Google quickly produced a standalone YouTube app for iOS when they lost Apple's preinstalled app. Google makes many other apps for iOS. There is going to be a Google Maps app.

Google makes a lot more money from Youtube than from Maps. Also Apple will ban any app that they feel replicates a feature built into the OS. I doubt the would block Google Maps but you never know. Google gains more from now having a killer feature on Android that iOS lacks than by creating a maps app for iOS.

I agree there is no upside for Google for producing a stand-alone map app for IOS. But, if they do make one, Apple won't ban it. Map Quest has an IOS app that had the missing feature everyone wanted: vocal turn by turn directions, and it has lived along side the default mapping app with no problems.

Not in the slightest, but the last few threads have been filled with so much rage/butthurt/trolling I don't think there's any good stuff left.

Finally ditched my iPhone for an Android phone and I'm super glad I did. Plus Google's turn by turn navigation app is excellent. I can't imagine paying for turn-by-turn direction service any more.

But when the MapQuest app was released there wasn't a native turn by turn app for the iPhone, now that that's changed it seems less likely they'll allow an app that directly competes with one of their biggest additions their OS.

It would be nice if you could rollback an upgrade. Someone upgraded one of our iPads at work that we use for testing and it sucks there's no way to get it back to 5.

Google aren't going to make an app, because Google want either ad revenue, or user data and if they do an app, it will have to go to the store which either means that the user data will get scrutinised by Apple (and then potentially rejected) or if they go the ad route, they have to share revenue. The browser-based solution is better for Google.

Also, Apple's scrutiny process has a history of inconsistencies. Swimwear shop app? Banned for adult material. Playboy? That's fine.

iOS developers are not required to share ad revenue with Apple. The only cut Apple takes is 30% of the purchase price, and if the app is free but ad-supported Apple gets 30% of nothing.

It's impossible for any of us to know, but I suspect this was all triggered by the massive rate increase required by Google for use of the Maps API. This affected a lot of us developers, having used the APIs for free in the past, and triggered a panic. I wouldn't be surprised if this made a lot of people, including Apple, realize just how tightly Google has the mapping market tied down. We've known for awhile that Apple was likely paying Google for access to its mapping data (the iOS maps app was developed by Apple using Google APIs, not Google itself), and it could very well be that Google simply wanted more money. Or wanted a price they knew Apple wouldn't pay in order to create an advantage for Android.

On the other hand, maybe Apple just wanted to take a key part of their mobile OS out of the hands of their largest competitor, no matter what the cost.

In any event, iOS users are getting screwed until Apple's Maps ramp up to the quality of Google's offerings. Given how long it took Google to get their, it could be a long ride.

I realised I was incorrect about ads. I thought that app creators had to use iAd.

The other question I have is about how Apple are going to improve it. The thing that's always really smart about Google is that they work out ways to get users to populate the data.

For example... my hairdresser recently left the salon she was working in and started her own salon. I told her that she should get her business on Google Maps, so next time someone searches for a hairdresser in the area, they'll find her. So, she goes on the "google business" (or something) page, enter the details and within a week, is on Google Maps. How does she get onto the Apple Maps, if she doesn't own an iPad or iPhone?

I've wondered the same thing. It seems incredibly naive of Apple not to have had this type of functionality ready from the start.

Google has one already, it has not been approved, Apple is sitting on it, like they do with apps that are not in their core functionality, which they feel should be.



Funny since Eric Schmidt has publicly said that Google has NOT submitted anything to Apple and has no plans to do so in the immediate future.
