66 year old LG lady jumps out of a plane onto the Capital lawn to show support for military families?

[okaywiththis]

Not quite sure how it translates into more attention paid to issues surrounding military families but good on her.

Because that's how military families get around. They take planes everywhere, but due to the dearth of useable airports, they can't land near their destination, so they have to just jump out of the plane and parachute to where they're going. It's not a very efficient use of resources, and I'm glad someone is calling attention to this. Maybe soon they'll get runways put in in more convenient locales.

Good for her. I'm glad she enjoyed it. There's nothing quite like the feeling of jumping out of a plane at 13,000'.

I was stationed at Edwards and let me tell you, riding the space shuttle to work every day was farking off the hook.

I am seeing a number of empty threads where new comments are not allowed. Maybe there is some sort of system problem going on?

You were stationed at Edwards? Man. I heard about that place. We were at Tet. Man, it was hard. Nobody remembers any of us anymore but, we were there. All we wanted was a log-ride but, they never built us one. I think Danforth wanted a log ride most of all but all he got was some lame-ass pipe up his ass. That war was hell on all of us. Especially for Danforth.

I have a problem with this flagrant waste of taxpayers dollars.....if the military has all this extra money to take politicians skydiving for fun then they need their budgets cut.

That's how I feel. I'd love to go skydiving for my job, but considering I work for a private company my boss would react by laughing at me and calling it a huge waste of money and time.

hmmm..... interesting how that works....

I know more than one who went to jump school (or wanted to) because it's fun to jump out of planes.

// my dad, upon meeting such a fellow, asked him "Why would you voluntarily jump out of a perfectly good airplane?"

It's woven into the required training schedules, just like staidum flyovers. They have to make the flights for training purposes anyways, so all these things change is their target destinations

She should've spent that money on actually supporting the troops and their families instead of just showing support for them.

Man, drop the "successful" part of that headline, and today's news cycle would have looked a little different.

I can see the Republican spin now, "Democrats suicide bombing Statehouses."

Prettner Solon joins a list of politicians, including former President George H.W. Bush, who have taken to skydiving to promote causes or for recreation.

Bush took to skydiving in 1944, before he entered politics.

I've heard the explanation before and the flyovers' effectiveness are plausible; however, in what combat situation does the infantry drop into war zones with fat people strapped to them? It is merely pork barrel spending from an insanely over-saturated budget.....if this kind of crap was a routine part of the food stamp program most people would think differently. Taxes apparently only piss republicans off if they benefit a potential democrat voter.

Decades later, his son would take the US economy skydiving and forget to pack the chute.

The "fat people" serve as a decent simulacrum for supplies and gears that soldiers have to carry when dropped into war zones
