Easy, Bill. Remember Hill's at home with the rolling pin.

2012-09-25 12:45:04 PM
Well, to be fair, it's not like Bill's performance in bed has ever been a reason to make fun of him.

Say what you want about the man, but he can use cigars with class.

"You cannot live in a shame-based world. You won't make it in the 21st century. There's too much diversity. There's too much stuff goin' on the internet You gotta be able to say, if you believe in Islam, that, 'I believe in a god and a prophet strong enough to withstand the criticisms of petty, narrow-minded, mean-spirited people. I believe that the cultural crassness I abhor will, in the end, fall before the values that I exalt.'"

Which is a polite way of saying "Quite being temper tantrum throwing toddlers you fu*king hyper-sensitive assholes."

Which is a sentiment I completely agree with.

We weren't disrespecting Islam by not squelching a film trailer that nobody in authority knew anything about; that 99 percent of us think was crude, and disrespectful, and awful," he said. "We have learned the hard way, over more than 200 years, that in order to preserve freedom, and liberty, including the freedom of religion, you have to allow people to say and do things that you find abhorrent. And you can't react every time you're insulted."

"If you live in a shame-based society where you think nothing good's gonna happen, the temptation is to wait for somebody to say something you'd find offensive and you can lash out against it. But free people absorb destructive things and refuse to be destroyed."

Hear hear. It's alright to criticize a bad tasting film, but don't kill unrelated people over it.

The fact that this needs to be explained to tens of millions of peoples shows how much a waste of time it is trying to explain it to them

this is an outrage.

Bill, you're right, but you're speaking to lunatics. These countries have laws on the books that say insulting Islam is a crime punishable by jail, lashings, or death. They only thing your words are going to accomplish is Middle East protests against Bill Clinton.

HOW DARE HE TELL US WHAT TO DO!

I'm going to go with the Bill Hicks concept of mandatory marijuana consumption to alleviate all this anger.

"Here, smoke this"

Well I must say that my worldview has done a 180 degree turn since Clinton was in office way back when.

I loathed him at the time, but everything I've heard him say lately just makes sense. Weird.

/not outraged any more

There's too much stuff goin' on the internet...

This will be the takeaway quote used to prove that Bill supports internet censorship.

It's like the idea that the most offensive speech it the speech that needs the most protecting is an American ideal only.

And if the film had anything to do with the premeditated murders obama was warned at least 3 days prior to, you and the rapist might have a point.

But since the attack / murder was planned LONG before the film nonsense... you're just full of s#!+.

I half agree with it, and half understand that it comes from a culture in which concepts like "honor," "shame" and "disgrace" are more highly valued and stressed than I'm used to seeing. So I'm trying to be all progressive and multicultural and whatnot. Where I agree with you and Bill is that, even granting that honor is so important in that culture, they have to get over the tribalism and notions of collective responsibility. Here, it's natural to say "well, some other dude did it, but that wasn't me," and that goes hand-in-hand with our notions of free speech. That doesn't hold as much water in the Middle East. So my middle-of-the-road view is that they're fine taking to the streets and going all "This Is An Outrage!", but they're wrong to go all "This Is An Outrage And America Is Collectively Responsible!"

Of course, it would also help calm things down, a lot, if we could simply disseminate some basic facts. Two ideas seem to have taken hold in the Middle East. One is that The Innocence of Muslims is a mainstream American film that we're all watching and enjoying. The other is that there are broad prohibitions in "The West" against holocaust denial, and since we prohibit insults to one religion then it must be discriminatory not to prohibit insults to another religion. These areas are where I wish our leaders would be more outspoken and offer a more robust defense of American free speech.

All extremists are bad.

Rioters, "religious" beheaders, boycotters, dirty non-permit-getting-and-littering protestors, invasive sidewalk blockers, and everyone else who refuses to abide by "Live and Let Live" should be cock-punched.

One actually puts up, the other still wont shut up. The level of violent rhetoric is surprisingly similar. I know otherwise sane seeming people who are using image avatars of dragons or snakes with severed heads to post borderline sedition. I could almost forgive the outright lunacy of barely veiled calls to violence...y'know, as long as someone else is the one to start it, if they even used something more like the severed snake flag. Maybe cut into 3rds for the 3 branches of government, or SOMETHING. But no. They inevitably go straight to dog whistle, as if killing the one magical negro will restore everything to it's rightful place. Sic Semper Tyrannis apparently means 'omg we lost the vote POUTRAGE' nowadays. I want to consider these people fringe lunatics, and in a lot of ways I think they are, but they're....people. People I know. People I can carry on sane conversations about nearly any other subject with.

And, you can't expect 21st century logic and reasoning to resonate with 6th century belief. A strong pimp hand will be the only thing these idiotos ever learn from us. Forget about trying to change their minds.

Saw Bill on the Daily Show recently, and now this. It's beyond rewarding to say to people 'I'm glad Bill Clinton has become the preminent voice of the American speaker nationally and internationally'. People either agree or lose their shiat. Either way I enjoy it.

Bill Clinton: 100 times more awesome than any Republican ever. If the dude could have kept his wank in his pants he'd be regarded as one of the most brilliant American leaders ever. Instead, he gave conservatives the ammo to destroy him that they otherwise lacked.

All extremists are bad.

Extremely vague and subjective, but hmm OK...

boycotters

Wait, what? I can't get down with that. A Klansman who refuses to buy Israeli goods on account of their racism is not the moral equivalent of a Palestinian-American who refuses to buy Israeli goods on account of their feelings towards the Palestinian occupation. The act of boycotting cannot be universally condemned or celebrated.
