I only recently started watching the Today show, right around the end of the Ann Curry era. I liked her ok but she admittedly had a poor personality for daytime TV.

But Matt Lauer? I have learned to despise him with the passion of 1000 suns. Yesterday he was interviewing the great Carol Burnett and started asking her all concerned-like, "But how do you feel about today's comics with their swear words and blue humor? I personally feel uncomfortable about this." She looked at him like he was crazy for a minute.

And I just turned it off. She probably got that question 40 years ago, Matt, thanks for checking in with today's hot topics.

Ann Curry is one of those people who's so serious about what she does that she makes you think she's not enjoying it. It wasn't until we saw it being taken away from her that we got to see that she really did have feelings about what she was doing. Sort of like Bob Dole, before and after the 1996 presidential election.

GMA is the better show. Today just makes me uncomfortable.

Did he really say that?

Dude has never seen any outtakes from her old show.

/Those were some funny foul-mouthed people.

This is what you get.

I stopped watching Today in favor of GMA a few years ago.

Today is going to have a rough time with sweeps week if it just happens to coincide with Robin Roberts return.

I really like RR.

My wife started putting it on in the mornings a few months ago, so I have a question for those of you who have been watching longer. How long has Today been such a shill for the Republican party? Is it an election season thing, or have they always been Fox News Lite?

Also, what's their obsession with the British royal family about? I've never seen adults fawn so embarrassingly. Is it just them, or do their audience care?

2012-09-25 07:51:04 AM
Ann Curry was in over her head with the hosting job.

2012-09-25 08:07:42 AM
Ann was the best part of the Today show. Lauer's a dick.

Now that we're done with that, can we talk about how smoking hot Amy Robach is?

He really did, and I really turned it off. I have never wanted Ryan Seacrest to steal anyone else's job before, but please, Ryan, I'm sure you're free for a few hours in the AM.

Ann Curry and Jennifer Tilly are the HOTTEST celebs over 50 yrs. old.

/I'd be the meat in that sandwich

When I was 5 or 6 years old, I used to get up with my grandpa to watch the Today Show because he'd let me cuss at Barbara Walters with him.

2012-09-25 08:22:42 AM
Yeah, after the Ann fiasco, I just quit paying attention. Savanna in place of Ann Curry? Really? Really?

/and don't get me started on that stupid Bush daughter
//we have better just starting out reporters in the very small market stations around here

2012-09-25 08:24:10 AM
Whether Ann Curry's personality comes across or not is a matter of opinion; I happen to have really liked her. However, the one thing you could accuse her of was having way too much class for that bunch of idiots.

2012-09-25 08:40:51 AM
I was hoping for some sexy Anne Curry pics. Disappointed.

She's weird looking. I was staring at her face yesterday and staring at it and thinking this is a weird face. I smoke a lot of weed in the AM but still, frickin' weird face. Big

They both suck, unfortunately. While one is talking about weddings the other is talking about YouTube videos. They've devolved into little more than a combination of Entertainment Tonight and Buzzfeed.

CBS News This Morning is the only morning news show made for adults, but Oprah hanger-on Gayle King makes it unwatchable.

This morning I was getting ready for work and "CBS This Morning" was on. Charlie Rose was the freaking host and it appeared for all intents and purposes to be a...you know...a news show. I think that's the one I would like if I had to pick one.

2012-09-25 09:51:47 AM
Matt Lauer can suck it

2012-09-25 10:08:40 AM
My favorite part is where they ask the family in a remote studio whose house was destroyed by a tornado how it made them feel. After a 3 second pause:

"Pretty bad."

Then another question and another long pause:

"Yes."

Then they wish the family well. 3 seconds later:

"Um, thank you."

That's some great tv.

They should bring on those drunk Ewoks as co-hosts.

Robin will not return for several months at least and could be off for up to a year according to the doctor that performed her marrow transplant.

Three words for Matt Lauer.

Live. Prostate. Exam.

If you can catch them right at 7AM (EST), they run a montage of clips all the current news events. Ususally very well done and segs into Charlie Rose. He does report the news well, but no amount of makeup can help him look like anything other than a corpse.
Which is why I switch quickly over to CNN Headline News for the Robin Meade eye bleach. The inside joke of having a pron star-looking woman report the news never gets old. It's the warm personality.

This just goes to show bias is in the eye of the beholder. I usually have to turn off Today because of the pro-Democrat slant.

I don't watch the Today Show and never have, so I can't answer your question about bias. However, I know two Republicans who refuse to watch GMA (my preferred morning show) simply because George Stephanopoulos is on it.

