Funny how when the previous seal hunting ban went into effect the herring population took a dive so hard, a cull was nessisary.

We Canadians don't kill baby seals.

But boy do we eat a lot of baby cows.

Funny how when we killed off entire fisheries of the northern oceans, it was still somehow the seals' fault that there were no more cod. Or salmon. Or herring. Or tuna. Or whales--hey, wait a minute.

Funny how there's millions of people who like to run around screaming about "personal responsibility" and they're often the same people who need to blame animals for our mismanagement of the entire farking planet. But hey, those animals won't be filing any lawsuits, like those damn tree-hugging humans do, will they?

Fark Canada. I just found out I am banned from stepping foot in the country -- for a DUI I had 10 years ago. And it was a just misdemeanor DUI, no wreck, hell I wasn't even swerving. Cop pulled me over because license plate light was not bright enough.

And to think, my tax dollars go to their defense.

You're pissed that a foreign country won't let you in because you have a criminal record? Cry me a river.

FYI:

1. it is illegal to hunt baby seals (aka whitecoats). They've not been hunted for decades.
2. the use of the hakapik is rare (limited to experienced old-timers), most seals are hunted by firearm.
3. Harp seals are not endangered. Recent surveys off the Canada's east coast put populations at over 5.5 million.
4. Europe's ban on seal imports exclude those pelts harvested by traditional aboriginal groups.
5. there is a debate between hunters and animal rights activists re: the relationship between seal populations and cod stocks. This may be moot as the cod fishery is currently closed (that's another subject of controversy).

Not allowing entry for a DUI is kinda silly. Of course, there is a loophole, I can apply for a temporary residency visa that is judged on a case by case basis. Hi neighbor!

I find it odd that the EU bans the trade of seal products but supports bullfighting.

Is it me, or is this a little hypocritical?

I don't care how cute the animal is. If it's neither endangered or sapient, it should be allowed to be hunted, with restrictions only on outright cruelty and on limiting the number killed so they never become endangered.

Is seal clubbing as it is currently done cruel? Maybe they could do something about that.

Does seal clubbing look cruel? Do baby seals look to cute to kill? That's irrelevant.

I am Canadian. One of my (fairly stupid, irresponsible) friends isn't allowed into the States because of a DUI, too. Works both ways, buddy.

/we tried crossing the border on a civic holiday to get beer, but he didn't tell me about his record. So we spent 2 hours in secondary while they searched my van, then sent us back.

Wholehartedly agree with Ehcks, it's irrelevant that they have big cutesy eyes.
I think the only reason it's seen as a problem is a clip from an old documentary where a baby seal is clubbed to death. Afaicr the hunters had killed the mother by a mistake (they didn't kill seals who were nursing young) but the baby seal was hidden to well to see. Rather than leaving it to die from starvation on the ice they killed it and took it to the ship.

PS!
""These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! You see, Reverend Maynard, tomorrow is harvest day and to them it is the holocaust."

Really? Wow. I was thinking the US would give hassle only to people who have a felony. Two classes for crimes here, misdemeanors and felonies (and multiple degrees of each). 1st DUI is typically a misdemeanor. As I understand, a DUI equates to a felony in Canada.

The good news for your friend and I: there is no other country, that I found, that is as strict on entry. Work visas being a different story.
