this is f*cking brilliant. If it's true and not a hoax...it's hilarious.

Funny explanation, but more likely he hired these people in order to get some incriminating evidence out of the way of the federal probe he is under.

Not quite:

Rep. Michael Grimm's Office Break-In Not Quite Watergate; Just an 8th Grader Who Broke a Window

Grimm initially claimed thieves broke in using old keys and then smashed windows to make it appear like it was a just a case of random vandalism -- which it was. He suspected that the burglars installed software on the hard drives of computers in the office designed to delete files.

Nope -- a "police source" tells the New York Daily News that it "appears that a campaign staffer wiped the hard drives accidentally after mistakenly inserting a Linux system disc into a Windows machine."

i'm not sure a linux install would wipe his files. if it was done properly, someone could have ganked his data, installed linux and then used it to pull information from elsewhere on his network.

I dunno though. the article was light on the technical details.

Yeah, that's the normal response to someone who was the victim of a crime. And who breaks in to install Linux? It was either a Libertarian, or this is all staged.

Presumably the "break in" would be a diversion to give him cover to say "well I can't guarantee that there was nothing erased from my system". The guy has changed his story about what happened several times, and it's obvious that he's crookeder than a goat's hind leg.

if nothing else, it gives him a reason to delete data files and scrub his hard drive. if he were REALLY paranoid, he'd yank the PC hard drive and throw it out/destroy it. then buy a new one and reinstall his OS from scratch. of course, if the entire point was to just trash his data and cover his tracks then he's got a possible 'out'.

then again, maybe the cops could seize the affected hard drive as evidence in the 'break in' and have their forensic computer techs go over it with a host of data recovery tools.

Because Linux will automatically eat everything on your HDD if the CD is inserted.

Linux used to treat Solaris data partitions as swap partitions and freely write over them. The one byte partition codes were the same.

I have CDs (well DVDs) that will do that. They're designed for provisioning and OS deployment. They check to see if there's a standard image and if there isn't there soon will be. They install Win7 though, not Linux.

Wouldn't even those have a prompt to make sure?

But anyway, that's totally not what happened. This is just a really lame story to cover this guy's tracks.

Only if you already have the right partitions and installed OS. At least in the case of a particular set I built.

Because breaking in to install Linux didn't give that away.

I know linux is a fate worse than death but

A later newscast says that they found the vandal (an 8th grader) and that:

"that police investigators had taken a look at the campaign's computer systems and determined that they hadn't been cleared. There wasn't even any evidence that an intruder had ever entered the office."

Grimm: "OMG! Watergate! Someone broke in and stole files!"

Police: "No...the window was a stupid kid's fault."

Grimm: "But, but, files were stolen! Shenanigans!"

Police: "Nope again. It seems a staffer of yours erased data by inserting a Linux OS CD, why would they do that Mr. Grimm? What files were erased?"

Grimm: "Potato!"

Based on the later reports, I'm guessing someone left a live Linux CD in a drive overnight. Some clueless staffer comes in, sees a broken window, turns on a PC (which boots Linux off the CD, but doesn't mount the HD), can't see any of the files they expect, and jumps to conclusions. Clueless congressional candidate runs with it.

How do you "accidentally" wipe out a harddrive by fiddling with a Linux installer? Assuming they used one with a guided installer, it warns you many times the data will be lost if you proceed. How stupid can someone be? What on earth were they trying to accomplish anyway? Setting up a dual-boot?

I don't get it. Someone keyed my car last week, ME! an AMERICAN! which is obviously an attack on my freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights Saint Joseph and Queen Elizabeth, also Australia should care about my ailments, total terrorism guys call the feds is the President on the line yet? This is especially heinous because I live a comfortable existence working for the Govna, who explicitly promised me during the interview there would be NO field work required in order to vote on laws and stuff. I mean, it's basically worse than rape actually because (A) I was deceived that I'd be immune to middle class problems, (B) the ensuing brouhaha failed to divert the attention of federal authorities investigating me, (C) I'm white and precious.

But no one cares.

They just said I was blowing it way out of proportion. I don't think they understand how much I hate Linux.

/end sarcasm

And Windows that gives full admin rights by default is better?

Rather than have to constantly fix my sister's laptop, I created a limited-privilege user with no admin rights. Given that she has two children under ten, it has prevented any further support calls from her. Admin rights by default is a bad idea.

This. Setting up dual boot with an existing Windows partition is pretty easy. I'm not exactly a Linux buff and I've done it.

Most of the GUI installers I've seen default to setting up a dual boot system if they detect another OS. Even if you let the installer wipe and repartition automatically, you still have to confirm it.

/would like to see what filesystems his drive is partitioned into
//and whether or not there is a swap partition.
///odds are that there is no swap, and the filesystem is FAT32 or NTFS.

Tampering with evidence is a much more serious crime then whatever the fark he's under investigation for.

Interestingly, Linux Mint had a strange issue where it wouldn't detect my Windows 7 installation if I tried it via pen drive.
Of course, I ended up destroying my Windows Partition before realizing that was the issue...