I've watched GMA since I was a kid, back when Joan Lunden and David Hartman were on it. I know Today was popular when Katie Couric was on it, but I was never a fan of hers. And I despise Matt Lauer; he seems so freaking smug.

Within 5 years or so, NBC will be done as a broadcast network. If there was a God, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, and Community would be picked up on cable, probably TBS or Comedy Central.

2012-09-25 11:54:31 AM
I've never liked Daytime T.V. I've always thought of it as crap for housewives......

I've seen it a couple of times and it's almost always a news segment that they bring in someone else to report on or it's a light hearted interview with some celebrity.

2012-09-25 12:00:10 PM
DOn't get me started. The missis loves Today, and I can't stand it. Case in point, the whole Kardashian-9/11 kerfluffle from earlier this month. I changed the channel to not see her, and there is the pres and first lady commemorating 9/11. GMA and even Fox were playing it also. I switched back and there's the Kardash matriarch being interviewed.
Also, 'Today's Professionals'. First of all what is Star Jones a professional of? and they have had Kelly Osbourne sit in with them. I have to put on CBS, and Gail King is a minimal distraction at worst (she's a bit of a fangirl sometimes), except when she interviewed Stevie Nicks, that was a trainwreck.

Hoda and Kathie Lee are already on in the third hour.

I'm i the squealie camp. I quit watching when they so abruptly kicked Ann out of the door. Even when Katie left, she was given a full week of send-offs; Meredith, too. I watched them every single morning for probably over 20 years. No more. They blew it. I'm trying to find my new morning fix, but it's like driving someone else's car and I haven't found my groove yet.
I miss you Ann!!!!

She's a former prosecutor.

Who the hell watches morning "news" shows, anyway? If I'm awake that early it's probably because I have shiat to do, shiat other than watching TV. Even if you work third shift or something Netflix is infinitely better than this garbage. I guess I'll just have to add this to the list of things I will never understand.

What goes around, comes around. Ann Curry was one of my favorite things about "Today"; I liked her better than Meredith. I'd been watching for maybe 15 years or so, but stopped when they dropped Ann. Such a shiatty thing to do. I now channel hop while getting ready in the AM; either the local news that runs until 9, CBS Morning Show, CNN with Soledad O'Brien (I liked her on Weekend Today), or MSNBC for some "Morning Joe". I've tried to watch GMA, but it just seems like chaos most of the time.

Now, I DO still watch Today on the weekends; I love Lester Holt. He's the hardest working man in news, I swear.

Oh, I don't know. I hear it's pretty rare to get a Kardashian on television to talk about herself. If you're scheduling that show, you get the Kardashian on there, regardless of the history of that day. Bonus because it was the woman who sold her own daughter's sex tape.

I don't even know how people can get up in the morning and watch that drivel. If it ain't Mike and Mike, the TV isn't on in the AM.

2012-09-25 06:44:40 PM
BBC World News is the best morning news show. And that is all I have to say about that.

2012-09-25 06:47:59 PM
Am I the only one around here who watches "Morning Joe"? Joe Scarborough can be a bit of a douche, but they actually focus on...issues, not Youtube videos and celebrity "news". Also, Mika is a MILF, and Willie Geist and Mike Barnicle are good comic relief.

I really don't understand how people can watch the network morning shows. They're so damn vapid. At least CBS has Charlie Rose, that's something I guess.

McManus_brothers: I really don't understand how people can watch the network morning shows

The thing I find most annoying is that in their effort to come across as perky and wide awake, they keep interrupting each other when they talk. When they have on a guest, they ask him a question, and before he can get three words out, they interrupt him and start talking over him. This is happening a lot on other shows, too, but the morning shows really seem to take it up a notch.

Came to say this, but will add the following:

Watch during the first hour where Gayle is not around so much. Charlie Rose is the best interviewer around, and John Miller knows national security like it's nobody's business. I watch it every morninign as I am getting the kids and wife out the door. I will occasionally swithc over to ABC to see if Stephanopolis (sp?) is talking politics, since he is the best when it comes to that.

I'd rather have any of these broadcasters vs Matt Lauer...

I miss Hughes Rudd on CBS ... He was gravel-voiced and wrinkled and didn't seem like he was having a good time.
In other words, a perfect mirror of most people when they first wake up in the morning.

2012-09-26 03:26:22 AM
I think these morning "news" shows are for people who don't really want to have a relationship with world at large. Take Matt Lauer, does his impossibly smug demeanor not signal to his viewers that it is okay to have a certain disdain for what is happening? Or at least a measure of intellectual distance from facts. Otherwise someone might stop sipping their coffee and then that lightning bolt strikes and they realize that right there Matt Lauer and his ilk are sucking the very life force right out of them.
