of the dodo. With all the research and work they put into making these new smart phones work with everything they possibly can, I find it confusing why they'd try to make it harder for you to actually use them that way.
3). Part of technology improving should be to phase out things that make them less user/consumer friendly, not ensure that there's one every ten years.

Maybe the lightning connector is really just that much better that there was no more forward progress they could make with the older model, but I seriously doubt it.

At least they actually changed the form factor of the connector this time, unlike when they kept the 30-pin connector the same but started floating the Firewire pins, so that all my old iPod chargers wouldn't work with newer devices that could only charge over USB.

Also, the know 8-pin Lightning connector doesn't use Magsafe connectors, does it?

If not, why the hell not? Plugging a Macbook into A/C power is a goddamn joy compared to every other rechargeable device I've ever used, including and especially the more recent compact 30-pin dock cables that don't have the release springs so you're basically forced to wrench it out of place while putting unnecessary stress on both connectors.

I think the old connector probably was a hindrance. When designing something to be lighter and thinner, getting rid of a 10 year old technology probably frees up enough space to shave off a few millimeters and fit in more components.

Could they have done it with the old connector?

Probably, but that doesn't change the fact that sooner or later they would have to move on. Technology becomes obsolete as newer and better things take it's place. Fact of the world.

I just don't get the backlash against this iPhone. The iPhone 4 was far worse of a product at launch because of the bad antenna. What does the iPhone 5 have wrong with it that will rival that? The Apple maps app? Not really because Google has announced that they are currently working on their own iOS 6 maps app. So all a person has to do is wait.

if you want Galaxy S3 than get one, no one is forcing you to stick with Apple. Personally I've grown to loathe my Galaxy 1st gen and nothing will convince me to stick with android, becasue the problem with an android phone is that the carriers' don't really care to support it. there are so many out there that your android phone becomes obsolete in the eyes of your provider in 6 months which is when they decide to stop releasing updates to the android OS. Apple at least makes a few iOS upgrades to it's products before labeling them obsolete.

My phone was the hottest of the new android smart phones when it was released but my carrier never even bothered to update the OS more than once. It still is running 2.1 (Eclair). It would be nice to have a phone that doesn't require me to jailbreak it to get it running on the most recent compatible OS.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way in a row over this. I just understand why people would be upset about the charger/adapter. Personally, I don't need an iPhone 5. The 4 I found on my front lawn after Mardi Gras two years ago is still doing fine. Infact, I'm posting from it right now. If only it had been purchased from Verizon, I might actually have activated it and used it. fark AT&T. In the ass.

umad: there have been perfectly acceptable standard connectors available for over a decade?

Mini- and Micro-USB are terribly designed connectors for something that's going to be plugged and unplugged on an almost daily basis, and carried around in a linty pocket in between.
