Everything on this Earth is just a prop, costume jewelry, for Madonna. If you enjoy her act, that's fine with me. Personally I think it rarely rises above pre-pubescence. But taking any of her remarks seriously...you may as well analyze the utterances of Ted Nugent.

That said, I think it's rather brave and somewhat noble of her to talk Obama up during her tour. I've never really subscribed to that "shut up and sing" thing where people act mortally offended because someone with a little limelight chose to share it with a cause they believed in. If anything I'm more offended by celebrities who take the safe road of being patently inoffensive in order not to alienate.

I realize I'm in the minority on that one but I know I'm right so fark anyone who thinks different.

Many people assume that if you're a professional entertainer, you're automatically incapable of coherent thought on any weightier subject. While there are many instances where that's demonstrably true -- Charlton Heston comes to mind, along with a number of present-day C&W singers and any number of professional wresslers -- Madonna is actually pretty sharp and well-informed. I heard her speak several years ago as part of a public affairs conference and her participation and comments were entirely extemporaneous. (She wasn't just reading a speech, that is.) She had an impressive grasp of U.S. foreign policy for a "mere" singer and made her arguments vividly and cogently.

What is ironic is that if Sharia law were ever the law of her homeland, she would be one of the first women buried up to her neck and then stoned to death.

2012-09-26 07:49:38 AM
I'm inclined to believe that she really didn't intend the connotations that have become attached to that phrase. She probably really did intend to mock the people who intend to use it; given that this is Madonna. That's a far more plausible explanation than that she planned to show some kind of solidarity with the types of people who actually think this is true (and, perhaps not coincidentally, have never been particularly keen on Madonna either).

It's still a farking stupid move to make. We live in an age where all possible interpretations of anything anyone says are considered valid, and that requires people of any importance to watch their words like hawks. Madonna's relevance has not faded completely yet; she cannot yet afford to be so careless.

In my humble opinion is not brave or noble. Those who do it are cashing in on the celebrity of the person they talk up and basking in the reflected glory. Same works for trash talking the other guy. simple attention whoring is all it is. and as these folks are professional attention whores, they have gotten quite good at it.

I tend to think they can say whatever they want on their stage as long as they accept the consequences without whining.

The problem is when politicians and political organizations put them up on convention stages or campaign with them. I'm looking at you guy's that scheduled Clint Eastwood and every other celebrity that spoke at either convention except Natalie Portman.

You know what's ironic? I'll tell you what's ironic.

Here's something Obama said yesterday:

Calling the fight against human trafficking "one of the great human rights causes of our time," Obama announced new steps to deal with a problem he called "barbaric and evil" with no place in a civilized world.

"It is a debasement of our common humanity. It ought to concern every community, because it tears at our social fabric," said Obama. "It ought to concern every business, because it distorts markets. It ought to concern every nation, because it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime. I'm talking about the injustice, the outrage of human trafficking, which must be called by its true name - modern slavery."

This is from a president that has done little about illegal immigration to the U.S., which is the biggest driver of human trafficking in the Western hemisphere.

Now that's what I call ironic. Or maybe the word we're looking for here is hypocritical.
