I can't believe that Goodyear is still in the passenger car/SUV business. They spend a lot on adverts, and every time I go to buy tires for my SUV, car or truck my price is $15-150 more per tire vs. similar tires from other companies (like Cooper Tire, National Tire or imports such as Yokohama, Toyo, Falken or Hakkipalitta). They are on par with Bridgestone or Continental (Japanese and German respectively). Maybe a lot of people just don't shop around or want to try a tire that's not a big name brand...

They have a lot of other business also (like tires for NASA, and other rubber products) including contract sales of tires (OEM's) and I used to buy from them when we got government pricing.

I guess it's just a "keep the name out there" thing.

I'd wager that most name-brand tires do their business with government (which you mentioned) or are auto manufacturers OEM suppliers for new car tires. My car had Goodyear's when bought new, but I've bought pretty much the cheapest tire I can get when I've needed them.

Tires are not the place I'm willing to cheap out on. I don't want to find out that the off-brand has issues at 70 miles per hour.

I'm with you on this but if you're going to a reputable shop, you're going to find cheaper alternatives to the largest names and they wont fall apart. $400 for a pair of replacement GoodYears or $250 for the other ones?
(can't remember the brand, but it's a reputable one)
The other ones are working just fine and I'm not gentle on tires, or your mother.
