Why do I get the feeling that Huck Finn is probably gonna get caught in the center of that shiat storm.

But to be fair, Tin Tin is a bit racist. Have to remember the time it was created.

Come on. Like our kids would be disappointed if they pulled "Gasoline Alley" out of the Sunday section? Time for...

Just finished re-reading, I have my own copy. And you probably have the sentiment because it generally does in the states. From what I've seen here in Europe, the book is not taken as racist at all.

Your story is already obsolete, subby.

Twain was one of my first thoughts as well. Never read Tintin but I can't help wondering if this isn't another attempt at a historical whitewash.

Probably rape is a step below legitimate rape, so there is a very high risk of getting pregnant since the body doesn't usually activate its fertilization defense mechanisms.

At what age do kids need to begin to understand the murderous monstrous nature of the naked ape we call humanity? I say wait a while. They'll know the truth soon enough.

if they are in school they are already exposed to other little monkeys being raised by morans saddled with years of their own damage. thats why children are such terrible little people. all behavior is learned behavior.

We read "LIttle Black Sambo" who was East Indian I think (I'm old). That book is known as pretty racist, and I'm sure PETA hates it also. Funny thing, all I remember as a kid was Sambo was clever and beat the tiger. Also, the tiger turned into a pool of butter and they ate it on pancakes. MMMM...pancakes!

So folks who, if they were in the U.S., would likely be justifiably outraged at conservatards that try to ban Harry Potter books because of sorcery or some other stupid crap, are all for banning books because they do not meet modern social and political sensibilities ?

Got it.

When do the burnings begin?

/Yes I saw that this has been rescinded. That does not change my point

The later South American ones are about as damning a criticism of colonial practice as you could wish to find.

Meanwhile, staff at the library is working on investigating the content of other children's books in the department in the aim of giving a consistent image for their readers without stereotypes, genders issues, or homophobia.

Make sure you remove all the Bibles, then!

I remember going to Sambo's Restaurant as a kid in the 70s. Of course by that time they had turned him white.

The Sambos/Denny's in Effingham, Illinois still had him black as of 1976-7. Even after it became a Denny's there was still at least one painting of him strutting through the jungle in his finery.

Very rarely, at our Meeting for Worship, we have well meaning "volunteers" who show up in the Religious Education area and want to purge the children's' books of anything that might be inappropriate. If someone doesn't step in, they will get rid of everything they fear might be disturbing to any child up to and including Dr. Suess" The Sneetches and Everybody Loves Lyle by Barnard Waber. As they typically have plans to donate the books elsewhere, I don't believe they think of it as censorship. And, yes, Rob Seace, for various reasons, I have had to wrestle back certain tomes of Children's' Bible Stories. I think this behavior arises from a very strong urge to protect children from harm that simply needs to be channeled elsewhere. Given the suggestion and an opportunity, these people would probably be outstanding advocates for research and development of new therapies for various debilitating childhood diseases. In other words, they just need to be given more constructive ways to serve their inner-need to protect, nurture, and serve others.

The first 2 were made for newspaper publication, not books. They are more a collection of short storylines. No complexities required, and to be instantly forgotten.

There were flying carpets in Tintin? Last I checked the closest Tintin got to the supernatural was hallucinogenic drugs and a hypnotic fakir.

i'm disappointed by the lack of rape in the article, but i want to advocate for subby's new term 'probably rape'.

terms such as 'rape rape' and 'illegitimate rape' have been very useful in differentiating the many types of activities that get shoved into the category of rape, but more work is needed in this area. 'probably rape' and 'possibly rape' will go a long way towards filling these holes.

God-is-a-Taco: Africans are a bit dumb, while Arabs sit on flying carpets and Turks smoke water pipes

Carpets don't fly.

They do in Aladdin...which is probably going to be banned next.

Everyone knows that Arabs send their time pumping oil out of the ground and complaining bitterly when anyone other than themselves mention someone called "The Prophet", who isn't allowed to be photographed, drawn, painted, or portrayed in any manner despite the fact he was a man, not God. When they aren't complaining bitterly, they are blowing people up, so most folks don't mind the complaining so much.

Contrast this with Africans, who mostly don't have any oil (except for Nigerians, who are essentially Arabs), don't seem to complain too much, but always seem to be in some sort of dire straits due to disease, famine, and something else. Of course there are their American cousins, who don't have any oil either, complain loudly about someone called "The Man", who appears to be white and rich, but at least they don't blow people up--they do however manage to stab, shoot, and do great violence to each other and then blame "The Man" for it.

Then there are the Native Americans, a once proud people who like the American Africans, claims to be oppressed by "The Man". Rather than all stabby with each other however they decided to open something called 'casinos', large, brightly lit structures that take money from "The Man" in large quantities. Similar to Arabs, they appear intent on removing any images of themselves from public view. This confuses people, since they were generally portrayed as noble, brave, and willing to fight for what they believed in.

There are others of course across the wide globe. The Asians who crowd themselves together into tight knit groups and always seem to do everything together. When they aren't making electronics for "The Man", they make other things for something called "Walmart", a power entity that provides everything else "The Man" needs. The Australians, who are like "The Man" but always seem a bit paranoid--perhaps its because there are so many animals there that are poisonous. The Europeans, from whom it is said "The Man" is descended--bitter people mostly who like to brag about how old they are, as though age alone provides some secret wisdom. The Latins who when they aren't making piles of white powder for "The Man" spend a lot of time living like Africans and making more Latins, who sneak across borders at night so they can work for "the Man".

Finally, there is "The Man" himself. Aside from being white and rich, no one seems to know exactly what he looks like, not that he minds having his image captured, but no one seems to get it right. He rarely complains, except when he can't get a cheeseburger with extra fries, and rarely gets violent though he maintains an arsenal that is more than the equal of everyone else combined. Everyone envies "The Man", yet claims they don't want to be him. Everyone agrees though that it is better to be "The Man" than not be "The Man", and the world wouldn't know what to do with itself without him.

Banning colonialism and slavery? Why, so multinationals can colonize and enslave without a populace understanding they've been colonized and enslaved?

Nah. I'm sure it's for the good of the children.
