The article should have mentioned that Boko Haram, is a violent jihadist militant organization based in the northeast of Nigeria. It is an Islamist movement which strongly opposes man-made laws and modern science. Founded by Mohammed Yusuf in 2001, the organisation is a Jihadist group that seeks to establish sharia law in the country.

If you want to know who's worth fighting today, it's those thugs, and their Taliban cousins in Afghanistan.

I don't like the Catholic leadership, but if you honestly think the Roman Catholic Church is on the level of these barbarians, I've got a bridge in New York City that I could sell you.

It's corrupt, it's bureaucratic, it's exploitative, it's far away from what Christ wanted... but I don't see ol' Benny XVI calling for the death of those who challenge the position of the church and putting bounties on the likes of Salman Rushdie.

He can. He doesn't.

I mean, if some guy in Saudi Arabia/Pakistan can get away with calling for the murder of infidels for ~20 years, why not the leader of the Roman Catholic Church? Obviously, it's not something Benedict dwells on.

The only reason why the RCC isn't into violence today is the same reason a merchant in the same business as several others in the same locale doesn't try and cheat his customers too badly- the local competition keeps 'em honest. Also, they've been effectively stripped of most of their secular power by various governments who decided that they really wanted the tax money rather than all of it going to the local archbishop who wanted a new shrine, new mistresses or a new string of young choirboys in velvet outfits.
Now, back when they had a monopoly- do the words "Inquisition" and "Crusades" conjure up any images for you?
