I'll just repost what I wrote in an earlier redlit thread:

Honestly, I almost hope Romney was being serious and didn't know why airliners don't have windows operable at altitude. Otherwise, he comes across as really, really creepy.

I mean, who the hell jokes about his wife's plane being forced into an emergency landing because of a smoke-filled cabin?

This reminds me a bit of Romney's claim that he couldn't recall his prep school "prank" of holding a kid down and cutting off his hair. You almost hope that he's lying...because only a psychopath would be so callous as to forget something so obviously traumatizing that so many of his classmates remember it so clearly. The psychopath thing isn't a personal invention, by the way. Just Google "Romney" and "psychopath" and "bully."

The more I learn about this guy, the more I find him genuinely disturbing.

Sorry apologists. There is no way this was a joke. We've seen the video, and it's not even just bad delivery(Hell, some moron who thought he knew what he was talking about called it "dry humor, like Monty Python".). He doesn't hesitate, pause or chuckle in any way to indicate that it weas a punchline, or that he is waiting for a reaction from the crowd, he says 'Lucky my wife got out.', 'Wonder why you can't open windows on planes to let in oxygen?', and 'Good thing the pilots had enough oxygen to land, though.' all in one bundle.

THIS

WAS

NOT

A

JOKE.

People do not run straight through a "joke" without waiting to see if said joke gets a response, or laughing to indicate it is a joke. He just plowed straight on, and it's not a "fact checking" error, either, get up off your knees and get Romney's dick out of your mouth, subby, he's never going to reciprocate.

I can accept it was intended as a joke. But I also know Romney is incapable of delivering one. You want to blame the audience for a bad comedian?

I don't think Romney thinks planes should all have windows people can open. Also, I don't think he was joking.

"Basically he was retelling the story and when he said 'I don't know why they don't have roll down windows on airplanes,' he looked at the audience and everyone laughed," Everitt told TheBlaze. "It was a clearly delivered joke ... There were 1,000 people there that will tell you the same thing."

BULLSHIAT

There is a little rumble of a chuckle, THAT is IT.

The video, since the author of TFA couldn't be bothered. Tell me where the "1,000 people laughing" are.

It's Mitt's turn at being the victim of the media Heathers. I'm not saying it's right. I'm not piling on. I'm just saying, there's a tipping point where untrue things about a candidate start having a life of their own because the candidate has lost so much control of their image.

Al Gore "invented" the internet. (And "wore beige colors" because he "desperately" needed to "re-invent" himself, and during the debates he "sighed audibly" and "leered threateningly" over W -- and Barbara Bush was "worried he might hit my son". And was the lyingest "liar" ever and the liberaliest libber ever to lib)

They're audible closer to the beginning when they are cheering(Or whatever we call it) when he mentions that he's glad she's alive. You can hear the crowd there, but apparently not when all 1,000 people are "laughing"? It's this stupid retroactive crap again that annoys me.

The real question is, WTF is Egg wearing there?

Hmmm, if I recall correctly, this is right after she got off the plane. I think when she rolled down the window, there was a bird strike. Best I can guess.

Gulper Eel: God Is My Co-Pirate: Dark or self-deprecating humour is still, you know, humour. If you have to email the campaign to find out if it was a joke, it's not funny.

It sucks that campaigns have to be about who's the better "and here's Chet with the sports and weather" candidate.

I was sort of looking forward to Mitt running an eye-meltingly dull campaign, but he screwed that up too.

Yeah. He shouldn't have to be a natural comedian or your best friend, and god knows nobody can be "on" for every second of the 18-month campaign season, but he does have to be a clear communicator and reasonably human.

"When you have a fire in an aircraft, there's no place to go, exactly, there's no - and you can't find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don't open. I don't know why they don't do that. It's a real problem,"

It could have passed for a joke until the 'its a real problem' part. Why would he make a joke and then add "I'm not joking, it's a real problem" on to the end of it?

Also, he wants to add oxygen to a fire. Truly, he has a dizzying intellect.

Maybe if Romney had some specifics on important topics, they'd have something better to write about.

All you need to know about the enthusiasm gap between Palin in '08 and Romney in '12 is that his fans didn't rush to Wikipedia to edit the entry on airplanes to include the line "aerospace engineers agree that a superior subsonic airliner design would include window cranks at every seat...for safety."

Lots of people in politics and journalism have a really dark sense of humor. And then there's the old-money stiff-upper-lip phenomenon - yes, your spouse may have just escaped having their leg chewed off by a lion and she may be totally freaked out herself, but it would be bad form to sound any more distressed than "I say, Mortimer - that cat was feeling a bit peckish, wasn't he?"

Jokes can be effective for campaign speeches but those farkers have to be thoroughly vetted and practiced. If you're a Bill Clinton-level speaker, maybe you can get away with a joke on the fly. But this is professional politics and biatching about media reaction isn't going to change that.
