My SO knew a girl whose job was to discreetly go at the house of weatlhy socialistes, to buy back the very expensive dresses that they only wore once. Apparently, it was a very-well known little secret, but everybody acted like they bought those supremely expensive dresses, wore them once, and then put them in a closet, never to be touched again.

For a fringe of the population, appearance and hypocrisy really is a way of life. I think I'd go mad living in the vicinity.

I agree, and the earrings with the first outfit were nicer too. Though nice is a relative term, and the second outfit was perfectly good. It kind of amazes me that people pay so much attention to what she's wearing. I rather suspect the president reuses suits more than once or twice.

I used to work for an upscale retail chain in the DC area. One HUGE problem they had was the practice of wealthy trophy wives coming in, purchasing a $1500 evening gown from the designer section, wearing it to a formal event, and then returning it the next day. Bonus - Often, the gowns had blood and/or semen stains on them.

Things got so bad that they implemented a special policy against returns. My job was to audit compliance. So my wife (girlfriend at the time) would go in with my audit credit card, purchase a fancy gown in one store, then drive to another the next day and try to return it. A fun little bit of fantasy.

It's easy to see why conservative parents didn't like her. Think about it. They've been brought up on a steady diet of talk radio and TV pundits telling them all the problems in their life are somebody else's fault.

Kids are fat? It couldn't be the parents fault for not encouraging eating right. It must be the fault of the internet or TV commercials for junk cereal and soda.

Kids turned out gay? Liberal Hollywood turned them that way with their anti-family values movies and music.

Kids can't get into college? There was only one spot left, and affirmative action made sure a black kid took it.

Your husband can't get a job? Illegal immigrants stole it.

They didn't have a problem with Nancy's drug education plans or Laura's child literacy plans because the schools were doing the bulk of the work. But Michelle's plan puts personal responsibility on conservative parents' doorsteps, and a lot of them hate that.

Party of personal responsibility, indeed.

Sadly, I would also say a fair bit of it has to do with the color of her skin. Pathetic in this day and age, I know, but it certainly seems to be the case.

As someone whose mother was a Librarian her entire life, I never had a problem with Laura Bush, even though I vehemently disagreed with her clod of a husband.

Yep, the "a dress can never be worn twice" crowd, given half a chance, will drive a Mom & Pop gown boutique right out of business.

That said, I think the headline was a cheap shot at Ann Romney. She isn't mentioned in the article. I get that the submitter was attempting humor, but it doesn't work in this case. Unfortunately, the headline was not funny and just comes off as unfair.

Also, I agree with other posters that Michelle looks fabulous. I really don't prefer one belt over the other. I think she looks great in both. Despite her beauty, I think it is nice that Michelles' intelligence is even more impressive than her fashion statements.

Troll thread. I'm feeding this one.

The problem isn't that Bird Shirt wears expensive clothes. It's that the expensive clothes remind us that she repeatedly makes comments that show she has contempt for people who aren't as rich as she is. Michelle, OTOH, is like Mrs. Ballou, who has some nice clothes and wears them proudly on appropriate occasions.

Michelle would blend right in at a Methodist ladies sewing circle and pot luck dinner, while Ann would probably make some snide remark about springing for the big bucks for the paper plates and have her driver take her home to have her chef make her a proper meal.

Michelle would blend right in at a Methodist ladies sewing circle and pot luck dinner, while Ann would probably make some snide remark about springing for the big bucks for the paper plates and have her driver take her home to have her chef make her a proper meal.

Oh, is that the narrative of the day? Cool, I was just wondering.

Yes, we're going with reality today instead of Talking Pointstm.

stoli n coke: It's easy to see why conservative parents didn't like her.

Can't argue with any of that...

Conservatives in this country love to play the victim... Which is hilarious in light of Romney's asinine statements about half the country.

And judging by the hubris and hyperbole of the Republican nominees, it's unlikely they'll learn anything should they get shellacked in November.

Well that's one theory.

The other theory is that she likes the dress and wanted to wear it again.

So.... applying Occam's razor which sounds more likely;

A) The woman liked the dress and sees no problem wearing it again

B) There is a secret libruhl plot to create an issue so subtle as to be pretty much imperceptible to everyone but the wingnuts

2012-09-25 09:59:18 AM

Close2TheEdge: I used to work for an upscale retail chain in the DC area.

//No, her's did not have blood and semen stains on them.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take them to realize that providing free rental of dresses to customers wasn't a profit making venture? Or were they hoping to use the dress give aways as loss leaders?

Perhaps some of these boutiques should consider renting their dresses as well as selling them. That being said, I'm quite happy I don't have 'evening gown needs'. Bleh.

Why are blatantly false headline articles allowed to be greenlighted on Fark? They don't serve anyone justice.

Admins green/red headlines, not mods (I've had similar questions and was promptly corrected)

and what exactly is false aside from the punchline? Can we not make non-sequitor punchlines anymore? That seems like it would destroy the traffic to this site

Well, some of them are funny, true enough. The problem is, they're not always obviously a joke, and you get 300 reply threads on occasion of people arguing over a point that isn't true, with like three people repeatedly saying "Um, that really isn't in the article." Then, even after it's been said it's not true, new people keep coming in and arguing it over and over.

