According to Wikipedia, their parents try to abandon the kids in woods twice (because kids are little moochers, and aren't entitled to food, shelter, or medical care).

The first time, the kids leave a trail of pebbles and find their way home again. The second time, the kids leave a trail of breadcrumbs and are eaten by a deserving plutocrat who pays taxes.
