MySpace's new owners, which includes actor/recording star Justin Timberlake, are teasing the coming of a revamped service.

So I guess he really is done helping Mark Zuckerberg screw over the Vostwinkle twins or whatever their name is.

Meh, I'm OK with this. Facebook has quite a few negatives to it these days, but it's too useful as a contact point to toss.

fusillade762: So what does that make Friendster?

Friendster is like the first fish that attempted to walk on land because it had feet but hadn't developed a mechanism for breathing air. MySpace is the fish that had feet and could breathe air, but couldn't eat food out of the water. Facebook is the fish that had feet, could breathe air, and convinced the Friendster and and MySpace fish they could survive out of the water so it had something to eat.

Facebook is the new AOL. I remember when my aunt and uncle would stay on AOL becuase their children/grandchildren were all on it and they could IM other AOL users not realizing you could download IM utilities that worked no matter what ISP a person had. They overpaid on internet access for YEARS.

Facebook is like that. People are more or less on it becuase everyone they know is on it but eventually there will be something that will be just as good that doesn't require you to be ON facebook and it'll eventually die out.

Myspace will stay true to it's roots. So we can look forward to starry backgrounds, with black text, emo humblebrag writing, two autoplay videos, a few ads and an autoplay of their favorite music in the background.

Yeah, no, cut those roots and in fact, prune the whole tree.

New Facebook? Looks like they're going to concentrate on their core strengths (promoting bands, videos etc.), instead of going for the "party pics & farmville & chain letters from your parents" angle.

This. Facebook has basically become my rolodex. I almost never use it, but it is a quick and convenient way to get in touch with people for whom I don't have other direct means of contact (phone/email etc).

And that's where I stopped reading that...

smadge1: I don't know why people complain about twitter, it's just text messaging, with a few nifty tools for talking to other people.

Text messages are between you and the person on the other end, or at the most, your entire contact list. Twitter is a message format that you feel is so important that the entire internet needs to have access to it. But here's the thing; it's not and neither are you. It's just another way for a self-absorbed society to show just how self-absorbed it has become.

Maybe the reason you don't have their phone or email is because they don't want you contacting them...

Although I don't use MySpace for social networking, I do still use it to listen to music. It's easier to use than Youtube and has less ads.

I hope it makes a comeback as a social network. I liked the blog feature, which facebook doesn't have.

I used facebook to organize two weeks worth of comedy shows and a Reunion with at least two dozen people. Much easier than email or some forum type solution.

StrangeQ: Twitter is a message format that you feel is so important that the entire internet needs to have access to it.

This notion that is so prevalent on Fark is absurd. There are morons like Kardashians that abuse Twitter, but it's not the standard. They're just the loudest voices. And the thing about Twitter is that it has the flexibility to give the user great power over whom is within their conversations.

The real culprits in the whole "Twitter is for attention whores" argument are the online gossip rags that continually make stupid celebrities' attention-whoring tweets such a big deal.

Could you please illustrate a situation where Twitter could serve a real function besides attention whoring? I'm serious; I'm really just not familiar with the thing.

a flock of birds: Could you please illustrate a situation where Twitter could serve a real function besides attention whoring? I'm serious; I'm really just not familiar with the thing.

All in how you set it up I guess. You can just have it serve as an RSS feed if you want. I get local news. IndyCar news. I get pitching matchups and stats from Baseball Reference. In addition to that, I also have it set up to communicate with the (sparing number of) friends I know on there. There are some real-world contacts and some I've only met virtually.

From experience the biggest issue people have with Twitter appears to be how they set up their profile. For the people close to you, or those that you feel you would like notice of tweets, you can have their tweets forwarded directly to your phone as texts. But you don't have to. And the thing about Twitter is it's not a mutual social networking site, meaning just because you follow someone doesn't mean they will follow you, but if you do follow each other, it allows you to DM, which is basically private messaging.

I don't know, I'm a Twitter advocate of sorts. I met my girlfriend there. Granted it was by complete accident, but it is what it is.

People keep saying that, but it already happened and people stayed on Facebook. If what you were saying was true, everyone would have switched to Google+.

I won't say that Facebook is here forever, but right now I'd put it's long term prospects into the same category as Amazon and EBay. Yeah, there's no permanent on the internet, but there are no signs of demise other than the hopeful wishes of people who just don't like it.

I don't use Twitter all that much, but it's just another communication tool in the modern arsenal. I don't follow attention whores and I post mostly updates to my art stuff. People who freak out over it are getting themselves worked up over nothing. But, hey, if that's what gets their rocks off, so be it.