It's just trollish and dishonest. It's fine when it's an obvious joke.

Honest discourse? Strawmen? Yeah, fine.

dude, that's kinda the point of threads.

We go off on something that may not have any sort of connection to the original point of the thread. Look at this one, starting from the beginning, you can see our evolution from talking about the dress to her wearing it twice to defending Ann, to talking about stepford wives and other first lady types, to talking about Michelle's beauty, to now talking about the validity of trollish headlines on fark and what their purpose is.

half the fun of fark is the headlines, the other half is the threads.

In a campaign where one of the issues is wasteful spending, it's not a good idea for anyone to call out someone for wearing an outfit more than once. Kind of adds to the whole "out of touch" thing.

Liberal media pointed it out and then all you Dems jump on the Ann Romney wouldn't be seen dead wearing a gown twice bandwagon. Trying to blame Republicans for a Liberal tactic is such a.......Liberal tactic.

Are you not able to follow a thread?
Ann Romney (wife of Mitt Romney, presidential candidate for 2012) is being accused of being so rich that she would never wear an expensive gown twice, therefore (am I going too fast for you?) attempting to advance a class war between Dems and Replublicans because Dems are so middle class and Republicans like Mitt are so disgustingly rich that voting Americans can not in good conscience vote for such an out of touch person.

"She would be a better role model of healthy eating if she lost 20-25 pounds."

"I think most of her taste is in her mouth. Someone got hold of her and told her to stop dressing like some Detroit Hoochie Mama for one thing.... [...] Are you so blind and wanting a black to stay in the White House that you really think she's so wonderful and let him destroy our country ? You should hear the stories the secret service tell. But realistically there is nothing that can be called an obvious joke on the internet, especially in the current political climate - let's just point out Romney seriously talked about having windows that open on planes recently. How can you make an obvious joke in a headline when reality is more stupid that what anyone (sane) would accept was near enough reality to be considered a joke?

We need a two-pronged strategy in order to achieve journalistic resource independence. One: open up federally protected journalism reserves. The two-billed hornswallow is just going to have to deal with the journalism derricks. Two: relax EPA standards for the media. The amount of bullshiat that a journalist needs to emit into the atmosphere is huge, and Obama's job-killing regulations of 2ppm of bullshiat per journalist is way too low.

Wow. It isn't often where I read a post that touches on several different things, and I agree with all of them.

Satanic_Hamster: Close2TheEdge: I used to work for an upscale retail chain in the DC area.

//No, her's did not have blood and semen stains on them.

Out of curiosity, how long did it take them to realize that providing free rental of dresses to customers wasn't a profit making venture? Or were they hoping to use the dress give aways as loss leaders?

Much longer than it should have. See, the local store managers didn't have a big problem with this as many of them ran in the same circles as the offenders. The bean-counters at the corporate offices, not so much. Once they clued into how bad the problem was, there ensued a long ground war to try and minimize the problem. The chain had a very "customer is always right" history and generally was pretty lenient when it came to returns. Even when the policy was implemented, the audits were necessary to make sure that the floor staff and managers actually enforced it. That was my job,

From Wiki: She is of Bajan,[10] African American, and Mexican descent,[3][11] with "clear green" eyes.

I am 4 years older than her. I have never been that HOT! I've always been the cute type. I am OK with being cute. I love her being hot. Does that make me strange?

quatchi: I liked the other belt.

/Of course my socks don't even match at the moment so you should prolly take any fashion advice/statements from me with a largish grain of salt.

You mean the one she wore the first time with the gown? Me too.

And my idea of fashion is a pair of cotton slacks & a T-shirt. :-D

karnal: You're naive if you don't think it was a calculated step....have Michelle wear the same gown - get a couple of "liberal friendly" newscasters to comment on it....then make flippant remarks how the super mega-rich Ann Romney would not be caught dead wearing the same gown twice. Thus, advancing their class warfare agenda.

Jackie Kennedy is regarded by most of the people who care about such things as the most innately fashionable First Lady we've had. She bought the best, but the designs were simple, so she was able to wear many things more than once... suits, gowns, jewelry, hats.

I'm glad to see Michelle Obama move in that direction. A simple black gown is basic enough that she can wear it again with different accessories (though Michelle's one shoulder Michael Kors is distinctive enough that people will notice). She rocks the gown, why shouldn't she wear it as often as she can?

Now, as for Ann Romney, who cares? She can afford to wear a new outfit every hour of every day, and as long as it's her money I don't see how it's my business what she wears, and I don't see how it reflects on her husband's campaign.

Michelle's clothes are made from the tears of America's lost hopes and dreams.

Heh. Whenever anyone makes the claim "the customer is always right," first slap them, then remind them that the company who started that went out of business, then slap them again.

I have a sales managers or two who have that attitude. And it's just a WONDER that those accounts are losing us money.

I think Michelle is very attractive. She has an interesting face. That picture of her posted above in pink with pearls is about the worst I've ever seen her. Usually she reminds me of an exotic young Mary Tyler Moore. She just radiates energy, too.

topcon: I mean, we get it. You like Obama the president. I don't dislike Obama either. But stop pretending his wife is anything resembling hot, she isn't. She has an oddly shaped face and eyes, big teeth, a bigger ass than her body should have, etcetera.

Her knees are quite sharp, too.
